TMP(DE), TWoK, SFS, TVH, TUC, GEN, FS, -- All good Trek movies to be fair. Although there is big differences in quality across them and it's debatable on some of them.
Nemesis is just completley awful and the new movie won't have to do much to beat it and I don't doubt that it will. Though that's not much of a standard to aspire to.
I don't like the concept of a young TOS crew just BECAUSE the names are the most recognisable in Trek.
There is no other reason to go this route. And when you have a concept that is written primarily to bank on established names you're going to run in to trouble.
With Star Wars there was a legitamate reason to go back and tell the prequel story. It's fundemental to the OT and was something that everyone wanted to see (whether you liked the resulting movies or not is irrelevant we all wanted to see that origin story of how we got to the opening scene in the OT)
With this movie there is no POINT to see what Kirk and co were doing fresh out of the academy. Sure, there hasn't been much told on this period so it at least allows some storytelling to be done without screwing up established continuity too much but it's still going to completley fuck with the continuity on a major level and I do HATE to be the geek purist but I just can't get excited about that.
I don't like the idea of recasting the original crew since the images from TOS are too iconic and burned in to my brain. I really feel like I'm going to have SERIOUS immersion issues watching Sylar as a Spock and Pegg as Scotty.
Gene once said that the story possibilities of Trek are as endless as the universe itself. So why is the studio so obsessed with going back all the time?
That said I like Abhrams and I do think he will do something interesting with the movie and there is no danger of it being anywhere near as bad as Nemesis but that's not enough for me.
Maybe I'm just annoyed because going back to the Original Series is the last place I would set the movie ESPECIALLY with the original crew.
I see this as the last chance for Trek to really do something special and redeem itself for years and years of mediocre and at times downright awful dreck.
I will of course be watching the movie no matter what and I will probably get somewhat hyped as we move closer to the release date and I really, really, really want to be wrong and be blown away and for it all to fit in to place and the new cast to work on every level and blah blah blah.
At the moment I just think it's a big ask.
WE SHALL SEE.
