Ukraine war live updates: Russia launches new missile strikes; Moldova’s government collapses

Moldova’s Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilita said Friday that her government was resigning following a volatile 18 months in power and an ongoing war at its border. Gavrilita did not say whether the decision was in direct response to the war between neighboring Ukraine and Russia. The announcement came shortly after the country’s defense ministry said a Russian missile violated its airspace and summoned its Russian envoy amid a fresh Russian assault on Ukraine. Explosions were heard across the Ukrainian capital Kyiv Friday, with missiles targeting several high-voltage facilities across the country and disrupting power supply. Moscow is launching another major offensive focused primarily on eastern Ukraine, with Russian military attempting to break through defenses close to the town of Kreminna, the governor for the Luhansk region said. The southeastern city of Zaporizhzhia was hit with at least 17 missiles in an hour, according to local officials, while Kharkiv also reported about 10 explosions and said power had been cut in some areas.

White House mocks Putin's mismanagement of the war in Ukraine, saying he changes generals like 'socks'

  • The White House mocked Putin's handling of the Ukraine war on Monday.
  • NSC spokesperson John Kirby said Putin changes generals like "I change socks."
  • Russia has already had several commanders in charge in Ukraine in less than a year of fighting.
The White House mocked Russian President Vladimir Putin's handling of the war in Ukraine on Monday, pointing to the frequent turnover among the generals placed in charge of the ongoing invasion. "Clearly Mr. Putin is not making good decisions," National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby told reporters. "It's borne out by the fact that he continues to change generals the way I change socks." The war in Ukraine has not yet lasted a full year, but there's already a growing list of generals who've been tapped to spearhead Russian operations before getting fired or demoted.

Bakhmut will eventually fall but that is no big lose as it was never a strategic town. The main reason to hold it so long was that extensive fortifications have been there since 2014 and so it was a good place to bleed Russia and destroy tons of Russian equipment. Ukraine has done that for almost a year straight now so at least it has served it's purpose.

Russia-Ukraine war live: Luhansk governor denies Russian claims of breakthrough in the region

A British national who was killed in Ukraine has been named by family and friends as Jonathan Shenkin.
Shenkin, 45, from Glasgow, “died as a hero in an act of bravery as a paramedic”, his family wrote in a tribute on social media. He is the eighth Briton to be killed in Ukraine since the conflict began nearly a year ago.
In a post on Facebook, Shenkin’s family said he died in Ukraine in December. They said:

On enlisting in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, he made the ultimate sacrifice to defend values we all believe in. He is survived by his son and daughter, to whom he was devoted.

Born and raised in Glasgow, Shenkin lived in London and Malta before joining the Israeli army. His family say he ran his own security business and worked in Iraq, Afghanistan, Oman, Somalia, Angola, the Philippines and South Korea.
A spokesperson from the UK’s foreign office said:

We are supporting the family of a British national who died in Ukraine, and are in contact with the local authorities.

'Don’t Play With Us.' Estonia Sends Message To Russia With Ukraine Aid

This fear has loomed over the nations of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania since the invasion began nearly a year ago. The former Soviet-bloc states have been the target of Moscow’s meddling for years. Now the war in Ukraine has given these small countries an opportunity to punch back. Relative to its size, no nation has been more aggressive in helping Ukraine than Estonia. The small Baltic state has provided Ukraine with nearly $396 million in aid—about half of its defense budget and more than 1% of its gross domestic product. The donations place Estonia, which has just 7,000 active-duty soldiers in its military, among the world leaders. While European giants like Germany had to be coaxed into delivering modern battle tanks to Kyiv, Estonia has handed over whatever it could: anti-tank missiles, howitzers, grenade-launchers, mortars, ammunition, vehicles, communication devices, helmets, body armor, and military food rations. The nation of 1.3 million has taken in more than 60,000 refugees from Ukraine, a higher percentage than any other nation in the European Union.

One Year Into War, Putin Is Crafting the Russia He Craves

The grievance, paranoia and imperialist mind-set that drove President Vladimir V. Putin to invade Ukraine have seeped deep into Russian life after a year of war — a broad, if uneven, societal upheaval that has left the Russian leader more dominant than ever at home. Schoolchildren collect empty cans to make candles for soldiers in the trenches, while learning in a new weekly class that the Russian military has always liberated humanity from “aggressors who seek world domination.”

How the World Changed in the Year Since Russia’s Invasion of Ukraine

“There are decades where nothing happens,” the Bolshevik revolutionary Vladimir Lenin is thought to have said, “and there are weeks where decades happen.” While the veracity of the quote is in doubt, its premise couldn’t be more true when it comes to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. In the year since Russian President Vladimir Putin set his so-called “special military operation” into motion, the world has been altered profoundly—in some ways, perhaps, irrevocably. The Feb. 24, 2022 invasion has sparked a new sense of purpose within Europe and the wider U.S.-led Western military alliance. It has upended the world economy and forced a new energy reality in Europe. It has spurred the largest and fastest displacement of people in decades. It has even begun to influence the geopolitical thinking around events that have not yet occurred.

The group of eastern European states, known as the Bucharest Nine, reiterated their condemnation of Russia's invasion of Ukraine nearly a year since its start.
