The other factor in that is the changing attitude toward disposable electronics in a new ecological age. Companies have gotten away with shortening the lifespans of their products since the computer boom began. The current philosophy of "cheaper to buy a new one than get the old one fixed" isn't going to last forever. People will buy cell phones irregardless of the economy. Phones break, people need new ones. The cost of changing the shape of the plastic case for a model and adding in the right ring tone is negligible.
The only problem with this logic: Trekkies don't go out on dates.A bigger question is, how many people are willing to tag themselves as Trekkies every time the phone rings? Some people are going to be on a date when they get a call and be too embarrassed to answer--"I told you never to call me here."![]()
