Oldest U.S. horse racing track, Freehold Raceway, closing Dec.28
Horse racing has been conducted at the half-mile track in central New Jersey since the 1830s. Harness racing become the staple when The Monmouth County Agricultural Society was formed late 1853, and it held harness racing the following year at an annual fair at Freehold Raceway.

Freehold Raceway is the third horse racing track in New Jersey to close since 2001. Garden State Park in Cherry Hill, which held thoroughbred and harness racing, closed in 2001 after 58 years of operation.

Supreme Court rejects horse racing anti-doping law challenge
The justices left in place an appeals court ruling that upheld the law and rejected claims that Congress gave too much power to the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority, the private entity that administers the rules. Oklahoma, Louisiana and West Virginia sought to have the law struck down, joined by other racetracks that are not operating under HISA.

Two other cases are pending in federal court, one in the 5th Circuit and another in the 8th Circuit. Both Scheeler and National Thoroughbred Racing Association president and CEO Tom Rooney urged HISA opponents to end their litigation.

Justin Herbert throws 3 TDs to Quentin Johnston; Chargers hammer Panthers 26-3 to remain unbeaten
Herbert finished 14 of 20 for 130 yards and Johnson had five catches for 51 yards. Johnson became the first NFL player since Jamal Lewis in 2003 with three runs of at least 43 yards the first two weeks of the season....Second-year quarterback Bryce Young had another miserable game, finishing 18 of 26 passing for 84 yards with one interception.

Andy Dalton passes for 319 yards 319 Tds to lead Panthers past Raiders 36-22 for first win
Dalton completed 26 of 37 passes and becoming the first NFL quarterback this season to post a 300-yard, three-TD performance. Dalton has thrown for 1,027 yards and 10 TDs in four career starts against the Raiders...gardner Minshew completed 18 of 28 passes for 214 yards with a touchdown and interception. The Las Vegas running game, which entered the game last in the league with a 49-yard average, totaled just 55 yards.

Joe Burrow throws for 2 TDa, Bengals hold on to beat Panthers 34-24 for first victory of the season
Burrow threw for 232 yards and two touchdowns, Chase Brown ran for 80 yards and two scores...Andy Dalton threw for 220 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Chuba Hubbard had another strong game for Carolina, rushing for 104 yards and a touchdown

Williams threw for 304 yards and two touchdowns in his best performance to date, Moore caught both scoring passes and had 105 yards receiving against his former team. Carolina sent Moore and the No. 9 overall pick to Chicago for the top selection in the draft that year....Andy Dalton had a rough outing in his third start. Bryce Young replaced him in the closing minutes and was 4 of 7 for 58 yards and got sacked once.

Young finished 6 of 8 for 70 yards....The Bills rested all of their starters to avoid risking further injury to an already limping team. Darrynton Evans scored Buffalo’s first touchdown of the preseason with an 18-yard catch, Frank Gore Jr. had 101 yards rushing including a 5-yard touchdown run.

Cleveland's QB didn't play during the preseason and the Browns' new-look offense didn't look very good with him running it.

Carr threw for 243 yards and two TDs to go along with a 1-yard sneak for a score. Kamara, had 180 scrimmage yards (115 rushing) and scored four touchdowns.,..Prescott was 27 of 39 for 293 yards

Henry rushes for 151 yards, 2 TDs as Ravens hang on to beat Cowboys 28-25
Henry, who averaged 6 yards on 25 carries, became the first Baltimore back to score at least one touchdown in each of his first three games for the franchise. He added a 23-yard catch. Jackson was 12 of 15 for 182 yards....Brandon Aubrey kicked a 65-yard field goal for the Cowboys, 1 yard shy of the NFL record from 2021 held by the kicker on the other sideline, Baltimore's Justin Tucker.

Prescott had spent the previous three-plus hours mixing brilliant plays and baffling ones in equal measure, throwing a pair of picks and fumbling once to almost single-handedly keep the sluggish Steelers in the game....Fields threw for 131 yards two scores and added 27 yards rushing but struggled with his accuracy, completing just 15 of 27 passes.

Jared Goff throws 3 TD passes, Lions hand Cowboys another lopsided home loss
Goff went on to throw for 315 yards and three touchdowns, David Montgomery ran for two scores. Detroit led 27-6 at the break....Prescott threw two interceptions in the worst home loss since 1988 for the Cowboys (3-3), who became the first team since at least 2000 to trail by 14 or more more points at halftime in four consecutive games on their home field, playoffs included.

Lance, a former No. 3 overall draft pick who is trying to remain on the Cowboys' roster, completed 15 of 23 passes for 151 yards. Cooper Rush played the first quarter and completed 1 of 3 passes for 6 yards...Minshew, O'Connell completed 10 of 21 passes for 95 yards for the Raiders.

Cowboys' Trey Lance throws 5 picks. Chargers' long TDs pace victory over Dallas
Derius Davis ran 70 yards for a touchdown on LA's first play and Simi Fehoko caught a 78-yard scoring pass to start the second quarter. Easton Stick was on the throwing end of Fehoko's long TD, but was just 11 of 28 for 109 yards with an interception.T.Trey Lance ran for a touchdown and threw for a score but another of the five interceptions. It could be Lance’s last extensive action for the Cowboys.
 
College Football Power Ranking: How did the top 25 look in Week 7?
Week 7 has wrapped up as this week's matchups gave us some exciting endings along with Arizona State's upset of No. 16 Utah on Friday. Four of the 17 games with top-25 teams went into overtime as the unranked looked to make it another chaotic weekend.

Jannik Sinner wins in Shanghai, denies Novak Djokovic bid for 100th title​

Top-ranked Jannik Sinner beat Novak Djokovic in straight sets to win the Shanghai Masters on Sunday, giving the Italian his tour-leading seventh title of the season. Sinner bettered the 24-time Grand Slam champion 7-6 (4), 6-3 in 1 hour, 37 minutes and never faced a break point in the outdoor hard-court tournament. Sinner hit eight aces and 22 winners to four and 12, respectively, for Djokovic. Djokovic was aiming for his 100th tour-level title and his fifth in Shanghai. Only Jimmy Connors with 109 titles and Roger Federer with 103 have hit the century mark in men's tennis. Sinner became the first man to win more than six titles in a season since Andy Murray won nine in 2016. He also pulled level in his career record against Djokovic, now at four wins apiece. The 23-year-old Sinner is now 8-2 against top-five opponents on hard courts this year, with both losses coming against Alcaraz, who watched Sunday's final from the stands. The 37-year-old Djokovic was playing in China for the first time in five years.

South Carolina, UConn lead AP preseason women's basketball poll
The Gamecocks received 27 of the 30 first-place votes in the preseason rankings from a national media panel Tuesday. South Carolina returns four starters from the national championship team that went undefeated last year, capping off the historic season over Caitlin Clark and Iowa in the title game.

South Carolina has been No. 1 in the preseason poll four of the past five years. Last season, the Gamecocks started sixth in the preseason before moving up to No. 1 for the remainder of the year. UConn received two first-place votes. The Huskies have been ranked in the top 10 in the preseason poll for 31 straight years
