Don't forget: THE WALKING DEAD STARTS ON SUNDAY!!

The good part about having read the comics is that I remember certain key spots and I can watch with anticipation as they get closer, but other stuff has faded with time and the addition of new characters + timeline changes makes it all new. All I can say is keep watching: it gets damn good.

The thing that surprised me in the second ep was the zombie who climbed over the chain link fence. I'd noticed the more intelligent zombie in the first ep and the fact that some were using rocks as tools in the second ep but the fence scaling one made me seriously start thinking about zombie health and such like. Is it that fresher zombies are smarter and progressively degrade and/or does feeding actually contribute to how well a zombie stays in shape?

Well judging by the first couple of episodes the creators gave it some thought too, as we've seen all sorts of variations. It would seem that the state of decay is steady even though they walk, as evidenced by the gray guy in ep.2 and the chopped up guy. The brain function that makes them walk must be buried deep, like hypothalamus (which would fit if you wanted to be all scientific about it) and therefore protected from initial eating damage or decay for a while.

I liked that some of the walkers, like 'bike girl', were crawlers as their brain was driving them on but the muscles wouldn't or couldn't respond. The scene where he went back and she'd crawled quite a distance really struck me as realistic that way. Like her own little tv show kept rolling while we were watching the other guy. There were crawlers in the city too, and I also liked the different levels of motivation in the zombies, where some were gung ho and others like 'tank soldier' were just kind of there until disturbed. It would make getting around kinda fucked up for the survivors. You'd never know which corpses you happened onto were dead and which were just resting, pining for the fjords, so to speak.

And 'fence climbing guy' just adds a whole new wrinkle to it.

Never read the comic books so its all new to me. Its good so far though.

You've missed out, Loktar.

Yeah I know. I usually don't watch horror/zombie movies/TV shows. I only decided to watch this because Mentalist hyped up the comic book when metioning this TV show in a thread awhile back.

Watched episode 3 today, the frogs one. Good freaking episode, light on zombie action but heavy on suspense and drama.

My thoughts, in spoiler tags:

1. I really like the attention to detail I noticed from previous weeks. The zombie chick in the lobby of the store was the same one from last week. Rick mentioned the guns, the walkie talkie, and his friends. There were no obvious holes in plot. Even one issue I had, Glen driving his sound machine and possibly attracting zombies, was immediately addressed. I like it a lot.

Also, with regard to character:
I like that Merle wasn't one-dimensional, and in his own way was acknowledging he was being punished because of his own acts. He isn't contrite but he isn't a flat cardboard villain. I also wonder if he isn't being set up to replace the "governor character" from the comics. That story arc happens later in the comics, but there is a sequence where Rick is tortured and his hand is lost, which I was reminded of in the scene on the roof. Could they be setting Merle up to be the "Governor" and adding this little bit as extra fuel? Possibly. Also, the good guys aren't all Pollyanna, and there is great tension set up among the members of the camp.

All in all, I loved this episode. Hey moderator/admin types: would it be too much trouble to sticky this thread so we can yap about the series without hunting for it? Kthxbye...

No, the thread won't be stickied because none of the other tv discussion threads are stickied. SUBSCRIBE TO IT, MAYBE?

As for the spoiler...

I don't think Merle's intelligent and charismatic enough to be the Governor. I can't imagine him managed to organise and run a whole community and people willingly following him (of course he could get to be in charge by having a gang of heavies with guns.)

I'm thinking for the sake of time and tv they may change charisma to strongarm and fear. I suspect the bag of guns is going to also be gone next week which will mean Merle is free pissed and armed...so to speak. While I don't think that whole arc could be moved up enough to squash into the first season since they're down to three episodes left...I definitely could see Merle and Darryl finding a way to build a substantial base by next season. And the hand thing I could call coincidence except that Kirkman is heavily involved. Wouldn't he notice the similarity and change it to avoid potential cliche unless he "had something up his sleeve" lol?

It's possible. But Merle doens't seem like quite enough of a psycho to...

Have a zombie "daughter" who he's possibly in a sexual relationship with and rape Michonne for 48 hours straight.

Yeah I wondered about that too but some of those details seem a bit strong for basic cable. They might have to edit or rearrange a lot of the more heinous stuff like what you mentioned as too much for tv audiences. The daughter bit almost certainly wouldn't translate well although they might be able to do it if it were a random zombie chick, and we've already had Merle's racist and vindictive nature shown to us so a variation on what happened with Michonne isn't outside the realm of possibility. He'll be holding a grudge against all of them...

I get this show at 7pm on Sun. nights. On Sun. night @ 7 you can hear a pin drop in my house.

Something to watch while I'm waiting for Breaking Bad.

Fucking love it!

They killed the cutest girl. :(

At least they have all those graves ready!

Are we supposed to think Merle was somehow responsible for the zombie attack?

I'm really liking this show too. The use, or non use, of music adds so much to the atmosphere.

Loved the reveal on the bad ass gang members.

I wouldn't be surprised if Merle was responsible for the attack, but a zombie attack on the camp
was the catalyst for moving on in the books, hence a mapped out plot point that was necessary, much like the death of Amy.

I liked the twist on the Vatos, also.

I'm really beginning to be rather pissed about the quantity of episodes. Six just ain't enough...two left...
