Thach Named CAA Co-Player of the Year​


UNCW's Tamer Thach and Northeastern's Tyler MacGregor were honored as Co-Players of the Year by the Coastal Athletic Association coaches the league announced on the eve of the 2024 CAA Championship Tournament at Brooks Field. Thach, who also earned First Team All-CAA honors, became the ninth Seahawk to be named Player of the Year and the second in three seasons, joining Brooks Baldwin in 2022. Since 2016, a UNCW player has earned the honor five times.

Thach exploded his sophomore season, setting UNCW single-season and career home run marks as well as the CAA single-season mark. Thach enters the conference tournament hitting .321 with 26 home runs and 70 runs batted in, also a career-high. In conference play, he is hitting .353 with 13 round trippers and 37 runs batted in. In two seasons, Thach has hit 41 home runs and knocked in 138 runs. Joining Thach on the First Team were red-shirt seniors Jac Croom and Trevor Marsh, red-shirt sophomore RJ Sales, and red-shirt junior Luke Craig.

UNCW wins the 2024 CAA Baseball Championship; will advance to NCAA Regionals​


For the second straight year, UNCW Baseball was won the CAA Baseball Championship. Entering Sunday’s match up, UNCW has yet to lose a game in the CAA Tournament, needing one single victory over the College of Charleston to claim the title. The Seahawks would struggle in the first few innings with errors of the defensive end which allowed Charleston to take an 4-1 lead through three innings. However, the Seahawks would rally later in the game after making a pitching change and getting some helps from hitters Tanner Thach and Trevor Marsh. UNCW reclaimed the lead in the 7th inning 5-4, with pitcher Trace Baker giving six innings, allowing Luke Craig to come close out the game. UNCW will find out who and where they will play Monday afternoon with the tournament selection show airing on ESPN2 at 12PM.

UNCW Heads To NCAA Athens Regional​


Two-time reigning Coastal Athletic Association champion UNCW will face Georgia Tech at 7 p.m. on Friday in the second game of the NCAA Athens Regional it was announced on Monday. The Seahawks (39-19) join the Yellowjackets (31-23), host Georgia (39-15) and Patriot League champion Army (31-21) in the Athens Regional. Georgia is the top-seed in the regional and the seventh overall seed in the 64-team field. For UNCW, which will be the second seed, it will be its 12th regional appearance overall and the fourth in the last six tournaments. UNCW last played in Athens during the 2004 season and split a pair of midweek games. UNCW and Georgia Tech have split four games but haven't played since 1987. The Seahawks and Army have met once, coming during the 2013 Charlottesville Regional. UNCW knocked off the Black Knights, 9-5, in an elimination game.

Woods Elevates Taylor to Director of Operations​


UNCW women's basketball Head Coach Nicole Woods has elevated program assistant Madison Taylor to the Seahawks' Director of Operations role for the 2024-25 season. Taylor joined the women's basketball program in June 2023 and spent last season as a critical aid for Woods in her first season in the Port City. Taylor's primary duties as Director of Operations will include overseeing all operational logistics while executing a comprehensive academic and athletic plan to ensure student-athlete and program success.n As program assistant, Taylor assisted the Seahawks on multiple fronts including travel, team calendar, special events, social media, and community service. "Madison is the epitome of a servant leader. She wore many different hats last season and excelled in them all," said Woods. "She wasn't given this promotion, she earned it. We are grateful to still have her!"

Regional Preview: Vs. Georgia Tech​


UNCW makes its 12th NCAA Regional appearance Friday at 7 p.m. when it faces third-seeded Georgia Tech at Foley Field in game two of the Athens Regional. The Seahawks captured their conference-record eighth tournament title by rallying past top-seeded College of Charleston, 6-4, in the championship game of the Coastal Athletic Association tournament earlier this week at Brooks Field. At 39-19, UNCW enters the regional as the sixth time as the number two seed. The Yellowjackets, meanwhile, carry a mark of 31-23 into the weekend after earning an at-large bid. The two programs have not met since 1987 and stand at a two-all deadlock in the brief series. All games of the regional will be streamed on ESPN+.

