Bank of America Stadium transitioning to artificial turf before Carolina Panthers' 2021 season

Bank of America Stadium will transition from natural grass to artificial turf in time for the Carolina Panthers preseason schedule in August, leaving the NFL's 32 teams with 16 grass venues. The decision to switch to FieldTurf was made to guarantee a consistent surface for not only the Panthers but also other events. Those events include the Charlotte Football Club of Major League Soccer, which will begin playing at BOA in 2022, college football games and concerts. There could be up to 30 professional sports events alone played at the stadium every year.Tepper Sports & Entertainment vice president and chief operating officer Mark Hart said it would be a "heavy lift'' to have continued with natural grass, which the stadium has used since the Panthers played their first game there in 1996.

Carolina Panthers trade QB Teddy Bridgewater to Denver Broncos

The Carolina Panthers have traded quarterback Teddy Bridgewater to the Denver Broncos for a sixth-round pick in the 2021 NFL draft, it was announced Wednesday. The Panthers will pay $7 million to Bridgewater; the Broncos will pay him $3 million, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter. "Acquiring Teddy Bridgewater adds competition, experience and a strong veteran presence to our quarterback room," Broncos general manager George Paton said in a statement. "He's a talented player and leader who's had success in this league in a number of different situations." The trade will not take the Broncos, who have the No. 9 overall pick, out of the market for a quarterback in Thursday's draft, a source told ESPN. Bridgewater, who signed a three-year, $63 million deal with the Panthers before last season, threw for 3,733 yards in 2020, with 15 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. By renegotiating the final two years of Bridgewater's deal, the Panthers will save $6 million in 2021 and $26 million in 2022, a source told ESPN's David Newton.

Aaron Rodgers doesn't want to return to Green Bay Packers, sources say
An NFL player has never been traded after winning the MVP award in the previous season. The only MVPs to not return to their team in the season after winning the award were Norm Van Brocklin (retired after winning in 1960) and Jim Brown (retired after winning in 1965).

Green Bay Packers committed to Aaron Rodgers for '2021 and beyond,' team president says

The foreseeable future could now be defined as 2021 and beyond after Packers president Mark Murphy said the team is committed to quarterback Aaron Rodgers for more than just next season. None of that may matter if Rodgers follows through on what he has told some in and out of the organization, that he will not return to the Packers, as ESON's Adam Schefter reported Thursday. Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst previously had said Rodgers would be the team's quarterback for the "foreseeable future." Coach Matt LaFleur has not addressed reporters since March but is expected to do so at the conclusion of the NFL draft on Saturday. Rodgers is under contract with the Packers through the 2023 season with a base salary of $14.7 million in 2021. He had a $6.8 million roster bonus due in March that was "vested as scheduled," a source said at the time. Rodgers would need to attend a large portion of the offseason program to earn a $500,000 workout bonus, and sources said that so far he has not participated in the early portion, which has been virtual.

Dallas Cowboys declining fifth-year option on LB Leighton Vander Esch, agent says
Vander Esch's best season came as a rookie, when he was named to the Pro Bowl after the Cowboys selected him No. 19 overall. He had a franchise-rookie-record 176 tackles in 2018. Vander Esch's injury history is the biggest reason.

Dallas Cowboys' draft (mostly) all about a defense that needed change
After allowing a franchise-record 473 points and 6,183 yards in Nolan's one year as coordinator, the Cowboys knew they had to make a drastic change in 2021 on defense. It started in January with the hiring of Dan Quinn as coordinator and culminated over the 2021 NFL draft with a first in team history.

Detroit Lions sign 'Lance Chance U' RB Rakeem Boyd as undrafted free agent
Boyd fits the mold of tough-nosed players who the new regime added during this past week's NFL draft. In 2018 and 2019, he led Arkansas in rushing before opting out of the end of the 2020 regular season to focus on the NFL. As a junior, he rushed for 1,133 yards with eight touchdowns in 12 games.

Washington Football Team agrees with record-tying RB Jaret Patterson
Patterson, an undrafted free agent, rushed for an NCAA-record-tying eight touchdowns and 409 yards during Buffalo's 70-41 win over Kent State last season. In six games last fall, he rushed for 1,072 yards and 19 touchdowns.

Cleveland Browns sign Malik McDowell, ex-Seattle Seahawks 2nd-round pick yet to play in NFL
McDowell was an All-Big Ten performer for the Spartans. The 2017 second-round pick out of Michigan State was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks but never played for the team after suffering a head injury in an ATV accident and was ultimately released.

New England Patriots decline RB Sony Michel's fifth-year option, pick up Isaiah Wynn's, sources say
Michel has rushed for 2,292 yards and 14 touchdowns in three seasons with the Patriots. He also has 26 receptions for 258 yards and a touchdown.

Wynn missed his rookie season in 2018 after tearing his Achilles in the preseason. Injuries have limited him to a combined 18 games (all starts) at left tackle the past two seasons.

Dallas Cowboys cutting Antwaun Woods after selecting two DTs in 2021 NFL draft, source says

The remaking of the Dallas Cowboys' defense continues with the release of nose tackle Antwaun Woods, who started 32 games from 2018-20, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter. At 6-foot-1, 310 pounds, Woods was more of a fit in how the Cowboys wanted their defensive tackles in Rod Marinelli's scheme. The Cowboys selected Kentucky's Quinton Bohanna, who is 6-4, 327 pounds, in the sixth round. In the fourth round, the Cowboys drafted defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa, but he is projected as an interior pass rusher. The Cowboys also waived cornerback Saivion Smith, who spent time on the active roster and practice squad last season. With the additions of corners Kelvin Joseph (second round) and Nahshon Wright, Smith became expendable. The Cowboys have to release four more players to reach the 90-man limit after adding their 11 draft picks and 13 undrafted free agents.

CB Casey Hayward Jr. signs with Las Vegas Raiders, rejoins DC Gus Bradley

The Las Vegas Raiders added a veteran presence to their youthful secondary by signing cornerback Casey Hayward Jr. on Tuesday. Hayward, 31, appeared in 14 games last season, making 13 starts. He finished with an interception and eight passes defended. He was inactive for the Nov. 29 game at Buffalo, snapping a streak of 107 consecutive games played. Hayward dealt with back, groin and hamstring injuries in 2020, and while he led the NFL with 42 pass breakups over the 2016 and 2017 seasons, he allowed 8.6 yards per target in 2020, the worst mark of his career. He has 23 career interceptions, though only three in his past three seasons combined.
