I still haven't watched Avatar. I missed it when it was at the theatre here and wasn't too upset by the fact.
Usually a big Sci-Fi spectacular would be on the top of my wish list of movies to go and see. Especially considering all the edgy thought provoking suicidally depressing drama's I'm dragged to on a regular basis.
The fact that I haven't watched this movie --yet I never stop hearing about it-- has really turned me off the whole thing to be honest. And after reading all the dissenting opinions in favour and against I'm even more annoyed.
It seems to me that everyone agrees that the CGI really is very special and from a technical standpoint this is a home run. It's also clear that everyone, both those who approve and disapprove, agree that the story is far too weak and probably a rip-off as well. The dialogue seems to be pretty bad also since as much exposure as this movie has had I don't see much in the way of quotable lines being bandied about.
Where am I going with this post?
Well I was going to go in to one of my regular Star Wars Prequel apologist rants but I'll try and reign it in.
I am a fan of the Prequels though I can see the problems in them as well. But playing Devils Advocate with the haters what did people DESPISE about the Prequels? Mainly the dialogue, acting and some shaky character choices, right? Some people also get pissy about "TOO MUCH CGI" but they're cocks.
The Star Wars Prequels sound FAR more original and deeper than Avatar could ever dream to be yet they were universally panned by critics and totally ignored by the industry. Return of the Sith
WASN'T EVEN NOMINATED for the SFX Oscar!
Avatar and James Cameron on the other hand are now industry darlings and he is showered with awards and praise. I'm not sure what my final point here is but I felt like moaning at how unfair it is.
