Official Trek 11 countdown/news thread

Who names their kid "Brent"?
I can name at least 4 prominent gay porn stars named Brent off the top of my head.

Brent Scowcroft is a cranky old Republican friend of W, but he has harshly criticized our invading Iraq so he gets a pass even though he's one o'them Mormons.

Brent Spiner was more of a theater actor before Trek came along. He goes back to it from time to time now. Theater actors are more batshit crazy by nature.

But nothing will top his recurring tour-de-force as the cafeteria news vendor on "Night Court".

Ah, yes, forgot about that. That, he did well.

I feel obliged to mention Independence Day, mad scientist, blah blah.

I saw him on Night Court the other day playing a character a bit like Cletus the slackjawed yokel. His unusual voice helped.

I wouldn't agree that more than half of the Trek movies are crap, though. Probably crap to people who don't like scifi, but as a fan I can enjoy watching more or less any of them. Insurrection and TFF are my only exceptions, and the only ones I don't have on DVD.

Oh, I probably could too, but they're still crap! Actually, Nemesis is one I'd never watch again. I could probably watch Insurrection on tv if there was nothing else on. Final Frontier at least has, umm, that bit where Scotty hits his head.

TMP(DE), TWoK, SFS, TVH, TUC, GEN, FS, -- All good Trek movies to be fair. Although there is big differences in quality across them and it's debatable on some of them.

Nemesis is just completley awful and the new movie won't have to do much to beat it and I don't doubt that it will. Though that's not much of a standard to aspire to.

I don't like the concept of a young TOS crew just BECAUSE the names are the most recognisable in Trek.

There is no other reason to go this route. And when you have a concept that is written primarily to bank on established names you're going to run in to trouble.

With Star Wars there was a legitamate reason to go back and tell the prequel story. It's fundemental to the OT and was something that everyone wanted to see (whether you liked the resulting movies or not is irrelevant we all wanted to see that origin story of how we got to the opening scene in the OT)

With this movie there is no POINT to see what Kirk and co were doing fresh out of the academy. Sure, there hasn't been much told on this period so it at least allows some storytelling to be done without screwing up established continuity too much but it's still going to completley fuck with the continuity on a major level and I do HATE to be the geek purist but I just can't get excited about that.

I don't like the idea of recasting the original crew since the images from TOS are too iconic and burned in to my brain. I really feel like I'm going to have SERIOUS immersion issues watching Sylar as a Spock and Pegg as Scotty.

Gene once said that the story possibilities of Trek are as endless as the universe itself. So why is the studio so obsessed with going back all the time?

That said I like Abhrams and I do think he will do something interesting with the movie and there is no danger of it being anywhere near as bad as Nemesis but that's not enough for me.

Maybe I'm just annoyed because going back to the Original Series is the last place I would set the movie ESPECIALLY with the original crew.

I see this as the last chance for Trek to really do something special and redeem itself for years and years of mediocre and at times downright awful dreck.

I will of course be watching the movie no matter what and I will probably get somewhat hyped as we move closer to the release date and I really, really, really want to be wrong and be blown away and for it all to fit in to place and the new cast to work on every level and blah blah blah.

At the moment I just think it's a big ask.

WE SHALL SEE.

My opinion: We'll end up with some godawful horrific bullshit most aptly described as Enterprise: The Motion Picture.

I have faith that it'll be true to the existing franchise in plot, but when I read quotes saying the bridge looks "perfect", I can't help but be very skeptical. From the very small portion that's been seen in photos, the style is nothing like TOS or anything else in Trek history. Instead it looks more like Galaxy Quest. They really have to get the style right, or I'll hate it just for that alone.

Maybe they mean it's a "perfect" UPDATING of the bridge for 21st century snesibilities with no bleeping lights.

Also: remember that bit in TUC where they had to speak Klingon so they took out some DUSTY OLD BOOKS? That was stupid.

It's gotta have a tailpipe.

Trek is allowed to be a little bit stupid at times and the TOS movies have pushed the boat out in that regard more than once but they're allowed to. Trek belongs to them.

They don't have the luxury with this movie. It's all new and it has to work on every level or it will all fall apart.

I don't want to get in to the "reboot" argument because it's stupid. I'm more concerned with immersion issues.

TUC in particular I find her to rewatch sometimes because every line just feels fucking weird. "There's an old Vulcan saying: only Nixon can go to China!" Umm, what? "Don't wait for the translation, answer me now!" How can I answer if it's not translated? That "tailpipe" thing. That Klingon saying nothing but Shakespeare lines. And the fucking dusty books. And the alarm going off when a phaser is fired(!?) And Spock raping Kim Catrell...that was hot, actually.

OH, and fucking Odo briefing the federation president or whoever on the TOP SECRET RESCUE MISSIONS...while the Romulan ambassador is in the room. YEAH, REAL SECRET.

I do like the Kirk versus Kirk fight, that's classic Trek. "Must have been your life long ambition!" indeed.

Umm, yeah, so TUC's a bit weird, which has nothing to do with Trek 11. I think they'll try to make it realistic but not like BSG style documentary realism. Maybe the visual leap will be similar to the visual leap from TOS to the Motion Picture?

"Don't wait for the translation, answer me now!" How can I answer if it's not translated?

"Chang's demand, "Don't wait for the translation! Answer me now!" is a reference to Adlai Stevenson's similar demand of Soviet Union representative Valerian Zorin at the United Nations during the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis"

Basically just hammering the Klingons = The Falling USSR thing TUC was going for.

TUC was a good old fashioned "who dunnit" in many ways. It's pulled off very well though.

But yeah, I'll admit, the Shakespeare stuff was taken to extremes and really didn't compliment what is meant to be an ALIEN species.

Oh well..

Still think it's great and it was Sulu's finest hour.

I loved TUC.

TUC is my favourite TOS movie other than TWOK, probably down to Nick Meyer's direction. I like the submarine feel in both movies and in TUC the way the Klingons are portrayed is more well rounded and interesting than ever before. Gorkon's actually an intelligent peacemaker, rather than Growling Klingon Warrior #47. There are some irksome things (such as Valeris basically being Saavik, but not (although that's better than recasting her yet again)) but it's very watchable and has some great lines you can blurt out in real life and not sound weird.

I don't say "My god!" in real life.

I say My........................................ GOD

The sad thing is, that cup that got smashed at the beginning only had two days till retirement.

I say "this is fun" when I'm on the tube and it's rattling apart, a la Dr McCoy. :)

I'D GIVE REAL MONEY IF HE'D SHUT UP.
