Attorney: NCAA antitrust lawsuits settlement to be filed Friday

The full settlement agreement of antitrust lawsuits involving the NCAA and college sports' wealthiest conferences is expected to be filed with a federal court by the end of the week, an attorney for the defendants told The Associated Press on Tuesday. The NCAA, along with the Atlantic Coast Conference, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 and Southeastern Conference, agreed May 23 to the framework of a $2.77 billion settlement of multiple antitrust lawsuits that were challenging limits on college athlete compensation.

Houston Christian University, a Southland Conference school that has been competing in Division I, has already filed a motion to intervene in the settlement. The school claims schools outside the power conferences will unfairly absorb in inordinate amount of the cost of the damages to be paid out over a 10-year period. Schools in the non-power conferences have argued that more than 90% of the damages will be paid out to football and basketball players who have or are competing in conferences that were named in the lawsuit. The NCAA will pay out the damages from operating costs, reserves, insurance and from withheld distributions to Division I conferences.

Lauren Coughlin wins CPKC Women's Open for 1st LPGA Tour title

Lauren Coughlin won the CPKC Women's Open on Sunday for her first LPGA Tour title, pulling away from Haeran Ryu with a two-stroke swing on the par-3 17th. Tied for the lead after Ryu three-putted for bogey on the par-4 16th, Coughlin hit a 6-iron to 8 feet and birdied the 195-yard 17th. Ryu then missed a 3-foot par try to fall two shots back. She finished at 13-under 275, closing with a 1-under 71 for a two-stroke victory over Mao Saigo in mostly calm conditions at Earl Grey Golf Club, with smoke from wildfires again leaving a haze over the course.

Claressa Shields wins heavyweight title with TKO of Vanessa Lepage-Joanisse

Claressa Shields predicted the fight to end early. But not that early. After three knockdowns, Shields captured the vacant WBO light heavyweight title and the WBC heavyweight championship at the 1:09 mark in the second round with a TKO victory over Vanessa Lepage-Joanisse on Saturday night. Shields (15-0, 3 KOs) moved up to capture a world title in a fourth and fifth weight class in front of a star-studded crowd at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit that included legendary boxing champion Thomas "The Hitman" Hearns. Shields dropped Lepage-Joanisse (22-3-1) for the third and final time with an overhand right before the fight was stopped. Shields' speed and power were too much for Lepage-Joanisse, who was making her first WBC title defense. Prior to her latest victory, Shields had won 10 straight by decision. Her last stoppage victory was in August 2017 over Nikki Adler in her fourth professional bout.

Pitbull buys naming rights to FIU football stadium

International recording artist Pitbull has purchased the naming rights to Florida International's football stadium, it was announced Tuesday. The FIU board of trustees voted Tuesday to approve a five-year deal to give the name Pitbull Stadium to what's currently known as FIU Stadium. Pitbull will pay the school $1.2 million per year for five years, according to the documents tied to the vote. The rapper, singer and businessman, whose name is Armando Christian Perez, is also known as "Mr. 305" -- a nod to Miami's area code -- and attended Miami Coral Park High School.

The Miami-based university becomes the first to have a college athletics building named after a musician. Included in the deal is an option for Pitbull to renew the agreement for five additional years. As part of the deal, according to FIU board documents, Pitbull will create an anthem for FIU, post about the school on social media 12 times a year and appear at one athletics fundraising event per year throughout the term of the agreement.

Angelo Leo KO's Luis Alberto Lopez to win featherweight title

Angelo Leo scored a spectacular one-punch knockout of Luis Alberto Lopez in Round 10 to pull off an upset and win the IBF featherweight title Saturday in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Albuquerque's Leo (25-1, 12 KOs) uncorked a left hook that dropped Lopez flat on his back for the count of 10 at 1:16 of the round to become a two-division champion. The clean left hand sent Lopez crashing to the mat as the back of his head bounced off the canvas in a knockout of the year contender. Lopez (30-3, 17 KOs) was transported to UNM Hospital following the KO loss for observation, a Top Rank spokesperson told ESPN. Leo was a +350 underdog, according to ESPN BET. Leo's lone previous defeat was in January 2021, a decision loss to Stephen Fulton in a 122-pound title fight. Leo rebounded with five consecutive victories, most recently an April decision win over Eduardo Baez. Leo outpointed Tramaine Williams in 2020 to win a vacant 122-pound title.

NCAA sued over major-junior hockey player ban

Canadian junior hockey player Rylan Masterson filed a proposed class-action lawsuit against the NCAA and 10 universities on Monday night, alleging the NCAA is violating antitrust laws by preventing any player who has appeared in a major-junior hockey game from also playing in the NCAA. The suit -- filed in the U.S. District Court -- argues the NCAA and U.S. universities are anticompetitive in allowing the rule. The NCAA has deemed any players competing in the Canadian Hockey League -- comprised of the OHL, WHL and QMJHL -- as ineligible for the NCAA because there are players on those teams who have signed professional contracts with NHL teams. NCAA Bylaw 12.2.3.2 states that "an individual shall not be eligible for intercollegiate athletics in a sport if the individual ever competed on a professional team." Masterson, 19, has played his past three seasons for the Ontario Junior Hockey League's Fort Erie Meteors and was named captain in September 2023. In 2022, Masterson appeared in two preseason games with the OHL's Windsor Spitfires; that stint alone was enough to cost him future NCAA eligibility.