UNCW Cruises Past Georgia Tech, 9-0​


R.J. Sales scattered three hits over 7.1 innings and Bryan Arendt belted a second-inning grand slam as UNCW cruised past Georgia Tech, 9-0, in game two of the NCAA Athens Regional on Friday at Foley Field. The Seahawks (40-19) take on top-seeded Georgia (40-15) on Saturday at 6 p.m. The Yellowjackets (31-24), meanwhile, will face Army in an elimination game at noon. Arendt gave the Seahawks a 4-0 lead with a grand slam in the second inning off losing pitcher Brett Thomas (4-2). The Seahawks loaded the bases against the righthander when Brock Willis was hit by a pitch. Arendt followed Wills with his ninth homer of the season, coming off a 1-2 offering. Arendt led the Seahawks with a program regional record-tying five runs batted in. Trevor Marsh collected two hits as his hitting streak stretched to 16 games. Kevin Jones added a two-run single in a five-run eighth and Jac Croom doubled in two runs in that inning. Sales earned the win to move to 11-3 after tossing 7.1 shutout innings. Sales allowed three hits, walked four and struck out six. He recorded 13 ground ball outs. The Seahawks posted their eighth 40-win season and snapped a five-game losing streak in the NCAA regionals. Sales combined with Luke Craig and Baker Cox to record UNCW's first shutout in regional play.

UNCW Knocked Off By Georgia Tech, 3-1​


Georgia Tech's Cam Jones lifted the Yellow Jackets into the NCAA Athens Regional Championship round with a seven-inning, one-run effort on Sunday in a 3-1 win over UNCW at Foley Field. The Yellow Jackets pushed their record to 33-24 while the Seahawks concluded their season at 40-21. It was UNCW's eighth 40-win season in program history. With the game tied at 1-all, the Yellow Jackets took control in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run homer to left off the bat of Mike Becchetti off Zane Taylor (5-1) for a 3-1 lead. Jones (4-2) limited the Seahawks to six hits and the only run came on an RBI double by Tanner Thach in the top of the second inning. The righthander also chipped in two runs and stole two bases. Thach paced the Seahawks with hits. Taylor took the loss, the first of the season for the junior. He allowed three runs on five hits over 3.1 innings while striking out four. UNCW's bullpen held GT scoreless over the final 4.2 innings, allowing just two hits. UNCW red-shirt sophomore RJ Sales was named to the regional All-Tournament team following his gem againts Georgia Tech in UNCW's first game of the regional.

Neal Promotes Barnes to Associate Head Coach​


UNCW women's soccer Head Coach Chris Neal has announced the promotion of Dr. Colin Barnes to Associate Head Coach ahead of the 2024 season. Barnes has spent the previous two years as an assistant coach for the Seahawks program. A veteran coach with over two decades of playing and coaching experience, Barnes was recently named a South Region technical advisor for the United States Youth Soccer Association's Olympic Development Program. "Colin is very deserving of this promotion, and I am very happy for him. On top of being a highly respected professional in our industry, he is a relentless worker behind the scenes," said Neal, who enters his seventh season at his alma mater. "The amount of above-and-beyond hours he puts in, on behalf of our student-athletes and team, is astonishing.

Dr. Krasnow Joins UNCW Athletics Staff​


UNCW Director of Athletics Michael Oblinger has announced the addition of Dr. Meghan Krasnow as Director of Student-Athlete Well Being. "We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Krasnow as the inaugural Director of Student-Athlete Well-Being," said Oblinger. "Since my first day on the job, establishing this position has been a top priority. Dr. Krasnow brings a wealth of experience and a passionate commitment to mental health, making her a great fit for this critical role. Her leadership and expertise will undoubtedly enhance the well-being of our student-athletes, fostering a supportive environment where they can thrive both on and off the field. Additionally, Dr. Krasnow will play a key role in educating our coaches and athletics staff, ensuring a comprehensive approach to the mental health and overall well-being of our entire athletic community." Dr. Meghan Krasnow is a Licensed Psychologist who specializes in counseling and sport & performance psychology. In her role, she will provide clinical services, education, resources, and programming to support the holistic development and well-being of student-athletes at UNCW.

Jones Makes MLB Debut For Rockies​


UNCW baseball alum Greg Jones became the 14th Seahawk to play at the major league level on Thursday when he took the field for the Colorado Rockies against the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium. Jones joins Landen Roupp of the San Francisco Giant as Seahawks who made their Major League Baseball debut this season. Roupp did so on Mar. 29, against San Diego. Jones entered the game, a 3-2 win over the Cardinals, as a defensive replacement in right field in the bottom of the ninth. Jones was a first-round draft selection of the Tampa Bay Rays in 2019 following two seasons at UNCW. In both seasons, he started at shortstop and helped the program to back-to-back Colonial Athletic Association tournament championships. The former CAA Player of the Year in 2019, Jones began spring training with the Rays but was dealt to the Rockies in late March and opened the season at the Triple-A level in Albuquerque. Jones scored 19 runs and stole 15 bases before an injury forced him to the sidelines. He returned to action on June 1.

