After worst home loss of Jones era, owner backs coach McCarthy
After suffering the worst home loss of his time as Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager, 47-9 to the Detroit Lions on Sunday, Jerry Jones backed his head coach, Mike McCarthy. When reminded about the previous in-season coaching change he made in 2010 when he fired Wade Phillips and named Jason Garrett as interim coach after a 1-7 start, Jones became terse. "That would be a hypothetical. In that matter, do you think I'm an idiot? Do you? OK. Well, I'm not going to hypothetical with you about would I consider a coaching change in light of the timing we're sitting here with. I'm not. At all," he said.McCarthy is in the final year of his contract. Despite his posting three straight 12-5 finishes, the Cowboys' lack of playoff success -- they haven't advanced beyond the divisional round of the playoffs and have lost two postseason games at AT&T Stadium since he was hired in 2020 -- put McCarthy's future in question entering the season. Before Sunday, the largest home defeat in the Jones era came in 2001 (36-3 to the Philadelphia Eagles). There have been only three other home losses that have had larger margin of defeats in team history. The Cowboys will have to stew over this loss for two weeks, as they have their bye next week.

Jerry Jones got heated during his weekly radio appearance Tuesday when he was about to be asked whether the Dallas Cowboys' lack of aggressiveness in the offseason has played a part in their 3-3 start. What did quarterback Dak Prescott do during the Dallas Cowboys' bye week? He got engaged. But he did much more than that. He was at The Star a couple times and got some work in off-campus with receivers, including CeeDee Lamb to try to improve after a so-so start to the season. If the Cowboys are going to make it to the playoffs for a fourth straight season -- something they have not done since the Super Bowl runs of the 1990s -- it will be with Prescott leading the way. So far this season, Prescott has thrown for 1,602 yards, but in three of six games, he completed less than 60% of his passes. He had just one game like that last season. He has never had more than four games in a season with less than a 60% completion rate. Prescott has six interceptions, putting him on pace for a career-high 17. Twice he's had six in his first six starts (2019, 2022). In 2019, he finished with 11 INTs in 16 games, but in 2022, his 15 INTs in 12 games (he missed five with a broken thumb) tied for the most in the NFL. Much has been made of the route running by the Cowboys wide receivers since Troy Aikman's criticism. According to ESPN Research, Cowboys pass catchers are averaging 2.9 yards of separation. Only the 49ers have been worse (2.8 yards). Last season, when Prescott led the NFL in touchdown passes (36) and had his best completion percentage (69.5%), Cowboys pass catchers created 3.1 yards of separation, which was just 31st in the league. 'Disappointed' Cowboys fall to 3-4 after loss to 49ers
When the season started, the Dallas Cowboys never believed they would be in such a predicament after seven games. With Sunday's 30-24 loss to the San Francisco 49ers, the Cowboys are 3-4 and closer to the bottom of the NFC than a Super Bowl contender at the moment. Cowboys' Dak Prescott expected to miss several weeks, source says
Monday had a lot of moving parts for the Dallas Cowboys, now 3-5 after Sunday's loss to the Atlanta Falcons, and none was bigger than the health of quarterback Dak Prescott. Coach Mike McCarthy said the Cowboys were prepared to say only that Prescott will miss Sunday's game against the Philadelphia Eagles with a right hamstring injury, although a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter that Prescott is expected to miss several weeks. Prescott is in the process of getting a second opinion, and once that information is finalized, the Cowboys could discuss the possibility of putting him on injured reserve. If they make that move, he would be out until Dec. 9 against the Cincinnati Bengals. The immediate focus is on the Eagles with Cooper Rush as the starting quarterback. Since 2020, Prescott has missed games with a dislocation and fracture of his right ankle, a right calf strain and a broken right thumb. Rush went 4-1 as the Cowboys' starter in 2022 after Prescott suffered the thumb injury in the season opener. The Cowboys did not score more than 25 points in any of Rush's starts, but the defense allowed more than 20 points just once. Sources: Cowboys trade 4th-rounder for Panthers WR Jonathan Mingo
The Dallas Cowboys acquired wide receiver Jordan Mingo and a 2025 seventh-round pick from the Carolina Panthers for a 2025 fourth-round pick, sources told ESPN on Tuesday. Mingo, a second-round pick in 2023 out of Mississippi, has 12 receptions for 121 yards this season. He has one catch in the past four games and has only two games in his career with more than four catches. In Carolina, Mingo was behind 2024 first-round pick Xavier Legette, undrafted rookie Jalen Coker and 2017 seventh-round pick David Moore, despite the hamstring injury sustained by Adam Thielen and the trade of Diontae Johnson.
