WWE SummerSlam 2024 results: Reigns returns, helps Rhodes retain title vs. Sikoa

Cody Rhodes retained his Universal WWE Championship over Solo Sikoa on Saturday night in Cleveland, but the biggest moment of the night belonged to Roman Reigns. Reigns, the former Universal champion, returned from four months off to handle some business with Sikoa, as the "Original Tribal Chief" delivered a Superman Punch and spear to his cousin to hand the victory to Rhodes. What does this mean for The Bloodline? Is Reigns all the way back? We'll have to find out in the coming weeks following Saturday's festivities. Five other titles were up for grabs in Cleveland Stadium, and four of them changed hands. Here's everything that went down on the seven-match fight card in the 2024 edition of SummerSlam.

WWE Hall of Famer Sika Anoa'i, father of Roman Reigns, dies at

WWE Hall of Famer Sika Anoa'i, the father of pro wrestling's top star, Roman Reigns, has died, the organization announced Tuesday. Anoa'i was 79. Anoa'i was a three-time WWE tag-team champion as one-half of The Wild Samoans alongside his brother, Afa. They were inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2007. Following their in-ring career, the tag team trained wrestlers -- including Batista -- at The Wild Samoan Training Facility. They also trained their nephew, WWE Hall of Famer Yokozuna. Anoa'i's family tree is among the greatest in wrestling history. WWE's long-running "Bloodline" storyline features Reigns as the leader of a faction comprised of Samoans who are family members and longtime family friends. The Rock entered the "Bloodline" program in February ahead of a WrestleMania 40 tag-team main event in April alongside his close family friend, Reigns. "My father had a profound impact on my entire family and we are forever grateful for the foundation he built for us," Reigns posted Tuesday on X. "There's no way to fill the void left by his passing but my sisters and I will do our best to represent him and his legacy." Reigns hasn't appeared on WWE television since WrestleMania 40 in April, when he lost the WWE undisputed championship to Cody Rhodes. That ended Reigns' 1,316-day title reign, fourth longest in WWE history.

Afa Anoa'i, part of WWE Hall of Fame tag team, dies at age 81

Afa Anoa'i, the WWE Hall of Famer best known for being one-half of the Wild Samoans pro wrestling tag team, has died at 81. His death was announced by his family Friday, two months after his younger brother and tag team partner, Sika, died in June. Afa is the uncle of WWE superstar Roman Reigns. According to the Wrestling Observer, Afa had been recently admitted into hospice care and experienced two heart attacks while battling pneumonia in January. WWE paid tribute to Afa on Friday, observing a moment of silence during "Friday Night Smackdown."

Afa and Sika were a prominent tag team in WWE (then WWF) during the early 1980s and were three-time WWF tag team champions. They worked in a number of promotions, including the NWA, Mid-South Wrestling, Georgia Championship Wrestling and the AWA, winning 20 tag team championships around the world. The Wild Samoans were inducted in the WWE Hall of Fame in 2007. Afa and Sika last appeared in WWE at the "Hell in a Cell" premium live event in 2020 to celebrate Roman Reigns' victory over Jey Uso.

WWE Saturday Night's Main Event: Promotion brings back show for primetime special in December

WWE Saturday Night's Main Event is coming back to primetime television. The professional wrestling series, which has aired intermittently since 1985, returns to broadcast for the first time since 2008 on Dec. 14 at 8 p.m. ET. WWE announced Saturday Night's Main Event's revival on Tuesday. It's the first quarterly primetime special airing on NBC and Peacock. The pro wrestling promotion will air four primetime specials annually as part of WWE's new five-year domestic media rights partnership with NBCUniversal, which began last Friday when SmackDown aired on USA Network. The Dec. 14 card takes place at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Long Island, New York, the site of the inaugural Saturday Night's Main Event.

Saturday Night's Main Event first aired on NBC between 1985 and 1991 before moving to Fox in 1992. It was revived between 2006 and 2008 on NBC, and was most recently used for non-televised house shows on Saturdays. The March 14, 1987 episode of Saturday Night's Main Event on NBC remains the highest rating any show has done in that time slot. A battle royal featuring Hulk Hogan and Andre the Giant, preceding their legendary encounter at WrestleMania III, drew an 11.6 rating. Saturday Night's Main Event 1985 premiere was headlined by Hogan vs. "Cowboy" Bob Orton -- Randy Orton's father -- for the WWF world heavyweight championship. Hogan headlined the first 10 Saturday Night's Main Events cards.

“Knowing how much he had subverted expectations, knowing how much he didn’t just want to be a Rhodes. He wanted to be his own thing and what he did in the lengths he went to to do it, I was very proud of Dustin throughout that whole run," Cody said of his brother. "Goldust is an underrated part of the Attitude Era, certainly somebody I think worthy of the Hall of Fame.”
