Wimbledon cites rain as reason for first-week attendance drop

The All England Club isn't worried about fans skipping Wimbledon because of England's run in soccer's European Championship. The rain is another story, though. Week 1 attendance was down by 3.7% from last year as rain interrupted play on several days at the grass-court Grand Slam. Friday's attendance was the lowest for a first Friday, excluding the pandemic-restricted 2021 tournament, since 1998. "This year the weather has been so variable and so bad at times that I think at the moment our assessment is it's almost certainly the weather that's impacting [attendance]," Sally Bolton, chief executive of the All England Club, said Monday as the tournament entered its second week.

Court ruling seeks test to decide if athletes are employees

College athletes whose efforts primarily benefit their schools may qualify as employees deserving of pay under federal wage-and-hour laws, a U.S. appeals court ruled Thursday in a setback to the NCAA. The court, in the latest challenge to the NCAA's long-held notion of "amateurism" in college sports, said a test should be developed to differentiate between students who play college sports for fun and those whose effort "crosses the legal line into work."

A colleague, in a concurring opinion, questioned the difficulty of such a process, noting that nearly 200,000 students compete on nearly 6,700 Division I teams. The NCAA had hoped to have the case dismissed, but it will instead go back to the trial judge for fact-finding. The Division I athletes and former athletes behind the suit in Philadelphia are seeking more modest hourly wages similar to those earned by their peers in work-study programs. They argue that colleges are violating fair labor practices by failing to pay them for the time they dedicate to their sports, which they say can average 30 or more hours per week.

NIT, D-2, D-3 finals set around 2026 Indianapolis Final Four

The NCAA will host a men's college basketball soiree in 2026 that will feature multiple title games in the same city, the association announced Thursday. Indianapolis, the host of the 2026 Final Four, will also host the Division II and Division III national title games along with the semifinals and finals of the NIT. It's the second time the NCAA has staged all three national championship games in the same city (Atlanta, 2013). The NIT semifinals will be played at Butler's Hinkle Fieldhouse, and the title game will be held at another unannounced venue. The Division II and Division III national title games in men's basketball will be played at Gainbridge Fieldhouse one day before the Division I championship game, which will take place at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Women's tourney join men in sharing all seeds

The NCAA women's selection committee will release the seeding for the entire tournament field for the first time next season. The NCAA Division I women's basketball committee announced the change Friday after its summer meetings, meaning the full seed list for all 68 teams will be revealed on Selection Sunday as it has been with the men. The first- and second-round games will continue to be hosted by the top 16 seeds on March 19-24, 2025, after the NCAA looked into the possibility of playing neutral-site games like the men. Birmingham, Alabama, and Spokane, Washington, will host eight-team regionals. The committee also announced that championship games for Division I, II and III will be held in Indianapolis in 2028. It will be the third time one city has hosted all three, along with Indianapolis in 2016 and Dallas in 2023. The three men's divisions will also crown champions in Indianapolis in 2026.

Title IX will apply to college athlete revenue share, feds say

An official for the U.S. Department of Education, the federal enforcer of gender equity in sports, said Title IX rules will apply to future revenue dollars that schools share with college athletes, but the department declined to offer guidance on how schools should distribute the money between men and women to comply with the broad language of the law. The NCAA and its power conferences agreed in May to settle a trio of antitrust lawsuits, paving the way for colleges to share up to $20 million in revenue per year with athletes starting in 2025. The details of the settlement, which still must be approved by a judge, will not address how schools should handle Title IX requirements, according to multiple sources involved with crafting the agreement.

Scottie Scheffler betting favorite to win Open Championship

For the fourth and final time this year, Scottie Scheffler is the outright favorite in a major golf tournament, carrying a +500 price into the 152nd Open Championship, according to ESPN BET odds. The feat has Scheffler sharing rarified betting air, yet again, with arguably the greatest golfer of all time. He is the first player to be favored outright in every major of a calendar year since Tiger Woods did so in 2013; Woods accomplished that feat an astounding 12 times in his career. The betting public is backing Scheffler at a healthy clip, attracting a field-leading 9.3% of the bets and 19.6% of the handle at ESPN BET,. BetMGM, DraftKings and FanDuel also reported Scheffler as their tickets and money leader, but his short price dictates that he would need even more handle to give bookmakers a real scare.

CFP leaders happy to see season unfold, then weigh changes

Leaders of the College Football Playoff won't make any decisions about what the sport's postseason format will look like in 2026 and beyond until after a national champion has been crowned in the inaugural season of a 12-team field, executive director Rich Clark told ESPN on Wednesday. The playoff will expand from four to 12 teams for each of the next two seasons, with the five highest-ranked conference champions joining the next seven highest-ranked teams in the field. The current, 12-year CFP contract expires following the 2025 season.

