XFL cancels regular-season games, 'committed' to playing in 2021
The XFL canceled its regular season Thursday amid the spread of the coronavirus.
The move followed similar cancellations and postponements by the NBA, NHL, NCAA, MLS and Major League Baseball, among others. In its first season since its aborted debut in 2001, the XFL completed half of its scheduled 10-week season. It had been slated to conclude April 12 before two weeks of postseason play. There was no immediate word Thursday about a potential attempt to conduct playoffs. The XFL has given its players approval to sign with NFL teams any time after they pass exit physicals Friday, sources told ESPN's Kevin Seifert. Originally, XFL contacts said players could not sign with NFL until after the XFL playoffs. Despite the cancellation, the league said all players will be paid their base pay and benefits for the regular season, while ticket holders will receive refunds or credit toward future games.
Games drew an average attendance of 18,614 fans, garnering the largest crowds in St. Louis (28,541) and Seattle (25,616), while New York (14,875) and Los Angeles (13,124) found more difficulty attracting fans. Overall, ABC and ESPN networks averaged 2,084,000 viewers per game in Weeks 1-4. Fox networks have averaged 2,019,000 per game. According to the league, all 10 of its broadcast games during that period ranked among television's top 10 shows that week, as did four of the six on cable. The XFL is owned by Vince McMahon, who also runs the WWE. The wrestling company announced earlier Thursday that it would "remain committed" to holding WrestleMania 36 on April 5 at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida.

The XFL is a professional American football league owned by Vince McMahon's Alpha Entertainment, and is headquartered in Stanford, Connecticut. It is the successor to the original XFL, which was controlled by McMahon's World Wrestling Federation (WWF, now WWE) and NBC, and ran for a single season in 2001. The league follows a similar structure as the original XFL did in 2001, with eight teams, centrally owned and operated by the league (as opposed to the franchise model, with each team having different ownership groups) and spread across the United States in markets currently or recently represented by a National Football League (NFL) franchise, competing in a season and a two-week postseason in the winter and spring months, after the Super Bowl. In announcing the reformed XFL, McMahon stated that while it would share its name and trademark with the previous incarnation, it would not rely on professional wrestling-inspired features and entertainment elements as its predecessor did, instead aiming to create a league with fewer off-field controversies and faster, simpler play compared to the NFL.

XFL 2020 Midseason Awards: Here are our MVPs, Coach of the Year and All-XFL team at the halfway point
The front half of the XFL's inaugural season is officially in the books -- five games down, five to go with the playoffs arriving in April. The season hasn't disappointed. Houston is must-see TV at 5-0 with the (spoiler alert!) leader for league MVP, quarterback P.J. Walker. Elsewhere, three teams sit at 3-2 atop the East. That race will be fascinating to watch over the next month. As we look ahead to the final five games, let's take a moment and hand out superlatives for the XFL's Offensive and Defensive MVPs, as well as the Coach of the Year, for the first half. We also have our Midseason All-XFL team. Keep in mind that with such a limited sample size and data pool, there will be players selected who have either had an "off" game or two, or have been sidelined with injuries. End-of-season awards will be much easier to compile. Still, these are players who have at least shown flashes of greatness and are worthy of being recognized.

Donaid Parham Jr, who led XFL tight ends in yards and receptions, has signed a multiyear contract with the Los Angeles Chargers, the team said Tuesday. Parham had 24 receptions for 307 yards and four touchdowns for the Dallas Renegades before the XFL season ended due to the coronavirus pandemic. He was the only tight end in the league to have a 100-yard receiving game. Parham spent time with the Detroit Lions and Washington Redskins during the offseason last year.

The XFL's parent company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy Monday, the first business day after the league suspended operations and laid off almost all of its employees. The filing, officially made by Alpha Entertainment, listed the XFL with assets and liabilities each in the range of $10 million to $50 million. The largest creditor was listed as the St. Louis Sports Commission at $1.6 million. Seven of the league's eight coaches also are among the top creditors. In a statement, the XFL attributed its decision to the coronavirus pandemic: "The XFL quickly captured the hearts and imaginations of millions of people who love football. Unfortunately, as a new enterprise, we were not insulated from the harsh economic impacts and uncertainties caused by the COVID-19 crisis. Accordingly, we have filed a voluntary petition for relief under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code. This is a heartbreaking time for many, including our passionate fans, players and staff, and we are thankful to them, our television partners, and the many Americans who rallied to the XFL for the love of football."

Former XFL commissioner Oliver Luck sues Vince McMahon for wrongful termination
When Vince McMahon rebooted the XFL, one of his most important hires was commissioner Oliver Luck. With the XFL shut down because of the COVID-19 pandemic, McMahon finds himself at legal odds with Luck, who is suing his former boss for wrongful termination. In a federal lawsuit filed last week in Connecticut, Luck claims that "Despite fulfilling his obligations as Commissioner and CEO since May 30, 2018, Mr. Luck was wrongfully terminated by Alpha Entertainment LLC ("Alpha"), an affiliate of Defendant, on April 9, 2020. Thus, Alphaas repudiated Mr. Luck's employment agreement. Mr. Luck brings this action for breach of contract and declaratory judgment against McMahon." The XFL laid off practically all its employees on April 10, nearly one month after deciding to cancel the 2020 season six weeks into it. The league then filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy the following week, on April 13. Per Daniel Kaplan of The Athletic, the lawsuit says that Alpha, in its bankruptcy motion, filed to have the court reject "Certain Executive Contracts." In response, Luck's complaint says that he "wholly disputes and rejects the allegations set forth in the Termination Letter and contends they are pretextual and devoid of merit," suggesting Luck was fired with cause.

Vince McMahon says in court filing that he won't try to buy back XFL
XFL owner Vince McMahon said Tuesday in bankruptcy court that he will not attempt to buy back the league. In a court filing, McMahon called accusations that he was secretly maneuvering to use Chapter 11 as an avenue to cheaply retain the XFL "inflammatory" and "unsubstantiated." The XFL filed for bankruptcy on April 13 in Delaware district court, three days after laying off nearly its entire staff, citing the unforeseen impact of the coronavirus pandemic. McMahon then put the league up for sale, but the court's committee of unsecured creditors claimed last week that McMahon had set up a "fire sale" bidding process that would rig the process in a way that would allow him to buy back the XFL without repaying its debts.
