The lottery will be held at NHL Network's studio in Secaucus, New Jersey.

Quinn Hughes, Roman Josi, Cale Makar finalists for Norris Trophy

Quinn Hughes, Roman Losi and Cale Maker are finalists for this year's Norris Trophy, the NHL announced Wednesday. The Norris is awarded annually to the "defense player who demonstrates throughout the season the greatest all-round ability in the position."

This is the first Norris Trophy nomination for Hughes, who paced all NHL defensemen this season in assists (75) and points (92) along with 17 goals in 82 games while averaging 24:41 TOI. The Vancouvdf Canucks captain guided his team back to the postseason as one of the Western Conference's top clubs, ranking sixth in offense (3.40 goals per game) and allowing the sixth-fewest goals against (2.70). Hughes, 24, also ranked second among league defensemen in power-play points (38) for the Canucks' 11th-ranked unit.

Josi, 33, previously won the Norris following his 2018-19 campaign, marking the first time a Swiss-born skater had taken the trophy. This season started off slowly for the Nashville Predators captain, but Josi found his form and executed at a customarily elite level down the stretch. He led NHL all blueliners in goals (23) and was third in points (85) this season while averaging 24:38 TOI.

Colorado Avalanche blueliner Makar, 25, won his first Norris following the 2021-22 season, when Colorado also won the Stanley Cup. Makar was a standout on the blue line again this season with 21 goals and 90 points in just 77 games, both second among league defensemen. Although Makar missed time battling injuries, he managed to produce consistently when available to lift Colorado through some difficult patches of its season. Makar still averaged 24:46 TOI for Colorado and was a spark on their fifth-ranked power play, pacing all blueliners with 38 points on the man advantage.

San Jose Sharks win NHL draft lottery, right to choose No. 1

Macklin Celebrini watched NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly slowly flip the placard to reveal that the San Jose Sharks had secured the first overall pick in the 2024 NHL draft lottery on Tuesday night. The Sharks finished last in the overall standings (19-54-9) and retained their position in the lottery. San Jose had an 18.5% chance to win the lottery and a 25.5% chance to pick first. The NHL draft was held at the NHL Network studios. There were 19 people in a small, windowless room, including three media observers. A video screen displayed each team's odds for the first overall pick. In front of the screen was a lottery machine attached to a hand-held control operated by Will Markham, a machine technician. The drawing for the second overall pick was 2-8-4-11. The winner was the Sharks, meaning it had to be redrawn. The redraw was 14-11-3-9. Again, the winner was the Sharks.

2024 NHL mock draft: Post-lottery projections for picks 1-32

The 2024 draft lottery is in the rearview mirror, and for the first time, it was a chalk lottery. The teams that were supposed to get the top two picks -- the San Jose Sharks and the Chicago Blackhawks received the top two picks. Apart from some playoff seeding that could rearrange the draft order a little bit at the bottom, we know who is picking where. While my first mock draft required a bit of projecting for the draft order, now the mock drafts get a little more real as picks are locked in. The first round of the 2024 NHL draft will be held in Las Vegas at the Sphere on Friday, June 28 (7 p.m. ET, ESPN/ESPN+). Rounds 2-7 will be on Saturday, June 29 (11:30 a.m. ET, ESPN+).

Hurricanes re-sign coach Rod Brind'Amour, staff to new deals

The Carolina Hurricanes re-signed coach Rod Brind'Amour and his staff to multiyear contracts, keeping one of the best in the NHL behind the bench around for the long term. The team announced the re-signings Sunday for Brind'Amour, assistants Jeff Daniels and Tim Gleason, goaltending coach Paul Schonfelder and video coach Chris Huffine. Brind'Amour was in the final year of a deal reached in 2021, when he was the winner of the Jack Adams Award as the league's top coach. His status had become a talking point around the NHL as jobs changed hands, though Brind'Amour -- as well as Waddell -- had expressed confidence that a deal would get done.

Brind'Amour took over in 2018 to lead a franchise that had missed the playoffs for nine straight years. The Hurricanes have gone to the playoffs six times in as many seasons under the captain of Carolina's 2006 Stanley Cup winner. Carolina has also won at least one series in each of the past six postseasons, marking the first time a team has accomplished that since the Detroit Red Wings did it from 1995 to 2000. The Canes also reached the Eastern Conference finals twice in the past six seasons. The Hurricanes beat the New York Islanders in five games in Round 1 then lost to the Rangers in a six-game second-round series after falling in a 3-0 hole.

Conn Smythe Watch: Who leads for Stanley Cup playoffs MVP?

The Conn Smythe Trophy is unique in that a player's entire postseason performance is factored into who wins the Stanley Cup playoffs' most valuable player. The first two rounds narrow the field and start defining narratives. The next two rounds are where legacies are made. We asked close to two dozen potential voters and hockey media that have covered the playoffs for their top three players for postseason MVP. Those ballots were compiled to create this ranking. We attempted to have an equal number of Eastern and Western Conference media in the survey. Here's a look at where the Conn Smythe race stands as the conference finals begin.

Canucks' Rick Tocchet wins Jack Adams Award as coach of the year

Rick Tocchet was honored as the NHL's coach of the year Wednesday after guiding the Pacific Division champion Vancouver Canucks to their second playoff berth in nine years. Tocchet appeared on 109 of 114 ballots for the Jack Adams Award submitted by members of the NHL Broadcasters' Association and received 82 first-place votes, the NHL announced. He became the third Canucks coach to win the honor, following Pat Quinn in 1992 and Alain Vigneault in 2007.

The 60-year-old Tocchet oversaw a significant turnaround in a Canucks team that finished with a 50-23-9 record -- the third-most wins in franchise history -- and jumped from finishing 22nd in the overall standings last year to sixth. Vancouver led the NHL with a first-period goal differential of plus-38 and also finished the season going 42-1-4 when leading after two periods, a year after going 21-1-4.
