Seven Women's Golfers Earn WGCA Honors​

Seven UNCW women's golf student-athletes have been recognized as All-American Scholars by the Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) for the 2023-24 academic year.

Adam recorded a 75.57 average in 21 rounds and seven tournaments as a senior. The Pinehurst, N.C., product authored three rounds below par this season, including two one-unders at the Landfall Tradition, and finished tied for 10th with a 76-78-78=232 scorecard at the CAA Championships.

Altman played 16 rounds with a 76.19 average. The 5-7 sophomore opened the season with an even-par 71 score in the first round of the Golfweek Fall Challenge and fired a one-under in the second round of the Clemson Invitational.

Brinker, who returned from injury to play 27 rounds with a 75.19 scoring average, earned CA All-Tournament Team status after finishing fourth at the 2024 CAA Championships in Southport last April.

Fobes, a four-time All-Coastal Athletic Association First-Teamer, authored a school single-season best 72.89 scoring average across nine tournaments and 27 rounds in 2023-24. The fifth-year earned three top-10 finishes this season, highlighted by a win at the 2023 Golfweek Fall Challenge last September.

Levy, who earned WGCA honors for the second straight year, competed in 26 rounds as a redshirt sophomore, including 10 rounds of par or better. She opened the year with a share of second place at the Golfweek Fall Challenge and concluded her season with a tie for first place in the Women's National Golf Invitational.

Rooijmans received the first WGCA All-American Scholar distinction of her career after a freshman season in which she played in 27 rounds with a 74.83 scoring average. The Eersel, Netherlands, native totaled three top-15 finishes including a share of 14th place at the CAA Championships.

Spair, a redshirt sophomore, is a WGCA All-American Scholar for the third straight year. The Memphis transfer played in 15 rounds across five tournaments with a 78.13 scoring average.

Four Seahawks Earn CAA Leadership and Sport Excellence Awards​

Four UNCW student-athletes – senior sprinter Nickolis Anderson, fifth-year golfer Mallory Fobes, junior defender Josef Hefele and senior defender Makaya Parham - have been recognized by the Coastal Athletic Association with its prestigious Leadership and Sport Excellence Award for the 2023-24 academic year. One student-athlete who represents the highest standards of teamwork, integrity, leadership and sportsmanship in his or her academic and athletic achievements was selected in each of the other 20 non-football and basketball sports sponsored by the conference. The CAA's Faculty Athletic Representatives voted on the winners. Seventeen Seahawks have been singled out since the recognition began six years ago.

Seahawks to Travel to The Bahamas in Late July​

The UNCW men's basketball program will embark on a six-day, five-night Foreign Tour and team bonding trip to The Bahamas in late July. The Seahawks are scheduled to depart on Friday, July 26, for Nassau and return on Wednesday, July 31. While abroad, UNCW will play two local Bahamian teams at the Kendal GL Isaacs Gym as well as participate in team-building activities around the island. The UNCW players and staff will also spend a day at the Bahamas Children's Emergency Hostel, a children's orphanage, in Nassau. NCAA rules allow college basketball programs to take a foreign tour every four years where teams can play exhibition games abroad against international competition. In previous foreign tours, UNCW visited Italy in 2019 and the Bahamas in 2011 and 2015. The Seahawks also toured France in 1994.

Dubois Signed Through 2026-27​

UNCW Director of Athletics Michael Oblinger has announced men's head tennis coach Mait Dubois has signed a contract to remain with the Seahawks through the 2026-27 season. Dubois, the winningest coach in program history, recently captured his 10th Coastal Athletic Association men's tennis conference tournament championship with a 4-1 win over Elon. The Seahawks became the first CAA program to win four straight championships since VCU did so in the late 1990's. The Seahawks, who reached as high as 54th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings, finished the 2024 season with a 17-6 mark and competed in the NCAA Raleigh Regional. Dubois is a nine-time CAA Coach of the Year and has twice been recognized as the ITA Regional Coach of the Year.

Seahawk Club Shatters Fundraising Mark​

The UNCW Seahawk Club has announced it raised a record $4,019,746 during the 2024 fiscal year, a 50% increase from the previous year. That number encompasses gifts received (paid throughout July 1, 2023 – June 30, 2024) as well as future commitments secured within that time frame. Historically, the Seahawk Club's focal point has been the annual scholarship fund for the department of athletics. Since 2014, the scholarship goal has been reached every year, and in 2024, the goal was a record high of $1.25 million.

Fiscal Year 2024 by the Numbers:

$1,506,200 = Multi-Year Major Gift Commitments
$1,318,409 = Annual Fund (General/Sport Specific Scholarship Funds)
$1,195,137 = Event Revenue/Other Gifts

The 2024 amount eclipsed the previous record mark of $3,867,045 raised during the 2018 fiscal year.

