Cowboys add Mike Zimmer as DC after uncertainty about hiring

The Cowboys reached agreement Monday with Mike Zimmer to make the former Minnesota Vikings coach Dallas' new defensive coordinator. A source had confirmed to ESPN last week that Zimmer was expected to be hired as the Cowboys' defensive coordinator. But ESPN analyst Rex Ryan, who had talked to the team about the job, said on ESPN's "Postseason NFL Countdown" on Sunday, "I'm not so sure Zimmer has that job right now. I'm not sure about that. I can honestly say I don't believe that's a fact right now."

And on Monday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the Cowboys had reached back out to Ryan on Sunday about the position. However, Zimmer and the Cowboys agreed to contract terms Monday afternoon. He replaces Dan Quinn, who was hired last week as the Commanders' new coach after a three-year run as the Cowboys' defensive coordinator. Zimmer, 67, was a Cowboys assistant coach from 1994 to 2006, starting as a defensive assistant, moving to defensive backs in 1995 -- the last season for which Dallas won a Super Bowl -- and serving as the coordinator from 2000 to 2006 under two different head coaches, Dave Campo (2000-02) and Bill Parcells (2003-06).

micah parsons suggest two moves the cowboys should make this offseason
As for the offensive side of the ball, Parsons hopes the Cowboys bring back Tony Pollard as the running back is slated to become a free agent after playing out the 2023 season on the franchise tag. - Parsons also added that he'd retire "before I go somewhere else," so it doesn't seem like there is much pressure at this juncture with what is likely to be a market-setting extension whenever it comes around.

Golden Richards, former Cowboys deep threat, dies at age 73

Golden Richards, the former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver known for his flowing blond hair who famously caught a touchdown pass off a gadget play in the 1978 Super Bowl, died Friday of congestive heart failure at his home in Murray. He was 73. The former BYU star spent seven seasons in the NFL with Dallas, Chicago and Detroit and is best known for his five-plus seasons as a deep-play threat with the Cowboys. He twice averaged more than 21 yards per catch, finishing his time in Dallas with an 18.3 career mark.

That was especially evident in the 1978 Super Bowl against the Broncos. With the Cowboys ahead 20-10 in the fourth quarter, fullback Robert Newhouse threw a 29-yard touchdown pass to Richards, who got behind the defense to all but assure the Cowboys of their second championship. Richards finished his career with 122 receptions for 2,136 yards and 17 touchdowns before injuries prompted him to retire in 1980. Richards played his final college season at Hawai'I, catching 23 passes for 414 yards and five touchdowns. That caught the eye of the Cowboys, who drafted him in the second round in 1973.

dak prescott 'confident' on contract resolution with cowboys
"I'm definitely confident," Prescott said after taking part in a Children's Cancer Fund event with Hall of Famer Troy Aikman on Monday. "Obviously it helps the team. It's important for the numbers ... That is a process. Both sides understand that. Everything's great. It'll happen."

Sources: Cowboys rework Zack Martin's contract, free cap space

The Dallas Cowboys have reworked the contract for All-Pro right guard Zack Martin to open up salary cap space this year and potentially allow them to spread a cap hit over the 2025 and 2026 seasons should 2024 be his final year with the organization, according to multiple sources. Martin's contract was set to expire after this season, but he had three voidable years through 2027. The Cowboys gained about $13 million in space for 2024 by reworking his deal, which gets them under the $255 million cap before the start of the league year next week.

In 2023, Martin started 15 games, missing one game with an ankle injury and another with an illness, and was named to the Pro Bowl for the ninth time in 10 years and an All-Pro for the seventh time. Martin turns 34 in November. Only Hall of Famers Bob Lilly (11), Larry Allen (10) and Mel Renfro (10), plus 11-timer Jason Witten, who is not eligible for the Hall of Fame yet, have been selected to more Pro Bowls than Martin in Dallas history. The Cowboys have other moves they can make to create 2024 salary cap space.

Jerry Jones' 'all-in' isn't what Cowboys fans want it to be

Every now and then Jerry Jones will come up with a saying that gets repeated and repeated and repeated. When Tony Romo was the Dallas Cowboys' quarterback, the owner said the team's offseason approach one year was "Romo friendly." Later, when Dak Prescott was the quarterback, he said the approach was "Dak friendly." This offseason, Jones came up with "all-in" when speaking to reporters at the Senior Bowl, and that has become his newest oft-repeated phrase. But there is some caution to throw in when Cowboys fans start dreaming of New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley, Baltimore Ravens linebacker Patrick Queen or Kansas City Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones joining their team when free agency begins next week.

"Your definition of what is 'all-in' and mine might not be the same thing," Jones said later at the scouting combine in Indianapolis, "but I'm trying to win the games this year with my decision. So I'm all-in to this year."

The Cowboys have not shopped in the high-end part of the market since signing cornerback Brandon Carr to a five-year, $50 million deal in 2012. They have shopped on the edges. The two unrestricted free agents they signed last year were tackle Chuma Edoga and running back Ronald Jones. In 2022, it was pass-rusher Dante Fowler Jr. and wide receiver James Washington. The difference in approach last year was the wise low-cost trades for wide receiver Bradin Cooks (2023 fifth-rounder, 2024 sixth-rounder) and cornerback Stephon Gilmore (2023 fifth) that paid off handsomely in a 12-5 record and an NFC East title.

