Oleksandr Usyk detained in Poland; Zelensky aids in release
A source told ESPN that Usyk, a native of Ukraine, was detained after he attempted to board a flight to Valencia, Spain, where he is set to begin preparations for his Dec. 21 heavyweight championship rematch with Tyson Fury in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Usyk, 37, is ESPN's No. 1 pound-for-pound boxer. The Olympic gold medalist defeated Fury in May via decision to become boxing's first undisputed heavyweight champion since 2002.

Anthony Joshua vows to 'break' Daniel Dubois in heavyweight title
Joshua will bid to become a three-time heavyweight world champion, while Dubois will look to keep the IBF belt he was awarded after Oleksandr Usyk vacated it in June.

Texas was No. 1 for the second straight week, receiving 44 of 62 first-place votes as the top four teams remained the same. Georgia held at No. 2 and Ohio State is No. 3, Alabama is No. 4. Tennessee moved up to No. 5.

Attorneys working to address judge's qualms with NCAA settlement​

Attorneys negotiating a $2.78 billion settlement of class-action antitrust cases against the NCAA and the nation's biggest college conferences are working to clarify parts of the agreement that a judge wanted addressed before deciding whether to let the landmark deal move forward. At a hearing two weeks ago, U.S. District Judge Claudia Wilken declined to grant preliminary approval and expressed dismay with a plan to regulate and potentially restrict third-party name, image and likeness payments to athletes from booster-funded organizations called collectives. Memphis, Tulane, USF, UTSA commit to AAC amid Pac-12 interest​

Some of the highest-profile targets of the Pac-12's expansion have rebuffed its interest, as Memphis, Tulane, USF and UTSA publicly committed to stay in the American Athletic Conference on Monday. The schools announced their intentions on social media, which solidifies the AAC in the short term and leaves the six-team Pac-12 in flux as it searches for at least two more members to complete its rebuild. The Pac-12 added Boise State, Fresno State, Colorado State and San Diego State in recent weeks, with the goal to create clear-cut fifth-best football conference. The school is in discussions with Gonzaga as a basketball addition, which sources told ESPN would come with a full revenue share. ESPN is also reporting preliminary discussions with Saint Mary's for the Pac-12. But some of the Pac-12's momentum to become the top football conference outside the Power 4 leagues has stalled, as Memphis loomed as the linchpin of any potential additions.

Mountain West Conference gets commitments from 7 remaining members​

The Mountain West has received signed commitments from its seven remaining member schools to stay in the conference, with all of them agreeing to execute grant of media rights from 2026 to 2032. It also announced plans for how it will distribute money it received in exit fees from the five schools leaving for the Pac-12. Those schools --Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, Utah State and San Diego State-- are on the hook for roughly $18 million each, per the conference bylaws, but negotiations could lead to decreased totals.

Alabama overtakes Texas for No. 1 in AP Top 25; Georgia to No. 5
Alabama returned to No. 1 in The Associated Press college football poll for the first time in two years Sunday following its dizzying victory over Georgia, making this 16 of 17 seasons the Crimson Tide have held the top spot at some point.

Alabama is No. 1 for the 141st time, most of any team since the AP rankings began in 1936, and for the 105th time since 2009 when Nick Saban won the first of his six national championships at the school.

Texas State ends Mountain West talks, stays in Sun Belt​

Texas State's talks with the Mountain West Conference have ended, with the school informing the Sun Belt Conference that it won't be leaving after the Bobcats program received a verbal offer over the weekend. At the time of the Mountain West offer, the Pac-12 had also expressed an interest in the Bobcats program, sources told ESPN's Pete Thamel, though an offer there had not materialized. As a member of the Sun Belt, the exit fee for the Bobcats to make a league change is expected to be $5 million. Texas State has a rising football program that has been in FBS play since 2012. It played one season in the WAC before joining the Sun Belt in 2013. The school played in and won its first bowl game as an FBS member in 2023, as it finished 8-5 under coach G.J. Kinne and defeated Rice 45-21 in the First Responder Bowl. The league's six full members are UNLV, Air Force, Nevada, San Jose State, New Mexico and Wyoming. Hawai'i is in the league as a football member. The Pac-12 needs one additional member, as it currently sits at seven.

NCAA Regional sites for 2027, 2028 basketball tournament revealed
The NCAA is sticking with two regionals for the women's basketball tournament through at least 2028. Las Vegas and Philadelphia will host the two 2027 regionals and Portland, Oregon, and Washington will be the sites for the 2028 Sweet 16. The NCAA switched to a two-region format in 2023.[size]

This is the first time that Las Vegas will host the women's tournament since 1991 and Washington since 1997. Philadelphia will be hosting its first regional since 2011 and fifth overall. Portland hosted regional play last year.

