Lately, I've become a fan of tv shows that offer a smaller number of episodes with a tighter overall arc. The Shield, The Wire, True Blood, Dexter-all have seasons that are 12-13 episodes instead of the normal 22 or so. Generally, this allows the writers to be more focused, and the overall quality of the season is much better.
However, what's sorely lacking in shorter seasons is a chance to diverge from the overall arc, and more fully explore a character in depth. When done correctly, in the hands of a good creator, these "throwaway" episodes are anything but. Angel, Buffy, Veronica Mars, Lost-these shows had the luxury of devoting entire episodes to one character each season, with the main characters appearing either in the framing sequences or just peripherally. Granted, these usually occured in the 3rd or 4th season, after characters had been fairly well-established. Remember the episode of Buffy that was entirely about Jonathan? Great episode!
I think True Blood would do well to try and do this. Imagine an episode that was totally Lafayette-centric. Or maybe, half about Eric and half about Bill's past. Quite frankly, this season is trying to follow too many storylines, and none of them are properly served. Anyone agree? Disagree?
