NHL, NBA, MLB unveil ad on responsible sports betting

The NBA, NHL and Major League Baseball have joined forces to produce a 30-second ad promoting responsible sports betting. The "Never Know What's Next" commercial unveiled Tuesday is a coordination of the three leagues, sportsbook operators DraftKings, Fanatics, PENN Entertainment and the National Council on Problem Gambling. "With more fans than ever having the opportunity to legally bet in their home states, it is imperative that we work with our media and sportsbook partners, as well as with our friends at the NBA and MLB, to inform and emphasize the risks and encourage the importance of setting limits and betting responsibly, especially among our growing fanbase in the younger demographic," NHL chief business officer Keith Wachtel said.

They ranged from Stanley Cup Playoff prognostications to breakout seasons to signings to firings. Many of those bold predictions are on the path to fulfilment, including one that already came true. But some of these predictions are ... less successful, including one that is wrong already.

Islanders build two rinks outside arena for fans

The New York Rangers have built two public pond hockey rinks outside of UBS Arena that will host 4-on-4 tournaments and "learn to play" clinics in conjunction with USA Hockey. One rink will have natural ice for 4-on-4 youth and adult teams to hold games and tournaments. The other rink will have synthetic ice, ensuring season-long accessibility, and will cater to community programs that offer the fundamentals of hockey and skating to all age groups and skill levels. Both rinks will offer 90-minute public skate sessions. They'll be part of The Park at UBS Arena, a 155,800-square-foot, season-long outdoor experience that will feature a beer garden and a "VIP Igloo Garden." There are plans to use the rinks for Islanders pregame shows and for watch parties when the team is on the road.

Kings blank Habs for record 11th straight road win to open year

Quinton Byfield had two goals and an assist, Cam Ralbot earned a shutout, and the Los Angeles Kings beat the Montreal Canadians 4-0 on Thursday night for their NHL-record 11th road victory to open the season. The Kings (16-4-3), who eclipsed the mark of 10 straight road wins set by the Buffalo Sabres in 2006-07, are one road win away from matching the NHL record of 12 straight at any point during a season.

Capitals, Wizards moving to Virginia in tentative state deal

Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin has reached a tentative agreement with the parent company of the NBA's Washington Wizards and NHL's Washington Capitals to move those teams from the District of Columbia to what he called a new "visionary sports and entertainment venue" in northern Virginia. The proposal, which would need the state legislature's approval, calls for the creation of a $2 billion sports and entertainment district south of Washington in Alexandria, just miles from the existing arena, Youngkin said in an interview with The Associated Press ahead of a news conference Wednesday at the site. It would include an arena for what would be the state's first major professional sports teams, as well as a new Wizards practice facility, a separate performing arts center, a media studio, new hotels, a convention center, housing and shopping.

When the Capitals and Wizards moved from suburban Maryland to D.C.'s Chinatown district in 1997 in what was then known as MCI Center, officials credited the arena with sparking a revival in downtown Washington. In recent years, critics who have faulted city officials for lax crime policies have said the neighborhood around the arena has suffered disproportionately. The administration expects the project to generate a combined $12 billion in economic impact for Virginia and the city of Alexandria in the coming decades and create around 30,000 new jobs, Youngkin's office said in a statement. Subject to legislative approval, it would break ground in 2025 and open in late 2028.

NHL Power Rankings: 1-32 poll, young core production index

As teams go through their cycles of contention, the importance of having a high-scoring young core can wax and wane. Then again, in a league which has had a relatively flat salary cap in recent seasons, getting production from your players on entry-level contracts (or second deals) is critical.

Canada's seven NHL franchises teaming up to fight ALS

Canada's seven NHL teams are banding together in support of the ALS Super Fund, a campaign to help fight Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) following the deaths of members of the league community in the country. Former NHL player Mark Kirton, who was diagnosed with ALS in 2018, is leading the effort. "The NHL community has felt the impact of ALS on many of its members. The disease moves rapidly, but access to potential therapies in Canada does not," Kirton said in a news release Friday. "There has never been a more promising time to change ALS from a terminal disease to a treatable condition. We are grateful to the NHL for recognizing the significant need to support Canadians with ALS." The fund is focused on advancing research and ensuring access to treatments and trials for all Canadians. ALS, better known as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a progressive neurological disease.

NHL agrees to keep 11 teams' local broadcasts on Bally Sports

The NHL and Diamond Sports Group, the largest owner of regional sports networks, have reached an agreement that will keep local broadcasts for 11 teams on Bally Sports through the end of this season. The agreement, which was contained in a court filing made Wednesday, is subject to court approval. Diamond Sports has been in Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings in the Southern District of Texas since it filed for protection in March. The company said in a financial filing last year that it had debt of $8.67 billion. While there will be a reduction in rights payments for some teams, the local rights for those 11 franchises will revert back to the NHL at the end of this season.

Capitals sign defenseman Ethan Bear to 2-year contract

Ethan Bear is back in the NHL following shoulder surgery after signing a two-year contract with the Washington Capitals. The 26-year-old is joining his fourth NHL organization after starting with Edmonton and playing one-season stints with Carolina and Vancouver. The Canucks did not tender Bear a restricted free agent offer last summer following the injury, relinquishing his rights and freeing him to sign with any team. Bear gives the Capitals extra depth on the blue line with a right-handed shot who has averaged nearly 19 minutes a game throughout his career. Bear has 63 points in 259 regular-season and playoff games.
