Cowboys' Zack Martin wonders if 2024 might be final season

As Zach Martin enters his 11th season with the Dallas Cowboys, the nine-time Pro Bowler and seven-time first-team All Pro wonders if 2024 could be his final one. Martin turns 34 in November. His nine Pro Bowls are the second most by an offensive lineman in team history -- one behind the 10 Larry Allen earned. His seven first-team All-Pro selections are tied for the most in team history with Bob Lilly and Randy White. While he has missed only 13 games in his career, Martin acknowledged "wear and tear" on his body. Martin held out of a portion of training camp last year before receiving $36 million guaranteed over the 2023 and 2024 seasons, a raise of $8.5 million. The Cowboys reworked Martin's contract again this offseason, but it was with the idea that 2024 could be his final season and allowed them to spread out a potential salary cap hit in 2025 while saving $13.5 million against the 2024 cap.

Dak Prescott's Cowboys future: New contract or test free agency?

In the real world, patience is a virtue. In Jerry World, patience is expensive. For the second straight contract cycle, team owner Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys find themselves in an inexplicable game of contract chicken with quarterback Dak Prescott. The mistakes made leading up to his four-year $160 million deal in 2021 have left the franchise in an intensely vulnerable position as the season approaches. With Prescott's price only rising, the Cowboys run a serious risk of losing him for nothing in 2025. Would that be a bad thing? What are Dallas' options if it does move on from Prescott? Are the Cowboys doomed to fail if they re-sign him? I'll answer those questions and a bunch more in a deep dive into the signal-caller's future. To understand what happens next, though, you have to understand how the Cowboys got here in the first place. They handed Prescott more leverage than any other player in football when they stalled on his last deal. They're in an even more perilous position this time around.

What's Up at WR? Lamb determines success

While the agreed upon deal for CeeDee Lamb and the Cowboys awaits an agreement, the receiver room in Dallas is set to head into 2024 with a healthy combination of youth and experience up top with unproven but talented depth at the lower portions of the depth chart. Lamb is coming off arguably the best season for a wide receiver in franchise history after setting team records in receptions (135) and receiving yards (1,749) in a season, while Brandin Cooks enters his second season in Dallas fresh off a hot finish to 2023 that saw him perfectly complement Lamb.

Source: Cowboys' Dak Prescott no longer wearing walking boot

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott recently suffered a minor right foot sprain that temporarily required a walking boot, a source told ESPN's Todd Archer. Prescott was seen in a walking boot while on vacation in Cabo San Lucas in a practice posted to X. It was unclear when the picture was taken, and he is no longer wearing the boot, according to the source. The injury is not expected to impact Prescott when the Cowboys hold their first training camp practice on July 25.

2024 Dallas Cowboys training camp Preview

The player with the most to prove:

Sources: CeeDee Lamb not expected to report to training camp

Dallas Cowboys star CeeDee Lamb, who has been unable to land the type of contract extension that other wide receivers have, is not expected to report to training camp Wednesday with the rest of his team, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter on Tuesday night. Lamb is entering the last year of a deal scheduled to pay him $17.99 million this season, and the Cowboys have been bracing for the All-Pro to miss the start of camp. The holdout will not become official until Wednesday, but Lamb was not on the team's charter flight from Dallas on Tuesday. That is not a required flight, however, and a number of players, including quarterback Dak Prescott, were already on campus at the River Ridge Residence Inn before the buses arrived in mid-afternoon. The Cowboys' first practice is scheduled for Thursday. Lamb skipped the mandatory minicamp in June, leading to fines totaling roughly $100,000, although those can be rescinded by the team. He faces a daily fine of $50,000 that cannot be rescinded for every day missed in training camp, according to the collective bargaining agreement. Lamb is coming off the best season of his career, setting a team record and leading the league with 135 receptions for 1,745 yards, which was second best in the NFL. He also scored 14 touchdowns (12 receiving) in earning first-team All-Pro honors.

Why it's all-in or else for the 2024 Dallas Cowboys
Gone is Tony Pollard, who ran for 1,000 yards, replaced by a backfield committee that will include Ezekiel Elliott , who is coming off the lowest output of his career when he shared the workload with the New England Patriots last season. Gone is Tyron Smith, the future Hall of Fame left tackle. At cornerback, gone (at least for the moment) is cornerback Stephen Gilmore, and will Trevon Diggs' return from a torn ACL go smoothly? Gone is center Tyler Biadasz, who will be replaced by Brock Hoffman, who has two career starts, or third-round pick Cooper Beebe.

Cowboys' Martin, Elliott sympathize with CeeDee Lamb's holdout

If CeeDee Lamb wants to know what a prolonged holdout from training camp feels like, he can reach out to Dallas Cowboys teammates Zack Martin and Ezekiel Elliott. Martin missed three weeks of training camp last year before getting an adjustment made to his contract. Elliott missed all of camp and the preseason games in 2019 before signing a six-year, $90 million contract that included $50 million in guaranteed money. Lamb's holdout is just three days and two practices old as he looks for a megadeal that would make him one of the highest-paid receivers in the NFL. Executive vice president Stephen Jones said Friday he had talks with Lamb's agent, Tory Dandy, on Thursday. Jones also spoke with Todd France, the agent of Dak Presott, as they try to work out a deal.

Lamb is scheduled to make $17.99 million on the fifth-year option. A new deal would likely land him somewhere around $32 million or more annually with $100 million guaranteed. He led the NFL in catches last season and set team records with 135 catches and 1,749 yards. The absences of Elliott and Martin did not impact their on-field performance. Elliott ran for 1,357 yards and 12 touchdowns and was named to the Pro Bowl. Martin was named to the Pro Bowl and was a first-team All-Pro. Neither believes Lamb will have a problem getting up to speed once the situation is resolved. During practice, the Cowboys have not made concessions to Lamb's absence in terms of the repetitions for the other receivers.

Contract extension not top of mind for Cowboys' Micah Parsons

Linebacker Micah Parsons knows he might be third on the list behind CeeDee lamb and Dak Prescott when it comes to getting a contract extension done with the Dallas Cowboys, but he can't see himself leaving the organization even if he had the chance. Parsons is under contract through 2025 after the Cowboys picked up his fifth-year option in the spring. He is scheduled to make $21.32 million in 2025 if he does not sign an extension sooner. Lamb is set to make $17.99 million this year on his fifth-year option. Prescott can become a free agent in March. In his first three seasons, Parsons has finished second twice and third once in voting for Defensive Player of the Year. He has been named to the Pro Bowl and has been a first- or second-team All-Pro in each of his first three seasons, combining for a total 40.5 sacks.