Defamation suit against Cowboys' Jerry Jones tossed again

For the second time, a federal judge has tossed out defamation claims filed against Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and several associates by a woman who says she is the billionaire's daughter. Federal Judge Robert W. Schroeder III on Wednesday dismissed the lawsuit filed by Alexandra Davis "with prejudice," meaning the case cannot be filed again. Schroeder initially tossed the case last October, and Davis' attorneys refiled it in November. Davis, a 27-year-old congressional aide, originally sued Jones in March 2022 to seek recognition as his biological daughter, a matter that is still pending. The separate defamation case, filed that same month, named as defendants Jones, his longtime personal lawyer, Donald P. Jack, and Jim Wilkinson, a communications consultant for the Jones family.

s.jones: cowboys' moves unaffected by dak prescott cap hit
Prescott is entering the final year of his contract and is set to make $29 million in base salary with a $5 million roster bonus due Saturday. The Cowboys cannot place the franchise tag on him, based on a clause in his contract, and he also has a no-trade contract.

Sources: Cowboys rework Dak Prescott's contract to reduce cap hit

The Dallas Cowboys are slightly reducing quarterback Dak Prescott's massive salary cap hit by reworking his contract going into the final year of the deal, sources told ESPN's Field Yates on Monday. A $5 million roster bonus has been converted into a signing bonus to reduce the 2024 cap hit by $4 million, to just over $55 million, the sources told Yates. The Cowboys can create more salary cap relief with an extension for Prescott, who is coming off a wild-card loss at home to Green Bay that dropped his playoff record to 2-5. The reworking of the contract included adding two more voidable years in 2027 and 2028, which pushed Prescott's salary cap number in 2025 up slightly to $40 million.

Leighton Vander Esch retiring after release from Cowboys

Former Dallas Cowboys linebacker Leighton Vander Esch is retiring after dealing with recurring neck issues in his six-year career. A first-round pick in 2018, Vander Esch set a Cowboys' rookie record with 176 tackles and was named to the Pro Bowl as his "Wolf Hunter" nickname became a signature call during games. He entered the NFL with questions about his neck and missed time because of neck injuries in 2019, 2022 and 2023. After learning under Sean Lee for three seasons, Vander Esch became the leader of the defense in recent years. His absence proved problematic for the run defense in the past two seasons and the Cowboys needed to convert safety Markques bell to linebacker in 2023. For his career, Vander Esch was credited with 469 tackles, 3.5 sacks, 13 quarterback pressures, 13 pass breakups, 3 forced fumbles and 2 fumble recoveries, one of which led to a touchdown last season in a win against the New England Patriots.

What happens if Cowboys don't extend Dak Prescott's contract?

As we wait and wonder when or if the Dallas Cowboys and Dak Prescott will come to an agreement on an extension in 2024, let's play out what some would call the worst-case scenario: The quarterback doesn't re-sign between now and January and is set to become an unrestricted free agent in 2025. But first, here are a couple of ways they could get to that point: The Cowboys make the playoffs for the fourth straight year, hoping to get to a Super Bowl for the first time since 1995. In order to get there, Prescott will have had another top season, like he did in 2023 when he led the NFL in touchdown passes with 36 and threw for 4,516 yards. Given the current state of the roster, it will likely be Prescott's finest season because the Cowboys have to replace starting left tackle Tyron Smith, center Tyler Biadasz, tailback Tony Pollard and wide receiver Michael Gallup.

Or ...

The Cowboys miss the playoffs, but Prescott has what has become his average season: 25 touchdown passes and nine interceptions. He plays well enough to warrant a new deal, but there are too many holes on the roster to get back to the postseason. What happens next? It will become a mad dash from the end of the regular season to March 12, the start of the 2025 league year, for the Cowboys to sign Prescott to a new contract. Through all of this, that is the deadline of deadlines. Without a new contract by then, Prescott will count at least $40.46 million against the 2025 salary cap, and he will not be on the Cowboys' roster. With a contract done before then, Prescott's cap number will be at least $25 million as a result of the restructures the Cowboys have used on the current deal, including converting his $5 million roster bonus earlier this month .

Sources: Cowboys, RB Ezekiel Elliott open to possible reunion

The Dallas Cowboys and free agent running back Ezekiel Elliott have mutual interest in a reunion, sources tell ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. While a deal between Elliott and his former club has not been reached, both sides are open to it, sources added. Dallas likes the way Elliott finished the 2023 season in New England, where he played in all 17 regular-season games and saw a significant increase in workload in the final five weeks of the year after top rusher Rhamondre Stevenson was sidelined with a high-ankle sprain.

Elliott, who turns 29 on July 22, had waited until August last season before signing a one-year deal with the Patriots worth $3 million. He spent the first seven years of his career with the Cowboys before being released last March. The 6-foot, 226-pound Elliott was selected fourth overall in the 2016 draft by the Cowboys. Elliott led the NFL in rushing in two of his first three seasons (1,631 yards in 2016, 1,434 yards in 2018). A three-time Pro Bowl selection, he has rushed for 8,904 yards and 71 touchdowns in his career. He also has 356 catches for 2,649 yards and 14 touchdowns.