Men's Basketball Announce Non-Conference Home Opponents​


Head men's basketball coach Takayo Siddlw has announced UNCW's non-conference home opponents for the 2024-25 season. "There are many factors that go into scheduling non-conference games," said Siddle. "This year, in particular, having multiple home games against quality opponents was at the top of our list. With the help o Kurt Kanaskief, we were able to achieve that. We are very excited to play in front of our amazing fans and supporters." The Seahawks host Georgia Southern, Marshall, Florida Gulf Coast and UNC Asheville. Rounding out the home schedule are games with Mount Olive and Spartanburg Methodist. UNCW played all four Division I opponents on the road last season and came away with a perfect 4-0 record. UNCW season ticket renewals are due by June 21. Two Seahawks Earn ABCA All-Region Honors​


UNCW placed two Seahawks, Tanner Thach and R.J. Sales, on the American Baseball Coaches Association 2024 ABCA/Rawlings All-Atlantic Region teams released on Tuesday. Thach earned first-team honors at first base while Sales was a second-team honoree as a starting pitcher. Thach, who was the Coastal Athletic Association's Co-Player of the Year and a first-team All-CAA selection, smashed UNCW's home run record for a single season and career. As a sophomore, Thach launched a program single-season record 27 home runs, which was also a Coastal Athletic Association record. Thach batted .324 while posting career-highs in runs (59) and runs batted in (75).

Sales was the ace of the pitching staff, posting an 11-3 record in a career-best 16 starts. His 11 wins were second most in program history. Sales fashioned an earned run average of 3.41 and limited opponents to a meager .206 batting average. As a red-shirt sophomore, Sales posted a 6-2 record in conference play and was named first-team All-CAA. The Seahawks defended their CAA tournament title in 2024 and advanced to the NCAA Regionals for a 12th time, all coming since 2003. UNCW posted a 40-21 record, marking the eighth time in program history it won at least 40 games.

Six Programs Earn National Distinction In APR Report​


The UNCW Athletics Department had six programs rank among the nation's best in the annual Academic Progress Rate, released by the NCAA earlier this week. UNCW's baseball, Men's Cross Country, Women's Cross Country, Men's Soccer, Softball, and Volleyball were honored with Public Recognition Awards, which go to teams earning multiyear Academic Progress Rates in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sport. In addition to those posting perfect scores, programs posting scores of 990 or higher include Baseball (995), Men's Soccer (997), Men's Swimming and Diving (990), Women's Swimming and Diving (990), Men's Track and Field (995) and Women's Soccer (995).

The Coastal Athletic Association was tied for sixth among the nation's 32 Division I conferences in the latest overall Academic Progress Rate for the 2022-23 academic year, which was released by the NCAA on Tuesday. CAA schools achieved a combined APR of 989, which was well above the national average of 984. The APR included data from the 2019-20 academic year through the 2022-23 academic year.

Men's Tennis Ranked In Mid-Major Poll​


Reigning Coastal Athletic Association champion UNCW was ranked 21st nationally in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association mid-major poll which was released earlier this week. The Seahawks finished the season with a record of 17-6 and captured their third straight conference championship with a 4-1 win over Elon in late April. UNCW advanced to the NCAA Regionals for the fourth consecutive season and its 10th overall appearance. In the ITA Carolina Regional rankings, the Seahawks were eighth as a program and the doubles tandem of Reece Falck and Harold Huens was also eighth.

Thach Slugs His Way To All-America Honors​


UNCW sophomore first baseman Tanner Thach continued to etch his name in the program's history on Wednesday when he was named All-America by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. Thach, who earned Third Team honors, adds this latest accolade to a list that includes Coastal Athletic Association Co-Player of the Year, First Team All-CAA, and most recently, ABCA First Team All-Atlantic Region. As a sophomore, Thach became the program's all-time home run leader with 42 roundtrippers to his credit. He launched a program-record 27 homers this season, which was also a CAA single-season record. Thach posted career-highs in 10 offensive categories, including batting average (.324), runs scored (59), hits (81), runs batted in (75), total bases (175), slugging average (.700), on base average (.406) and stolen bases (4).

Women's Basketball Announces Non-Conference Home Opponents​

Head women's basketball coach Nicola Woods has announced UNCW's non-conference home opponents for the 2024-25 campaign. The Seahawks will host The Apprentice School, Clinton College, Longwood, West Georgia, Winthrop and MEAC Champion Norfolk State in non-conference action at Trask Coliseum this season. "Our home non-conference schedule features last year's MEAC champion Norfolk State as well as our opponent in our most exciting game last year in Winthrop," said Woods. "We are really looking forward to showcasing our new team in front of our fans in Trask!" UNCW enters the season under Woods armed with nine newcomers and six returnees, headlined by Coastal Athletic Association All-Rookie guard Taylor Henderson and graduate guard Evan Miller.
