Doctor Who Series 10 - At Least It Will Be Better Than Class

So is Tomtrek boycotting ever posting about Doctor Who again to protest the fact that Kris Marshall hasn't taken over yet or what.

It wasn't bad, but nothing special. Not sure why Friday turned against the Empress halfway through. He was a pretty underdevloped character! Wonder what happened to the rest of the soldiers.

What was with Missy asking The Doctor if he was okay at the end? It looked like they were about to start kissing. It was weird.

Another "not bad" episode for a series that really seems to be striving to be no better than "not bad." I thought Moffat might have aimed a bit higher in his final series.

Also it was really obvious that it was filmed before last week's since they completely ignored last week's ending until the last three minutes in the TARDIS with Missy.

So this week's was good and certainly felt big and epic and important in a way this series hasn't until now. The stuff in the hospital was creepy and I liked the science fiction thing of time moving faster in one side of the ship (BUT WHAT ABOUT SPAGHETTIFICATION?) Pearl Mackie got to act again. Simm seemed like he's not going to be annoying as the Master this time becaue he wasn't laughing for ten minutes or jumping around eating turkey.

THE PROBLEM was that it was really obviously being paced for a cliffhanger ending and the BBC already gave away the cliffhanger by putting Simm and the original Cybermen in multiple trailers that it was impossible to miss. So while Bill's hospital stuf was going on I was thinking "oh they're just going to have the Master for the last minute and the Cyberman for the last two minutes" and the part with Missy finding out the planet's name and the Master's "shock" reveal fell flat.

Yeah, this episode would have been amazing had we not known about John Simm or the Cybermen beforehand. It's a shame the BBC Marketing Department thinks that telling everyone exactly what's going to happen is a bigger draw than any sort of mystery.

As it is, it was just... actually pretty good? All off the Bill in the Hospital stuff was really good, and added back a much-needed element of body horror that the Cyberman have been lacking for ages. I'm actually really liking what's going with Missy right now too.

At first I thought the Mr Razor (or whatever) character was this weird over-the-top and over-written comedy character, which annoyed be. But then the reveal was... that was the point! It was The Master! Acting! FOR YEARS! JUST TO FUCK OVER THE DOCTOR! THAT'S TOTALLY SOMETHING HE WOULD DO!

So yeah even though we all knew John Simm would be in this episode I was still happy with how he was revealed.

The only parts I didn't really care for was just how meta it got, with "Genesis of the Cybermen" being just a bit too far.

BUT YEAH I LIKED IT AND I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO NEXT WEEK.

I also liked it.

The people who edit the "next time" videos need shooting though.

The scene where the master says "I will not stand with the doctor" would have had a lot more impact if it didn't immediately follow a scene of him, Missy, and the Doctor all standing together.

Nice to see you back Tomtrek.

Also I thought "Razor" was supposed to be an alien at first because of the weird make-up before I realised it was weird old man make-up and am convinced if they hadn't spoiled that Simm was in the episode no one would have guessed it was him.

So yeah, this final episode seems very familiar, since its essentially the 11th Doctors final episode too.

The doctor has to fight an endless war against cybermen with only a lone cyberman as his most loyal companion? Ok Bill is more than just a head like Handles was, but damn Moffat, you are the greenest writer on TV with all this recycling!

I really don't like that cybermen can fly, way too Iron man, but that's been there a while now, also a Moffatt invention I believe.

The Missy Master betray I saw coming a mile off, I guess that's why a multi Doctor story is more viable than a multi Master story, their instinct for betrayal and murder even extends to themselves.

I liked the saving of Bill, a good call back to the first episode of this season, and leaves the way open for her to come back, now that she is essentially a tardis herself.

Now I am going to need help on this one, but I could swear when the doctor buried his hands in the snow and stopped the regeneration, for a second I saw Matt Smith's face, anyone else?

That ending though, Dave Bradley FTW.

It was definitely a bit of a step down from last week, but certainly not as big a step down as say 'Dark Water' to 'Death In Heaven' (Did newly regenerated Missy get the idea to give the Doctor an army of Cybermen from the events of this episode? Maybe!) Or any of RTD's finales apart from his first. John Simm felt kind of wasted for much of it? I mean after last week it looked like he was going to have a big showdown with the Doctor but the Cybermen quickly replaced him as the threat and he didn't get much to do other than the odd funny line. The stuff with him and Missy at the end was very very good, though obviously they'll undo Missy's unreversible death sometime. And we still didn't get to see his TARDIS even with it being mentioned a dozen times!

Bill's exit was really similar to Clara's, wasn't it? She "died" but was brought back in a way that left her not quite human and exploring the universe with a not quite human female companion. It didn't even feel very final at all with that one line about how easy it would be to turn her back into a human thrown in.

And yeah, Capaldi's "death" did remind me of Smith's. He did get to make a great speech to the Masters and Capaldi is always great...I guess he'll get his proper exit at Christmas though. Maybe it was on purpose that it and Bill's exit reminded us of previous exits. Maybe.

The children and the scarecrows at the start reminded me of 'Family of Blood' too but I guess that one wasn't on purpose.

Nardole actually got a pretty good send-off. Would have been better if he'd been a more developed character throughtout but whatever.

So yeah, it was a good episode and a good finale but not as good as Clara's final episode and probably not as good as Matt Smith's. Better than Tennant's but everyone's fucking is.

BBC Scotland fucked up the sound so I couldn't hear what the Doctor and David Bradley were saying at the end.

EDIT: I rewatched the end scene. It's definitely better when you can hear what's being said (BBC Scotland version couldn't even hear the companions saying "Doctor.")