In March, the CFP and ESPN agreed to a new six-year, $7.8 billion contract that ensures the network will remain the sole media rights holder of the playoff through the 2031-32 season. The playoff format for that new contract, though, is uncertain beyond the guarantee it will continue to be at least a 12-team field. The CFP's management committee, which is comprised of the 10 FBS commissioners and Notre Dame athletic director Pete Bevacqua, will meet in-person in September, again at its annual meeting at the national championship game in January and during its annual spring meeting in April.

Tennis Hall of Fame moving ceremony to line up with US Open

The International Tennis Hall of Fame will move its enshrinement ceremony to August starting next year to better capture the attention of the tennis world on the eve of the US Open. The Newport facility also announced it will host a new combined men's and women's 125-level tournament in 2025, with equal prize money, to replace the men's 250-level event that is being dropped from the ATP schedule after this week. The combined Hall of Fame Open -- scheduled for July 6-13 in 2025 -- will be the only grass-court women's tournament outside of Europe. It's the first time the Hall will host a women's pro tournament since the 1990 Virginia Slims of Newport. The Hall for decades has hosted a men's tournament the week after Wimbledon, with the Hall of Fame inductions held on Saturday along with the semifinals. Leander Paes, Vijay Amritraj and Richard Evans will be inducted into the Hall this week in conjunction with the final edition of the 250 tournament.

"Schools must provide equal athletic opportunities based on sex, including with respect to benefits, opportunities, publicity, and recruitment, and must not discriminate in the provision of financial aid," Catherine Lhamon, the assistant secretary for the department's Office for Civil Rights, said in a written statement to ESPN. "In the new NIL environment, these same principles apply."

Committee proposes changing start dates for college basketball

A new proposal to start the women's basketball season days earlier than the men's season could amplify the growing spotlight on the women's game. The NCAA's men's and women's basketball oversight committees have proposed starting the women's basketball season on the Monday that falls 22 weeks before the women's Final Four each season, two days before the start of the men's season, beginning with the 2025-26 campaign. With the women beginning their season on a Monday and the men commencing their season on a Wednesday, the women's game would "have increased marketing and promotional opportunities contributing to elevation of the sport at a campus level," per the NCAA's release Wednesday.

Jake Paul registers sixth-round TKO victory over Mike Perry

Jake Paul scored a sixth-round TKO victory over bare-knuckle fighter Mike Perry on Saturday in Tampa, Florida, in an eight-round cruiserweight boxing match. With the win, Paul maintained his Nov. 15 showdown with the 58-year-old Mike Tyson that was originally scheduled for this night. Paul, a social-media star turned boxer, floored Perry three times before the referee halted the bout at 1:12 of Round 6.

Paul, meanwhile, will move onto an eight-round heavyweight bout with Tyson on Nov. 15 in Arlington, Texas, where they'll wear 14-ounce gloves. Tyson withdrew from the marquee event -- it will be streamed on Netflix -- after he suffered an ulcer flare-up on a flight in May.

Perry, 32, is the latest former UFC fighter to fall to Paul. Paul (10-1, 7 KOs) also defeated Tyron Woodley, Nate Diaz and Ben Askren. Paul, 27, was noticeably bigger and enjoyed a three-inch height advantage. Perry (0-2) of Orlando, Florida, fights at 175 pounds in the Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship. Perry's BKFC record is 5-0 and his last fight was in April.

Attorney: NCAA antitrust lawsuits settlement to be filed Friday

The full settlement agreement of antitrust lawsuits involving the NCAA and college sports' wealthiest conferences is expected to be filed with a federal court by the end of the week, an attorney for the defendants told The Associated Press on Tuesday. The NCAA, along with the Atlantic Coast Conference, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 and Southeastern Conference, agreed May 23 to the framework of a $2.77 billion settlement of multiple antitrust lawsuits that were challenging limits on college athlete compensation.

Houston Christian University, a Southland Conference school that has been competing in Division I, has already filed a motion to intervene in the settlement. The school claims schools outside the power conferences will unfairly absorb in inordinate amount of the cost of the damages to be paid out over a 10-year period. Schools in the non-power conferences have argued that more than 90% of the damages will be paid out to football and basketball players who have or are competing in conferences that were named in the lawsuit. The NCAA will pay out the damages from operating costs, reserves, insurance and from withheld distributions to Division I conferences.