Poll: Colorado's Shedeur Sanders tops 'muddy' race for 1st QB drafted​

Nearly halfway through the college football season, there's still a fascinating race among the sport's top quarterbacks to see who'll be the first one taken in the NFL draft this spring. Heading into Week 6, there are still five quarterbacks who could claim the top spot, making this a particularly "muddy" year, as one veteran scout termed it. Part of that lack of conviction comes from the caliber of the quarterback crop, as it's considered a distinctly lower-quality quarterback class than the record class of six quarterbacks drafted in the top 12 picks last year.

ESPN polled 20 NFL scouts and executives who evaluate college players to see where they stood right now on the top quarterback for the 2025 NFL draft. The variance of answers proved telling, as Colorado's Shedeur got nine votes, Georgia's Carson Beck got five and Alabama's Jalen Milroe got four. Miami's Cam Ward and Texas' Quinn Ewers got one vote each, with Ward rising and Ewers' standing likely hurt after missing the last two weeks with an injury.

Sanders has been productive this year and has shown an affinity for the dramatic, as he led a miraculous comeback at Baylor and has thrown 14 touchdowns and three interceptions. He's No. 6 nationally in passing yards with 1,630. He's playing under longtime NFL offensive coach Pat Shurmur, which has led to an evolution to more of an NFL-style offense. Ward and Milroe can be considered the risers in recent weeks, as two scouts noted that they had Ward second on their current lists.

Vanderbilt takes down No. 1 Alabama 40-35 in historic college football victory​

Vanderbilt (3-2, 1-1 Southeastern Conference) had lost all 60 games against AP top-five teams, according to SportRadar. The Commodores hadn't beaten Alabama on the field in 40 years, but they snapped a 23-game skid making big play after big play to give coach Clark Lea his alma mater's biggest win ever. The Commodores scored the first 13 points and took a 16-point lead that was their largest ever over the No. 1 team in the country. Alabama had just moved to the top of the AP Top 25 after an emotional win over Georgia.

The Tide (4-1, 1-1) helped Vanderbilt (3 -2, 1 - 1) pad that lead with too many mistakes, sloppy play and penalties. Alabama will drop out of the top spot after this loss to the SEC’s perennial cellar dweller. Alabama now is 64-4 against unranked teams as the AP’s top-ranked team. Vanderbilt never trailed as the Commodores played keep-away, holding the ball for just over 42 minutes. Alabama had a 312-252 yardage advantage on offense. It didn’t matter.

Vanderbilt never trailed as the Commodores played keep-away, holding the ball for just over 42 minutes. Alabama had a 312-252 yardage advantage on offense. It didn’t matter. Vanderbilt fans and players started celebrating as Pavia knelt down to run out the clock.

Texas, Ohio State, Oregon atop AP Top 25 after stunners
It was a week of upheaval in the Associated Press college football poll. Texas, which had an open date, received 52 out of 61 first-place votes and became the first team in two years to bounce in and out of the top spot in a span of three polls.

Johnson became the first NFL player since Jamal Lewis in 2003 with three runs of at least 43 yards the first two weeks of the season....Second-year quarterback Bryce Young had another miserable game, finishing 18 of 26 passing for 84 yards with one interception.

Andy Dalton passes for 319 yards 319 Tds to lead Panthers past Raiders 36-22 for first win
Dalton completed 26 of 37 passes and becoming the first NFL quarterback this season to post a 300-yard, three-TD performance. Dalton has thrown for 1,027 yards and 10 TDs in four career starts against the Raiders...gardner Minshew completed 18 of 28 passes for 214 yards with a touchdown and interception. The Las Vegas running game, which entered the game last in the league with a 49-yard average, totaled just 55 yards.

Joe Burrow throws for 2 TDa, Bengals hold on to beat Panthers 34-24 for first victory of the season
Burrow threw for 232 yards and two touchdowns, Chase Brown ran for 80 yards and two scores...Andy Dalton threw for 220 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Chuba Hubbard had another strong game for Carolina, rushing for 104 yards and a touchdown

Williams threw for 304 yards and two touchdowns in his best performance to date, Moore caught both scoring passes and had 105 yards receiving against his former team. Carolina sent Moore and the No. 9 overall pick to Chicago for the top selection in the draft that year....Andy Dalton had a rough outing in his third start. Cowboys' Trey Lance throws 5 picks. Chargers' long TDs pace victory over Dallas
Derius Davis ran 70 yards for a touchdown on LA's first play and Simi Fehoko caught a 78-yard scoring pass to start the second quarter. Easton Stick was on the throwing end of Fehoko's long TD, but was just 11 of 28 for 109 yards with an interception.T.Trey Lance ran for a touchdown and threw for a score but another of the five interceptions. It could be Lance’s last extensive action for the Cowboys.
