From my understanding they're doing the regeneration in the Christmas special.

Hurt isn't the new Doctor though, he is an old one that didn't deserve the name.

John Hurt will be appearing in the 50th anniversary special in November.

Matt Smith's last episode (and I'd assume his regeneration) is at Christmas.

It's possible John Hurt could appear in more episodes than just the 50th though.

So, that makes Smith's doctor #12? Or, because Hurt's Doctor "wasn't deserving of the name" the chain of the Time Lord named "Doctor" hasn't broken? If that's the case, what name did Hurt's "Doctor" choose for himself?

I'm so confused.

He is (as far as we know) another regeneration of the time lord known as "The Doctor", but he is not a "Doctor" is he did things that were unworthy of that name. So Matt Smith is still The Eleventh Doctor.

We don't actually know the details yet because that's what the 50th Anniversary Special is for.
