Russia blames Ukraine for car bombing that injured pro-Putin novelist Zakhar Prilepin, killed driver

Russia's top investigative agency on Saturday said the suspect in a car bombing that injured a prominent pro-Kremlin novelist and killed his driver has admitted acting at the behest of Ukraine's special services. The blast that hit the car of Zakhar Prilepin, a well-known nationalist writer and an ardent supporter of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, was the third explosion involving prominent pro-Kremlin figures since the start of the conflict. It took place in the region of Nizhny Novgorod, about 250 miles east of Moscow. Prilepin was hospitalized with broken bones, bruised lungs and other injuries; the regional governor said he had been put into a "medical sleep," but did not elaborate.

An ominous policy change is a sign Russia is preparing for a long, bloody war in Ukraine

  • Recent changes to Russian conscription law indicate Moscow is preparing for a long war in Ukraine.
  • The changes make it easier to call up new troops and harder for Russians to avoid those call-ups.
  • Beyond a need for manpower, the changes may reflect the Kremlin's embrace of more heavy-handed rule.

The Kremlin expected a short war and a quick victory when it ordered Russian forces to invade Ukraine in February 2022. But Russian leaders appear to preparing for a long and bloody fight, judging by a series of new measures related to military conscription. "Russia is taking, step by step, the necessary legal mechanisms that they need to do to transition the economy and transition the country to something that approaches, potentially, a wartime footing," Dara Massicot, an expert on the Russian military at the RAND Corporation think tank, said during an event hosted by Georgetown University in April.

It looks like a lot of HIMARs and M777s are operating in Bakhmut which would suggest the attack on the south is not going to start soon. I would expect both the HIMARs and the M777s to move south before the offensive takes place.

Ukraine war live updates: Zelenskyy says Russia intensifying attacks out of frustration; Moscow holds Victory Day military parade

All eyes are on Russia’s Victory Day parade on Tuesday, an annual event marking the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany in 1945. Moscow usually uses the high-profile event in Moscow to show off its military hardware, parading massive missile launchers, battle tanks and troops through Red Square as Russian President Vladimir Putin and military generals look on. Russia has launched a wave of attacks on Ukrainian cities Kyiv, Odesa and Kherson in the last few days and Kyiv was targeted with more strikes overnu. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said Russia is intensifying its attacks out of frustration that several Ukrainian cities have not fallen to Russian troops and the Kremlin needs to “sell” results to its society.

Head of Russian mercenary group warns Bakhmut may fall to Ukraine: Live updates

Whether it's mere rabble-rousing or a genuine warning, Yevgeny Prigozhin is making lots of noise about Russia's standing in the war with Ukraine and especially the battle over Bakhmut. The head of the Wagner private military company has in recent days threatened to pull his fighters from the fiercely contested eastern city, claimed he was threatened with being branded a traitor if he did so, and now says his forces may lose Bakhmut even though Ukraine only occupies 5% of it.

Why Ukraine's Storm Shadow Missiles Will Terrify Russia

Long-range missiles supplied to Ukraine's armed forces will present tough new challenges for Russian defenses, Newsweek has been told. On Thursday, British Defense Secretary, Ben Wallace, told U.K. lawmakers that long-range Storm Shadow cruise missiles "are now going into, or are in, the country itself." He did not confirm how many missiles in total would be sent to Ukraine. Ukraine has repeatedly asked for long-range strike capabilities, but Kyiv's Western supporters have been reluctant to supply weapons that could be seen as escalatory or offer the ability for Ukraine to strike within Russian territory. However, Ukraine has insisted it would not use such capabilities to attack targets inside Russia's borders. Ukrainian Defense Minister, Oleksii Reznikov, said in early February that "we will not use weapons supplied by foreign partners to fire on Russian territory." With the informational resources Ukraine has access to—in part provided by the West—it is "highly likely that Ukrainian commanders will have excellent information on where to target their new missiles for maximum effect," said military expert David Hamblin g

Sadly, the export version only has 250km of range. The UK downgrades range on export models (as well as downgrades guidance control) in order to give UK and NATO users an edge.

Ukraine war live updates: Russia denies reports of Ukrainian breakthrough in front line

The Russian Defense Ministry has denied reports that Ukrainian forces have breached the front lines, claiming the military situation remains under control amid speculation of Kyiv’s anticipated counteroffensive. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy earlier on Thursday said that his nation requires more time and foreign military aid before such a measure — while Yevgeny Prigozhin, leader of Russian private military company Wagner Group, said that Ukraine had already begun such a counterattack and were approaching the embattled city of Bakhmut from the flanks. The White House raised concerns following reports that Russian President Vladimir Putin was receiving weapons for his war in Ukraine from South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.

US unlikely to sanction South Africa in Russia weapons dispute, Bloomberg News reports

South African Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana said his country had resolved a dispute with the U.S. over allegations that Pretoria supplied weapons to Russia, and South Africa is unlikely to face U.S. repercussions, Bloomberg News reported Godongwana said in an interview on Sunday.

