Russia targets Ukraine’s farm storage sites after days of hitting Black Sea port facilities

Russia followed its withdrawal from a grain export deal by expanding its attacks from port infrastructure o farm storage buildings in Ukraine’s Odesa region on Friday, while also practicing a Black Sea blockade. Other Russian missiles damaged what officials described only as an “important infrastructure t0 facility” southwest of the port city of Odesa, in what appeared to be an effort to cripple Ukraine’s food exports. Attacks in recent days have put Odesa in Russia’s crosshairs after Moscow abandoned a wartime deal that allowed Ukraine to send grain through the key Black Sea port. In the attack on the storage site, two low-flying cruise missiles started a blaze, then another struck during firefighting efforts, regional Gov. Oleh Kiper said. The barrage injured two people, damaged equipment and destroyed 100 metric tons of peas and 20 metric tons of barley, Kiper said. Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Vershinin clarified the Defense Ministry’s announcement earlier this week that Moscow has declared wide areas in the Black Sea dangerous for shipping. The ministry said it would consider incoming vessels as laden with weapons and treat the country of its flag a participant in the conflict on the Ukrainian side.

Ukraine war: Missile strikes residential building in Dnipro

Aftermath of a Russian missile attack in Dnipro

A BBC team on the ground confirmed the top floor of a large residential tower block was almost completely destroyed in the strike on Friday evening. A building belonging to Ukraine's security services (SBU) was also hit, according president Volodymyr Zelensky. He blamed "Russian missile terror" for the damage to the buildings. Mr Zelensky posted a video on Telegram showing smoke rising from damaged buildings and a fire at street level. He said he had convened emergency meetings with the SBU, interior ministry, emergency services and local officials following the incident. Regional Governor Serhiy Lysak said that two children, aged 14 and 17, were among the injured. He added that they were being treated at home. No fatalities have been reported following the strike, which happened at 20:30 (17:30 GMT) according to Mr Lysak. The latest strike marked the third time the SBU building had been targeted by Russia, according to Dnipro Mayor Borys Filatov. Both buildings were largely empty, he said, adding that the residential building had recently been completed and units were being put up for sale. Moscow said 15 people were hurt by debris falling in the southern port city of Taganrog. The Russian defence ministry said the first S-200 missile was aimed at "residential infrastructure" in the city of around 250,000 people. Shortly after, it said it downed a second S-200 missile near the city of Azov, with debris falling in an unpopulated area.

Poland will increase soldiers at border after Belarusian helicopters allegedly violated airspace, officials say

Poland will increase the number of soldiers along its border with Belarus after two Belarusian helicopters allegedly violated the Polish airspace on Tuesday, according to the defense ministry. In a statement Tuesday, the ministry said the Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak convened a meeting of Poland’s Committee on National Security and Defence Affairs after reports that the Polish airspace was violated earlier on Tuesday. Poland has informed NATO of the incident and moved to summon the Belarusian chargé d’affaires to the Polish foreign ministry to “explain the incident,” according to the statement. “As a reminder, Russia and Belarus have recently stepped up hybrid actions against Poland,” the defense ministry stressed. Poland has been on high alert in recent weeks following the move of soldiers from the mercenary Wagner to Belarus. Last weekend, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki warned that the situation along the Belarusian border is “becoming even more dangerous,” warning Wagner fighters are moving closer.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has ripped façade off anti-imperialism

The final communique of the summit between the European Union and CELAC, the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States, didn’t condemn Russia. Instead, it blandly expressed“ concern” regarding the war, in keeping with a curious phenomenon plaguing the so-called Global South. What has happened to their vaunted disdain for imperialism, the one they proclaimed on city wallas and fulminated against in the streets ? Despite decades of decrying the evils of imperialism and colonialism, the leaders of Latin America and Africa, now confronted with Russia’s brazen effort to grab Ukraine — a move of naked modern-day imperialism — suddenly seem confounded by what they see and ambivalent about how to respond. And the passionate pleas by Boric, the bearded 37-year-old president, are proving to be the exception. Just consider the contrast with another leftist leader, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, a veteran populist who reserved his harshest words regarding the invasion for Ukraine’s supporters, calling NATO's policy “immoral.” Many African leaders, too, have opted to keep a neutral stance, or even help Russia in the conflict. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, it seems, has ripped the façade off anti-imperialism in some developing countries, revealing the underlying hypocrisy that tried to dress anti-Americanism and anti-Westernism in an elegant, high-minded and seemingly coherent ideology.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has ripped façade off anti-imperialism

It was a stunning moment, but it should have been unremarkable: Gabriel Boric, the leftist president of Chile, calling Russia’s invasion of Ukraine a “war of imperial aggression,” pleading with his Latin American and Caribbean counterparts to recognize the fact. In the end, Boric failed. Ukraine Starts New Diplomatic Push to Weaken Russia

Ukraine made a renewed push this weekend at a gathering in Saudi Arabia to win the support of dozens of countries that have remained on the sidelines of the war — the start of a broader campaign in the months ahead to build the diplomatic muscle to isolate and weaken Russia. Ukraine and Saudi Arabia invited diplomats from some 40 governments to talks in the Red Sea port of Jeddah on Saturday. In addition to the United States and European countries, notable attendees included China, India, Brazil, South Africa and some of the oil-rich Gulf nations that have tried to maintain good relations with both Ukraine and Russia throughout the war, which began in February 2022. Many of the countries that have declared their neutrality appear unlikely to shift their stances, though, and some reject the very concept of choosing sides, framing the war as a contest between superpowers that they want no part in. “This is not only a conflict between Russia and Ukraine,” Celso Amorim, international affairs adviser to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of Brazil, said in a speech that he delivered virtually during the talks. “This is also a chapter in the longstanding rivalry between Russia and the West,” he said, according to a copy of the speech obtained by The New York Times. The annual United Nations General Assembly session in September will offer another opportunity for Ukraine to make its case. And the country is also planning a summit later in the fall to shore up backing for its 10-point peace formula in the hopes that it will form the backbone of any future settlement.

