'stunned' cowboys seek offseason answer--yet again
The Cowboys fought to win the NFC East for the second time in three years but were aided by the collapse of the Philadelphia Eagles, who slumped from 10-1 to 11-6. With the loss to the Packers, the Cowboys are the first team to win 12 games in three straight seasons and fail to make a conference title game in any of them since the 1970 merger. And now 2023 is just like 2022 and 2021 and every playoff season since 1995.

********
In the regular season, the Cowboys were 8-0 at AT&T Stadium. They were the only team to go undefeated at home in 2023. But the Packers tore through the defense on their first drive to score a touchdown, aided by two Cowboys penalties. With 1:50 left in the half, Green Bay safety Darnell Savage returned a Prescott interception 64 yards for a touchdown and a 27-0 lead.

Dak Prescott backs Mike McCarthy as Jerry Jones mum on coach's future

Before the Cowboys' 48-32 playoff loss to the Green Bay Packers in the wild-card round was even finished Sunday, there were questions swirling about the job status of Dallas coach Mike McCarthy. Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones, now 81 and a 28th season removed from the franchise's last Super Bowl appearance, would not get into what might or might not happen with McCarthy as Jones stood outside the locker room after the game.

"I haven't thought one second about it," Jones said. "I know how hard, how much it meant to our fans to advance. What this loss to me means, again, not how [or] why, who didn't do what, all of that type of thing -- the only thing on my mind almost this entire game was not an analysis of our strategy, not an analysis of our play, it was, 'Do we get to play here again next week?' And we can't. That could have happened by a point or it could have happened the way it happened out there. That's all I've thought about. It's real."

McCarthy has one more year left on his contract. He is 42-25 in four regular seasons with the Cowboys, including three straight 12-win campaigns and NFC East titles in 2021 and 2023. But he has just one playoff victory, and Sunday's loss came with the Cowboys having the chance to play two postseason contests at AT&T Stadium before a potential NFC Championship Game.

"I think the biggest thing is we're disappointed," McCarthy said. "I got a whole team in the locker room that's hurting. I haven't thought past the outcome of this game."

A number of Dallas players stood up for their coach, including quarterback Dak Prescott and left guard Tyler Smith. They said they appreciated McCarthy's willingness to take care of their health and well-being during the course of the season.

"He's been amazing. I don't know how there can be [questions about his status], but I understand the business," Prescott said. "In that case then there should be about me, as well, honestly. I mean, that guy -- I've had the season I've had because of him. This team has had the success that they've had because of him. And I understand it's about winning the Super Bowl, and that's the standard of the league and damn sure the standard of this place. I get it. But add me to the list in that case."

Gilmore on playoff meltdown: 'Didn't see it coming'

The final score was 48-32 but, to be quite honest, it wasn't ever really that close of a contest between the Dallas Cowboys and the Green Bay Packers. The latter came out firing on all cylinders while the latter failed to get into gear time and again, and the Cowboys' season now ends in shocking fashion on Super Wild Card Weekend. Jordan Love looked like prime Aaron Rodgers at AT&T Stadium on Sunday, the Dallas defense having no answers for him or running back Aaron Jones, and while McCarthy's offense did little (until it was too late) to save the day, it was easily the worst defensive outing in the Dan Quinn era. If they hadn't taken their foot off of the accelerator late, Love and Co. might've hung nearly 60 points on the Cowboys on their own field. For the majority of the contest, the Packers owned time of possession, conversion rate, yards per play, number of explosive plays, etc. etc., and the Cowboys defense registered zero sacks and zero takeaways for the first time all season.

Jerry Jones' disgusted reaction hints Cowboys will fire Mike McCarthy, hire Bill Belichick

The Dallas Cowboys had everything in front of them. A minimum of two home playoff games after surging to the No. 2 seed. Avoiding the 49ers until the NFC Championship Game. A favorable draw against a hot, but overachieving Packers team that fields the youngest roster in the NFL. Despite all of that, Mike McCarthy's team wet the bed to the highest extreme. There's obviously a ton of blame to go around. Dan Quinn should be near the top of the list after his defense got absolutely worked against Jordan Love and a bunch of first- and second-year receivers. and Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb picked the wrong time to have their worst games of the season. McCarthy has to top the list, though. The Cowboys unraveled after they fell down 14-0 early in the second quarter and McCarthy curled up into a shell as a play-caller at the first sight of adversity. Again. We hate -- absolutely hate -- to call for someone to lose their job, but Sunday should be McCarthy's final game as Cowboys head coach. If Jerry Jones had any sense, held already have Billchick on the phone discussing a contract.

Bill Belichick's Top Landing Spots After Cowboys Retain HC Mike McCarthy for 2024

So much for Bill Belichick being the person to end the Dallas Cowboys' decades-long Super Bowl drought. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Wednesday the Cowboys will keep head coach Mike McCarthy for the 2024 NFL season, and team owner Jerry Jones confirmed the move: Many fans thought McCarthy might be out the door following Dallas' disastrous showing in the NFC Wild Card Round. Belichick was then floated as a natural replacement given his past track record.
Instead, the vacancy won't be opening at all. Belichick at least has other options, some more attractive than others. Based on what's available, these franchises have the most to offer the 71-year-old.

4 cowboys coaching candidates who'd be better than bill belichick
The Dallas Cowboys did the unthinkable. Not only did they lose to the Packers, the youngest team in the NFL. Jerry Jones didn't state whether he'd relieve Mike McCarthy of his duties as head coach, but we're hard-pressed to think he doesn't make a change. This is a world-class hiring cycle in terms of available coaches, including six-time Super Bowl champ and the greatest head coach of all-time in Bill Belichick.

Jerry Jones kept Mike McCarthy, so what's next for Cowboys?