“A number of actions were taken in order to ensure that our relationship with the US remains and that relationship should be normal and cordial,” the minister told Bloomberg in an interview in Cape Town on Sunday. “The Americans are not likely to respond with any anger tomorrow.”

The U.S. envoy to South Africa said last week he was confident that a Russian ship had picked up weapons in South Africa in December, in a possible breach of Pretoria's declared neutrality in the Ukraine conflict.

A South African minister responsible for arms control and a foreign ministry spokesman said on Friday that South Africa had not approved any arms shipment to Russia in December.

Russia's Nuclear Strategy Has Been Torn to Pieces

Ukraine says it shot down six Kinzhal missiles over Kyiv fired by Russia, demonstrating the effectiveness of Western air defenses and potentially changing the calculus over what kind of nuclear risk Moscow poses in the war it started. The six Kh-47 missiles launched from MiG-31K aircraft were among a volley of 18 missiles Russia fired at Ukraine overnight. Three cruise missiles were fired from land, and a further nine Kalibr cruise missiles were launched from the Black Sea.
"This has devastating consequences for the credibility of the Russian army and of Russian technology," he told Newsweek. "Normally an air defense should be oversaturated during these attacks." "We know now that the Ukrainians, with the help of Western equipment, are capable of fighting back the most severe Russian attack with the most modern Russian weapon the Russians have ever used against Ukraine."

Ukraine and Russia Renew a Deal to Allow Ukraine to Ship Grain

Ukraine and Russia agreed Wednesday to a two-month extension of a wartime deal that allows Ukraine to ship its grain across the Black Sea, a rare example of cooperation between the two countries. The agreement was scheduled to expire on Thursday. While both sides expressed ongoing grievances over the issue of exports, reaching agreement appeared to offer advantages for governments in both Kyiv and Moscow, as well as for President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey, who acted as broker along with the United Nations. Grain exports are important for Ukraine’s economy and their resumption also helps maintain the stability of global food prices, which rose sharply during the first months of war, as grain intended for export piled up in Ukrainian ports and warehouses. The resulting shortages and price increases raised the threat of famine in parts of the Middle East and Africa.

As Russia Tries to Pummel Kyiv, a Blast in Crimea Hints at Ukraine’s Reach

Ukraine’s air defenses shot down dozens of Russian missiles in the skies above Kyiv early Thursday, casting flaming debris over the Ukrainian capital on the same day that an explosion derailed a Russian freight train in Crimea, the latest in a series of blasts in Russian-occupied territory. Russia’s railway operator said that “unauthorized persons” were behind the derailment, suggesting an act of sabotage. The Ukrainian authorities, who often do not confirm or deny responsibility for incidents in Crimea or Russia, did not claim any role in the derailment.

Russia's Improved Combat Is Bad News for Ukraine: Report

Russia's military has learned from past battlefield mistakes and is now a more challenging opponent, according to a report released Friday by the London-based think tank Royal United Services Institute (RUSI). As a result, the report's authors, Jack Watling and Nick Reynolds, wrote that Ukraine will now "face major tactical challenges" in its upcoming counteroffensive against Russian forces.Throughout much of the military campaign that Russian President Vladimir Putin launched nearly 15 months ago, Russia's forces have not lived up to the expectations placed on it by the media and military analysts. Not only was Russia not able to secure the quick victory over Ukraine that observers had predicted, but its military has suffered numerous battlefield losses without securing many decisive victories.

‘Exhaust them’: Why Ukraine has fought Russia for every inch of Bakhmut, despite high cost

The nine-month battle for Bakhmut has destroyed the 400-year-old city in eastern Ukraine and killed tens of thousands of people in a mutually devastating demonstration of Ukraine’s strategy of exhausting the Russian military. The fog of war made it impossible to confirm the situation on the ground Sunday in the invasion’s longest battle: Russia’s defense ministry reported that the Wagner private army backed by Russian troops had seized the city. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, meanwhile, said Bakhmut was not being occupied by Russian forces.

Russia claims it captured Bakhmut, making comparisons to Berlin in 1945

Russian TV went into a full frenzy of celebration as it reported Moscow’s capture of the Ukrainian city of Bakhmut. There were comparisons to the Red Army liberating Berlin in 1945, congratulations relayed from President Vladimir Putin and announcers emphasizing the victory by using the city’s nearly century-old Soviet name of Artyomovsk. “The myth that Artyomovsk is an unassailable fortress has been crushed,” an anchor said Sunday night on Channel One, Russia’s most popular state broadcaster. “Those are historic events.” A report from the smoldering city in eastern Ukraine followed, showing Russian fighters yelling “Victory!” and placing two flags — the Russian tricolor and the black flag of the private military contractor Wagner — atop a tall, partly destroyed building. The flags were mounted “so that everyone could see them,” the correspondent said, even though the bombed-out, deserted 400-year-old city looks like a ghost of itself after the longest and bloodiest battle of the war.
