Star Trek 12 news/countdown thread

They know how to make a good trailer.

I think we've covered the "it doesn't look like Star Trek" thing enough, but I'll just mention that "Darkness Is Coming" sounds lame and Harrison has a GIANT SHIP like Nero did.

A giant Excelsiorish ship with speed holes in the saucer! There was actually a precedent for this in the previous movie when they passed through the debris field over Vulcan and there was a ginormous saucer hanging there among the ships.

Does look like it'll be really entertaining, though.

The bit that stood out for me was where Kirk apologised to his crew. That is a very Kirk thing to do.

They should make Free Enterprise 2, so the characters and Shatner can make bitter comments about the reboot franchise.

"That would be ...

GLORIOUS!"

Forgot to mention I was surprised they didn't delay this trailer since it features a terrorist attack, but I guess that'd be letting the terrorist whoevers win.

Chris Pine and Zachary look excellent.

Simon Pegg basically said "I cannae fix it..."

I liked the trailer though. It's good not to have DRAMA HORN blasting quicker and quicker which every trailer seems to have at the moment.

Plot-wise, it's an alternate universe.

Hollywood mecha-moneymaking giant robot-wise, it's a franchise reboot.

The term "reboot" means something very specific, it really doesn't fit here. Essentially a reboot ignores everything else that came before, and pretends it never existed. Basically the equivalent of tearing down a restaurant and rebuilding it from the ground up with the same name. What Abrams did was essentially build an addition to the existing restaurant to expand it's footprint, while leaving the original section intact. The Prime Universe still exists, and any new TV series will probably take place in it, since CBS owns the TV rights and Paramount owns the movie rights. The two companies don't really play very well together. From the perspective of the Prime Universe, Nero and Spock are a giant missing persons case. In fact, Star Trek Online is set in the Prime Universe after to Hobus event, after Nero and Spock disappeared. The interesting thing is, Star Trek XI was very much like "In a Mirror, Darkly" (ENT) The same concept, same development.

As far as your definition of a reboot, that really would include TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT, basically anything after TOS. They were all attempts to revitalize a nearly dead franchise and generate lots of money.

I hear disturbing rumours that my prefared cinema of choice is only going to show the film in 3D, if this turns out to be all the cinemas, as with what happened with Dredd, denying us the right to see a film that is also available in 2D just to rake us for the extra ticket price, then this will be the first ever star trek film I don't see at pictures.

Yup, I've taken to seeking out the 2D versions of movies, though this is much more to do with how they look than the cost. But the extra cost is a real pisstake if there's no 2D option. A few weeks back I saw a 3D movie that cost £17. For one ticket. Granted it was at a central London cinema aimed at tourists, but still unbelievable.