Mike McCarthy has come up with different themes for each Dallas Cowboys season. In 2023, it was "Carpe Ominia," Latin for seize everything. With owner and general manager Jerry Jones bringing McCarthy back for a fifth season, the head coach might not have to put much thought into the 2024 theme. How does "All or Nothing" sound? McCarthy signed a five-year deal with the Cowboys in 2020, and there was no word of any kind of extension being agreed to when the coach met with Jones on Wednesday.

He has a 42-25 record. He has won two NFC East titles in the past three seasons. With McCarthy calling plays this season for the first time in his tenure with the Cowboys, Prescott responded with his best campaign, leading the NFL in touchdown passes (36) a year after he tied for the lead in interceptions (15) despite missing five games with a broken thumb. The Cowboys have made the playoffs in three straight seasons, which they hadn't done since a six-year run from 1991 to 1996 that included wins in Super Bowls XXVII, XXVIII and XXX.

McCarthy became the first coach in team history to post three straight 12-win seasons, though some of that is due to playing a 17-game schedule. With McCarthy as the playcaller in 2023, the Cowboys finished No. 1 in points per game (29.9) and No. 5 in yards (371.6). Ultimately, however, McCarthy will be judged on his postseason success. So far, he has lost in the first round of the playoffs twice -- both at AT&T Stadium -- including Sunday's 48-32 enbarrassment against the Green Bay Packers.

Why Dak Prescott has become the Cowboys' new Tony Romo

The career arcs ofDak Presott and Tony Romo have become so similar they have essentially become the same Dallas Cowboys quarterback. Each showed outstanding regular-season success but left lingering questions in the playoffs. They were teammates for one season, 2016, when the rookie Prescott took over after Romo suffered a preseason back injury. Prescott has held the job ever since. They share a beloved underdog narrative; Romo as an undrafted free agent, Prescott as a fourth-round pick. They were selected for multiple Pro Bowls. They set team records. They used the power of their position with "America's Team" to become household names. But neither has done what Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman did by winning Super Bowls, which ties Prescott and Romo together even more.

Romo had a 2-4 playoff record. Prescott's stands at 2-5 after Sunday's 48-32 demolition by the Green Bay Packers in the wild-card round. Romo had three chances to advance to an NFC Championship Game (2007, 2009, 2014) and never got there. Prescott's chance at a fourth try was wiped out by the Packers after missed chances in 2016, 2018 and 2022.

Prescott turns 31 in July and played every game this season for the first time since 2019, while leading the NFL in touchdown passes (36). Like Romo, he has suffered serious injuries, like a dislocated and fractured right ankle in 2020, and a broken right thumb that forced him to miss five games in 2022, but he believes his off-field habits have made him stronger and more durable.

what will the cowboys do with dak precott contract?
Prescott has a $59.4 million salary cap figure, second largest in the NFL behind the Cleveland Browns' Deshaun Watson. This is the final year of the four-year, $160 million deal Prescott signed after the 2020 season that included $126 million guaranteed. The Cowboys have three options with Prescott and his contract: do nothing, add voidable years to his deal, or sign him to a massive contract extension.

Cowboys' Jerry Jones: 'No doubt' I could work with Bill Belichick

It appears Bill Belichick won't be a head coach in the NFL next season. But if the Dallas Cowboys decide to move on from Mike McCarthy after next season, could Jerry Jones' team be an option for the future Hall of Fame coach? Talking to Yahoo Sports at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama, the Cowboys owner and general manager said there's "no doubt" he could work with the former New England Patriots coach, whom he calls a "friend." "I know him personally and I like him," Jones told Yahoo. "There's no doubt in my mind we could work together. None."

The Cowboys announced earlier this month that McCarthy would return after the team flopped in a 48-32 loss to the Green Bay Packers in the wild-card round. McCarthy is 42-25 with NFC East titles in 2021 and 2023, earning 12 wins in three of his four seasons but is 1-3 in the postseason. He signed a five-year contract with the Cowboys in 2020, so he will be entering the final year of that deal next season. Jones praised McCarthy on Tuesday when he met with reporters at the Senior Bowl and said the Cowboys would be "all-in" for the 2024 season.

The Cowboys have won three Super Bowl titles under Jones' ownership but haven't advanced to the NFC Championship Game since 1995, the second-longest drought in the conference behind only Washington (1991).

Cowboys' early playoff exit 'embarrassing,' says Emmitt Smith

Dallas Cowboys Hall of Famer Emmitt Smith, the NFL's all-time leading rusher, has made it clear in a number of interviews this week from Super Bowl LVIII that he is perplexed as to why Mike McCarthy is still the head coach.

----------------------
"To be honest, I am a little surprised all because the way things have transpired over the last few years. Removing Kellen [Moore] and taking over the controls of the offense and so forth," Smith said on ESPN Radio. "I am a little surprised. The way our team exited out of the playoffs, I am real surprised. Because to me, I look to my leaders and leaders look to players to be ready and be prepared for the situations in all situations. And unfortunately for us, I don't know if we were as prepared as we needed to be.
---------------------

The Cowboys, who won the NFC East and were the conference's No. 2 seed, were the only home team to lose in the wild-card round of the playoffs, getting hammered 48-32 by the Green Bay Packers at AT&T Stadium. The Cowboys were the only team last year to go undefeated at home in the regular season and had won 16 straight, their longest home win streak since 1979-80. The Cowboys have gone 12-5 in each of the last three seasons but have just one playoff victory, a wild-card win at Tampa Bay in 2022. They have lost two home playoff games under McCarthy.

---------------------
"At the end of the day, I don't understand the mission," Smith told 96.7 The Ticket on Friday. "I don't know if the mission is to sell more tickets and then give us the illusion that we're going to be good every year, and to get ratings every year, or to actually go and win a Super Bowl."
