WWE SmackDown results, recap, grades: Drew McIntyre outlasts Sheamus in grueling, gripping match

July 29

Drew McIntyre outlasted Sheamus in a war of attrition on WWE SmackDown. McIntyre will now challenge the undisputed WWE universal champion -- most likely Roman Reigns, Brock Lesnar or Theory at Clash at the Castle in September. McIntyre and Sheamus made the most of their half-hour slot on Friday's iteration of the blue brand. The longtime colleagues fought tooth and nail in a lawless "Irish Donnybrook" match. McIntyre will now challenge for the WWE's top prize at the promotion's first major U.K. stadium show in 30 years. Elsewhere on the card, Ronda Rousey found an edge over SmackDown women's champion Liv Morgan ahead of their SummerSlam rematch. And Theory continued to loom over Reigns vs. Lesnar with his Money in the Bank briefcase.

WWE SmackDown results, recap, grades: Tensions heighten within The Bloodline ahead of Extreme Rules

Roman Reigns provided Sami Zayn a big opportunity to move up The Bloodline ladder on Friday's edition of WWE SmackDown as the Tribal Chief came face-to-face with Logan Paul. In the end, however, it was Zayn and Jey Uso who were the show's real stars. Reigns had enough of Jey's attitude. Following an encounter with Paul ahead of WWE Crown Jewel, Reigns assigned Zayn with the responsibility of dealing with his cousin's temperamental attitude. Zayn, who was officially welcomed into The Bloodline two weeks ago, now finds himself bearing more and more responsibility as a member of the group. The Extreme Rules go-home episode of SmackDown also featured an intercontinental championship match pitting GUNTHER vs. Sheamus -- a sequel to their hard-hitting encounter at Clash at the Castle last month. WWE SmackDown results, recap, grades: Logan Paul lands a lucky punch ahead of Crown Jewel

All it takes is one. That is the narrative WWE painted on SmackDown in the lead up to Roman Reigns vs. Logan Paul at WWE Crown Jewel. Paul got a mental edge over his foes on Friday night as friction continues to seep into The Bloodline. Roman Reigns wanted nothing to do with Paul on SmackDown. That is according to Sami Zayn, who informed his fellow faction members that no one was to interact with Paul on Friday's show. The undisputed WWE universal champion had no interest in giving Paul any encouragement or reason to believe that he had a shot at defeating Reigns at Crown Jewel. Unfortunately, tempers got the better of The Bloodline and put the ball firmly in Paul's court. SmackDown also hosted an ominous warning from Bray Wyatt, a women's tag team championship title defense, updated matches for Crown Jewel and much more.

WWE SmackDown results: Live recap, grades as Gunther and Rey Mysterio fight for intercontinental title

A modern-day David vs. Goliath anchors WWE SmackDown as Rey Mysterio tries to overcome the mountain of a man named Gunther. The legendary luchador looks to add the intercontinental championship to his crowded trophy case on Friday night. This week's SmackDown kicks off at 8 p.m. ET and was pre-taped from Enterprise Center in St Louis, Missouri. Mysterio, desperate to get away from The Judgement Day and his estranged son Dominik Mysterio, made the transition from Raw to SmackDown in October. A successful outing in a fatal four-way No. 1 contender's match rewarded Mysterio with a shot at the Imperium boss. Gunther and his right-hand men, Ludwig Kaiser and Giovanni Vinci, have bullied Mysterio in the weeks leading to their intercontinental title match. Will Mysterio's speed and experience edge close the 122-pound and 10-inch height gap between them? Two additional matches are being promoted in anticipation of Friday's show: the unhinged Liv Morgan vs. Sonya Deville and Ricochet vs. the rechristened LA Knight. The show was filmed immediately after last week's episode of SmackDown to allow superstars to make the trek to Saudi Arabia for Crown Jewel this weekend.
