True Blood "Release Me"

when godrick turns eric a couple eps ago, i thought that the actor that played godrick got it right, "it" being a ancient badass offering immortality.

I enjoyed the ep. We just watched it last night. Any show that can keep me on the edge of my seat and pissed that I have to wait a week to see the next one gets an A+ in my book. I admit the series dragged at first but I'm a total fan now.

Lately, I've become a fan of tv shows that offer a smaller number of episodes with a tighter overall arc. The Shield, The Wire, True Blood, Dexter-all have seasons that are 12-13 episodes instead of the normal 22 or so. Generally, this allows the writers to be more focused, and the overall quality of the season is much better.

However, what's sorely lacking in shorter seasons is a chance to diverge from the overall arc, and more fully explore a character in depth. When done correctly, in the hands of a good creator, these "throwaway" episodes are anything but. Angel, Buffy, Veronica Mars, Lost-these shows had the luxury of devoting entire episodes to one character each season, with the main characters appearing either in the framing sequences or just peripherally. Granted, these usually occured in the 3rd or 4th season, after characters had been fairly well-established. Remember the episode of Buffy that was entirely about Jonathan? Great episode!

I think True Blood would do well to try and do this. Imagine an episode that was totally Lafayette-centric. Or maybe, half about Eric and half about Bill's past. Quite frankly, this season is trying to follow too many storylines, and none of them are properly served. Anyone agree? Disagree?

I agree about there being too many storylines. The TV show has more than the book did, probably because the viewers have to be satisfied in an ongoing way, whereas in a book you get what you get.

Most of my favorite shows are of the shorter season variety. True Blood, Rescue Me, In Plain Sight, etc.. Part of it may be that they can be more focused, but I think it also has to do with the freedom of being a cable show. Not as much pressure to satisfy advertisers.

The too many storylines was why I hated last week's episode, because EVERY MAJOR CHARACTER was left in some doom-filled cliffhanger, and it's only the 6th or 7th ep of the season, like WTF!

But this ep was very very good and crawled out of most of the holes admirably or at least not embarrassingly. Can't go wrong with Andy lookin' for some pig to save the day.

I hope somebody kills Maryann soon, even tho it is RO LAREN and I love her, I still think her whole story arc is kind of dumb, I mean, how else can this end except that she finally becomes too annoying and they figure out a way to make her go away or die? It's like the patented Buffy Unbeatable Villain of the Week™.

Oh gee. Dawn's in trouble. Must be Tuesday.

But there's much more going on with this show right now and I still enjoy it a lot, as long as they keep giving Jason scenes where he looks like a confused altar boy and takes his clothes off AMEN.

And you get to tell him to open his mouth for COCKMUNION!

oooh!

Yes, yes...I'm here all day.

Does anyone think the Hyot/Jessica story is going to go "dark" soon? They seem too happy at the moment. I imagine there will be some twist, maybe anti-vampire bigots hassling them when they go back to Cabot Cove, or Jessica eating Hyot's mother or something.

His mother needs to be eaten.

and not in the good way.

Well, I hope it doesn't go too dark. Their sweetness kinda shines out of all the darkness that already goes on in the show.

Yeah, I'm hoping they don't fuck them up too much.

There's no drama without conflict.

And there's no happy ending without drama.

And there's no Drama without Vince, Turtle, E, and Ari.

And there's no drama without Jeremy Piven being caught in the air by Jon Cena, then Dr. Ken trying to attack him with a light saber.

That Doctor Ken thing was FUCKING ATROCIOUS on RAW. I'm glad it bumped its head at the end.

Jeremy Piven was on Regis & Kelly today, and he's so ADHD it's hard to caption. He thinks he's funny, but he's hit or miss for me.

True Blood would do well to feature some Patsy Cline music, occasionally.