Seahawks Women's Soccer Announce 2024 Slate​

The UNCW women's soccer program has announced an 18-game regular season schedule that includes nine opponents from the Carolinas in 2024. The Seahawks will play nine home matches at the UNCW Soccer Stadium, nine road contests and two preseason friendlies as it embarks on the seventh year of UNCW Head Coach Chris Neeal's tenure. The 2024 campaign kicks off in the Queen City on Thursday, Aug. 15 at Charlotte before UNCW plays UNC Greensboro in its home opener on Sunday, Aug. 18. The Seahawks will also host regional rivals Coastal Carolina, East Carolina and High Point in non-conference play. UNCW will visit two-time defending Sun Belt Champion and NCAA Tournament participant Old Dominion as well as Duke in preparation for a 10-game Coastal Athletic Association slate.

Men's Soccer Unveils 2024 Schedule​

Eight regular season home matches at the UNCW Soccer Stadium, featuring a mid-October meeting vs. Wake Forest, highlight the 2024 schedule for the Seahawk men's soccer program. UNCW will traverse through a 17-game regular season, including non-conference road matches at NC State and UNC Greensboro. The Seahawks will play eight Coastal Athletic Association contests including a visit to defending league champion Hofstra and a home match vs. Charleston.

UNCW To Host Live Oak Bank Holiday Classic​

UNCW Director of Athletics Michael Oblinger has announced the Seahawks will host the 2024 Live Oak Bank Holiday Classic, a multi-team exempt event, with Sam Houston, Colgate and Appalachian State rounding out the tournament field. The round-robin event will take place from Nov. 27-30 at Trask Coliseum. Wednesday, Nov. 27, will have the Appalachian State and Sam Houston open the tournament followed by the Seahawks and Colgate. The classic returns to action with two games on Nov. 29 and 30.

"We are excited to bring our fans more games in Trask Coliseum," said Oblinger. "These holiday tournaments are played all over the country and adding Wilmington to that list will be a wonderful accomplishment for our university and community. Thanks to Chip Mahan, BJ Losch, and Live Oak Bank for their continued support." The tournament field combined for 94 wins with all four programs winning at least 21 games.

Shannon Earns All-CAA Preseason Honors​

UNCW junior defender Jake Shannon has been named to the Coastal Athletic Association Men's Soccer Preseason Team as voted on by the league's 11 head coaches. Shannon is a two-time All-CAA Third-Teamer who has played in all 33 games and all but one possible minute over the last two seasons for the Seahawks. The Apex, N.C., native has anchored a UNCW backline that has produced 17 shutouts in that span. Shannon was named team captain (along with senior Josef Hefele and junior Ethan Newsome) prior to this season after recording six shots, four on goal, as a sophomore one season ago. UNCW was picked seventh in the league's preseason poll while three-time defending champion Hofstra topped the CAA's predicted order of finish. Monmouth and Delaware also received first-place votes.

Fischer Named Head Beach Volleyball Coach​

UNCW Director of Athletics Michael Oblinger has announced the hiring of David Fischer to serve as head coach of the beach volleyball program. "I'm excited to have David's leadership as we start a new era here at UNCW!," said Oblinger. "It has been a priority for me to split the indoor and beach programs since stepping onto campus. We will continue to be competitive on the court and in the classroom, this is just the beginning." Fischer served as an assistant in the volleyball program since its first season in 2016 and helped the Seahawks to a 136-124 overall record in nine seasons. UNCW posted a 22-12 mark last season and reached the semifinals of the Sun Belt Conference Championship. The Seahawks were 10-3 against members of the SBC last spring.

Woods Elevates Taylor to Director of Operations​

UNCW women's basketball Head Coac Nicole Woods has elevated program assistant Madison Taylor to the Seahawks' Director of Operations role for the 2024-25 season. Taylor joined the women's basketball program in June 2023 and spent last season as a critical aid for Woods in her first season in the Port City. Taylor's primary duties as Director of Operations will include overseeing all operational logistics while executing a comprehensive academic and athletic plan to ensure student-athlete and program success. As program assistant, Taylor assisted the Seahawks on multiple fronts including travel, team calendar, special events, social media, and community service.

A four-year letter winner for Charleston, Taylor made 101 appearances, including 52 starts, during her playing career in the Lowcountry. She averaged 4.7 points, 2.4 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 20.9 minutes across her four seasons. Taylor enjoyed her best season as a sophomore in 2019-20. The Raleigh, N.C., native averaged 6.7 markers, dished out 37 assists and collected 41 steals, the third-highest on the team. Taylor graduated from Charleston with a bachelor's degree in Public Health in 2022. She later earned a master's degree from VCU's Center for Sport Leadership in 2023.

UNCW Nets Two ITA Rankings In Fall​

Entering his final season as a member of the UNCW men's tennis program, senior Harold Huens opens the fall season ranked nationally both as an individual and as part of a doubles tandem. Huens, who is ranked 76th nationally in singles, helped the Seahawks to their fourth straight Coastal Athletic Association championship last spring and finished the spring with an 11-5 record in 16 matches at the number one singles position. He was named the CAA Player of the Year as well as the tournament's Most Outstanding Player. Huens and newcomer Joseph Wayand are ranked 40th nationally in the preseason rankings. Wayand begins his career with the Seahawks following three seasons at NC State. While with the Wolfpack, Wayand earned ITA Double All-America, NCAA All-America, and All-ACC honors (third team and All-Academic) during his sophomore season.
