IF VA TECH HADN'T OUTLAWED GUNS ON CAMPUS

No, what needs to be dealt with are people who think shooting people like this is OK. It's a person thing, not a gun thing.

That's really unworkable in many ways though. The reality is that you can't stop insane fuckers going mad and doing insane things all of the time.

Obviously there has to be early detection systems in place to get to these psychotics before they go on these rampages but there is only so much you can do in a free society for obvious reasons. There definitley needs to be more stringent criteria on how easy it is to get firearms. Walking in with a driving licence isn't enough.

There isn't any one solution but that has to be part of any real attempt to make it harder for the unstable to get access in the first place.

I think the solution is easy. If everyone is armed, then when you pull a gun on someone you better be meaning to use it. Most guncrime victims are unarmed.

OK,
here are some situations
1. A gunman enters a nunnery
2. A gunman enters a rehabilatation centre for criminals who have used guns for violence
3. A gunman enters a mental hospital
4. A gunman storms a swimming pool

I'm being flippant, but you get the point. Guns are not always the 1st solution

The millions of crimes stopped by sane, responsible adults armed with firearms is completely overshadowed by this extreme example.

Time to outlaw them entirely.

And you'll be able to pry mine from my cold, dead, hands.

If some of these newscasts keep insisting on permeating their reports on this story with sad piano music, I'm afraid I'm going to have to ask they end the reports with the closing piano music from "The Incredible Hulk". The one where Bill Bixby wanders along a lonely mountain road in the Rocky Mountains with a plaid shirt and a backpack.

Everyone will be screaming "more gun control!" but it's precisely the result of extensive gun control laws already in place that there are 30+ students dead...nobody was allowed, due to federal, state, local and no doubt on-campus gun regulations, to be armed...so a lone insane gun wielder can have free range.

The UK legislation of 10 years ago has completely stopped all crimes of this type in the UK.

It has been 100% successful in the original purpose of the law - to stop lone nutjob shooters who hold legal weapons.

For 10 years people. No incidents at all.

??? Beatings count. The videos of street gangs beating the fucking shit out of cops when they disagree is a hoot.

That's asinine. You're assuming that the result of an armed Virginia Tech campus would have been to take out the spree killer with fewer casualties. That's not a safe assumption -- given the general panic in the face of the mayhem a lot of armed citizens could have made things a lot worse.

Secondly, the downside of an armed campus is pretty obvious. How many drunken fights occur on a typical weekend at Virginia Tech? Do you really want immature, reckless college kids to be strapped? It's indisputable that a lot more murders would take place.

Yeah, better the students figured out how to wedge desks between them and the gunman so they wouldn't be killed.

You're an idiot.

Meaningless in a country where prvite citizens can't own guns.

Worse than 33 dead?

I doubt that...but it's pure speculation.