Ukraine Says Saudi Talks Were 'Breakthrough', Kyiv Has More to Offer Africa Than Russia

Saudi-hosted talks last weekend were a "breakthrough" for Kyiv that showed it is possible to rally global support around the 10-point plan proposed by President Volodymyr Zelenskiy to end Russia's war, Ukraine's foreign minister said on Thursday. Officials from more than 40 countries - including China, India, Brazil, the United States, and European countries, but not Russia - took part in the talks, which were seen as an attempt by Kyiv to build a broader coalition of powers to support its vision of peace. Ukraine has had strong support from the West as it has fended off Russia's invasion, but it has been harder to win over major Global South economies. Russia has said it is open to peace talks with Kyiv but insists on its claim to four Ukrainian provinces it said it annexed last year and fully or partly controls, as well as Crimea that it annexed in 2014 - a condition Kyiv will not accept.

This is an interesting new development out of the UK. Basically, in order to fill a shortage of mobile tactile SAM systems with medium range the UK quickly produced a new system which is a mash up of already existing parts. This new AA/SAM system is far cheaper than Patriots, far longer range than MPADS, and as it is mounted on a truck chassis it is actually portable unlike Ukraine's old Soviet designs.

It is great to see this kind of quick development of new systems using proven components and systems being developed in just weeks. I wonder if the U.S. defense companies could do stuff like this or if they are just not nimble enough?

An excellent explanation as to why Russia isn't going to stop after taking Ukraine. It all comes down to geography and demographics.

BTW this video is from April of 2022 so it is a little old.

Russia-Ukraine war at a glance: what we know on day 539 of the invasion

  • Three people were killed, several people were wounded and buildings were damaged in a large=sca;e air=attack on Ukraine's western region of Lviv and the north-western region of Volyn. “Many missiles were shot down, but there were also hits in Lviv,” city mayor Andriy Sadovyi said, adding that orders were given to evacuate at least one burning apartment building. The barrage came just hours before top Russian military officials and their counterparts from allied countries in Asia, the Middle East and Africa gathered outside Moscow for a security conference.
  • The Bank of Russia raised its key rate 12% to 8%. The statement announcing the increase did not mention the rouble, which dropped to its lowest level in nearly 17 months on Monday. The Russian currency was boosted by the central bank’s move.
  • Russia fined social media site Reddit for the first time for not deleting “banned content” that it said contained “fake” information about Russia’s military campaign in Ukraine, RIA reported, citing a Moscow court. Reddit joins a list of sites under scrutiny in Russia for failing to remove content that Moscow deems illegal, including Wikimedia, streaming service Twitch, and Google.
  • Three Bulgarian nationals suspected of spying for Russia while living in the UK have been arrested and charged, police have said. The defendants were among five people detained in Febuary after a long-running counter-terrorism investigation. Three of those were then charged with possession of false identity documents, according to the Metropolitan police, which is responsible for espionage cases.
  • Andriy Yermak, head of the office of the president of Ukraine, said Russian athletes should be banned from participating in international competitions after Russian strikes destroyed a sports facility in Dnipro. Kira Rudik, a Ukrainian MP and the leader of the liberal Golos party, also said Ukraine will boycott the Olympic Games if Russia and Belarus participate in the competition.
  • Mali’s military leader Assimi Goita said on Tuesday that he had spoken on the phone to the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, about the coup in Niger. Putin “stressed the importance of a peaceful resolution of the situation for a more stable Sahel,” Mali’s interim president, Assimi Goita, said on Twitter. The Kremlin said the call was initiated by Mali. The statement added: “The parties specifically focused on the current situation in the Sahara-Sahel region and emphasised, in particular, the importance of settling the situation in the Republic of Niger solely through peaceful political and diplomatic means.”

Nato official apologises over suggestion Ukraine could give up land for membership

A senior Nato official has apologised and clarified his comments a day after he said publicly that Ukraine could give up territory to Russia in exchange for Nato membership and an end to the war. Stian Jenssen, the chief of staff to the Nato secretary general, Jens Stoltenberg, told a Norwegian newspaper that he should not have spoken as simplistically as he did, after his initial comments prompted an angry reaction from Kyiv. At a panel event in Norway on Tuesday, Jenssen had said that while any peace deal reached would have to be acceptable to Ukraine, alliance members were discussing how the 18-month war might be brought to an end. “I think that a solution could be for Ukraine to give up territory and get Nato membership in return,” Jenssen told his audience, noting that discussions about Ukraine’s postwar status were continuing in diplomatic circles. “Precisely for this reason, it is crucially important that we support the Ukrainians with what they need,” the official continued as he sought to emphasise that Nato members remained behind Ukraine. Ukraine has consistently called for a restoration of its internationally recognised pre-2014 borders and is engaged in a counteroffensive in an attempt to recapture large parts of its territory seized by Russia.
