In their game in Tempe, Cousins delivered a hit to Coyotes defenseman Juuso Valimaki, while Valimaki was on one knee against the sideboard. Zucker saw the play, skated over and delivered a check to the back of Cousins, driving his head against the glass.

nhl rookie rankings: with bedard, injurry, a tie at no. 1
Figuring out who will win this year's Calder Trophy has turned into something of a complex discussion -- all because of what happened on Jan. 5. That's the day Chicago Blackhawks star center Connor Bedfard fractured his jaw.

**************
Bedfard led this year's rookie class in several offensive categories, was doing the same thing with his team, all while playing as a top-line center -- which led to him being the only rookie named to the NHL All-Star Game in Toronto.

nhl power rankings: 1-32 poll, best position for each team
We're another week closer to All-Star Weekend -- the spiritual, if not mathematical midway point of the season -- but our voters caused no change atop the Power Rankings, with the Winnipeg Jets holding down the No. 1 slot again. Of course, there were plenty of changes elsewhere.

NHL Power Rankings: 1-32 poll, each team's questionable move

While the Edmonton Oilers approach history with a record-breaking win streak, it's another Western Canadian team that takes over the top spot of the NHL Power Rankings this week. Plus, while we identified each team's best new addition in last week's Rankings, this week it's the opposite side of the coin: What are the moves (or non-moves) on which each team might like a do-over?

Top 5

# 1| Vancouver
Vancouver has hit all the right notes this season. The Canucks' only regret might wind up being not extending Elias Petterssson before now (if it was an option). He's on pace for another 100-plus-point campaign and will be (rightfully) looking for a significant payday when the time comes to negotiate. Vancouver will have to come prepared -- and maybe back up the Brinks truck.

# 2 | Boston
Perhaps this would be considered a "good problem to have." Boston has red-hot netminder (and pending RFA) jeremy Swayman up for another contract negotiation this summer -- and the way he's playing, Swayman's going to demand even more than he did a year ago. The Bruins might regret not getting something longer-term done with Swayman when they had the chance, prior to his levelling up again in 2023-24.

# 3 | Winnipeg
The Jets are excellent in so many areas that it's easy to gloss over the fact their power play is in the bottom 10 of the league. Yikes. The Jets haven't remedied that situation for over half the season, and it's the type of problem that comes back to bite a contender in the playoffs. Winnipeg might regret letting its not-so-little problem linger (although perhaps a remedy could be on the way ahead of the trade deadline).

#4 | Colorado
Colorado took a risk replacing injured goaltender Pavel Francouz with waiver-wire pickup Ivan Prosvetov last October -- and it hasn't paid off. Prosvetov has provided little help to starter Alexander Geotgiev in a backup role, and as Colorado leans heavily on Georgiev now, the more likely he'll be burned out by spring. The Avalanche might regret not bolstering their goalie tandem sooner.

#5 | Dallas
Dallas didn't upgrade its backup goalie position for the season, sticking with Scott Wedgewood behind the usually fantastic Jake Oettinger. Well. Oettinger has struggled between injury stints, and Wedgewood has been taxed in the meantime. The Stars are a good team despite their below-average goaltending -- but will GM Jim Nill regret not adding a more reliable No. 2 option?

Auston Matthews reaches 40-goal mark before All-Star break

Auston Mathews scored his NHL-leading 40th goal to reach 600 career points, and the Toronto Maple Leafs completed a home-and-home sweep of the Winnipeg Jets with a 4-2 victory. Matthews scored from the high slot with 4:32 left. He extended his points streak to six games, with seven goals and three assists during the run.

Jets acquire C Sean Monahan from Canadiens for draft picks

The Winnipeg Jets have traded for Montreal Canadians center Sean Monahan, filling a vital hole in their lineup. Montreal acquired a 2024 first-round draft pick and a 2027 conditional third-round pick from the Jets. Monahan, 29, is an unrestricted free agent this summer. A former star center with the Calgary Flames, he turned his career around during his two years with the Canadiens, with 13 goals and 22 assists in 49 games this season. The Jets (30-12-5) are third in the Central Division, two points behind first-place Colorado with two games in hand.

NHLPA's Walsh says Coyotes' arena limbo 'not the way to run a business'

NHLPA executive director Marty Walsh believes the Arizona Coyotes should relocate if there isn't a suitable arena plan in place by the end of the 2023-24 NHL season. The Coyotes called Glendale home from 2003 until 2022, when the city council decided not to renew their arena lease. The team is playing its second season at Mullett Arena, a 5,000-seat building on the campus of Arizona State University. It was a temporary fix while owner Alex Meruelo sought to build a $2.1 billion entertainment district in Tempe, on a landfill owned by the city. But that plan was rejected by voters on a special election ballot last May, which sent the team scrambling for alternatives.

Islanders build two rinks outside arena for fans

The New York Rangers have built two public pond hockey rinks outside of UBS Arena that will host 4-on-4 tournaments and "learn to play" clinics in conjunction with USA Hockey. One rink will have natural ice for 4-on-4 youth and adult teams to hold games and tournaments. The other rink will have synthetic ice, ensuring season-long accessibility, and will cater to community programs that offer the fundamentals of hockey and skating to all age groups and skill levels. Both rinks will offer 90-minute public skate sessions. They'll be part of The Park at UBS Arena, a 155,800-square-foot, season-long outdoor experience that will feature a beer garden and a "VIP Igloo Garden." There are plans to use the rinks for Islanders pregame shows and for watch parties when the team is on the road.
