Orioles' Gunnar Henderson tops pre-arbitration bonus pool
Baltimore shortstop Gunner Henderson is projected to receive the largest amount from this season's $50 million pre-arbitration bonus pool based on his regular-season statistics. Henderson is on track to get $1,325,021, according to WAR calculations through July 7 that Major League Baseball sent to teams, players and agents in a memo Thursday that was obtained by The Associated Press. Kansas City shortstop Bobby Witt Jr, is second at $1,192,410. Rob Manfred: MLB worried about threats to players from gambling
Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred expressed concern Tuesday for player safety as it relates to gambling while expressing confidence in the league's ability to catch personnel who violate the league's gambling policies. Speaking hours before the All-Star Game, Manfred said he's heard from players about threats they are receiving -- though he didn't get into specifics about them. Manfred's comments come on the heels of several player suspensions this season and even a lifetime ban for gambling, combined with an umpire currently under investigation for a violation as well.
"If a player receives a threat from any source, on any topic, it is a matter of concern to us that we take really seriously," Manfred stated. "I've had players in the last month mention this issue to me as one of concern and we're discussing what we should do to be more proactive in this area."
Manfred is confident the league's association with gambling entities is helping police their policies. Those companies report violations to the league which can lead to investigations being opened and stiff penalties assessed. Last month, San Diego Padres infielder Tucupita Marcano was banned for life for gambling a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates last season. Four other players received one-year suspensions. Manfred also indicated that talks have gained some steam in regard to MLB players participating in the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028. The league could take several different paths in order for players to participate including shortening the 2028 season by games or lengthening it by days or weeks.

Judge denies MLBPA request to confirm ruling vs. Bad Bunny agency
The Major League Baseball Players Association lost in its attempt to get a federal judge to confirm an arbitration decision denying an attempt by an agent at Bad Bunny's Rimas Sports firm to block his decertification by the union. U.S. District Judge Lewis J. Liman wrote Thursday that the arbitrator's decision was not a final ruling in the case and not subject to judicial confirmation. The discipline remained in place while an appeal is heard by a different arbitrator. The union revoked the certification of agent William Arroyo and denied the applications for certification by Rimas co-owners Noah Assad and Jonathan Miranda on April 10, citing alleged violations of agent regulations. The three were prohibited from reapplying for certification for five years, and the union issued a $400,000 fine and said certified agents could not associate with Rimas, the three individuals and any associated entities.
Comcast, Bally Sports announce carriage deal set for August
Comcast's monthslong blackout of Bally Sports channels is finally coming to an end. The two sides announced Monday that they agreed on a new carriage deal, allowing baseball fans to watch their local teams beginning Thursday, which marks the start of August. The deal -- which applies to the 15 regional sports networks owned by Diamond Sports Group, the bankrupt operator of Bally Sports channels -- allows fans to watch live, local MLB, NBA and NHL games if they are subscribed to Xfinity's "Ultimate TV," its most expensive cable package. Xfinity customers who upgrade to the "Ultimate TV" package by Aug. 30 can get it free for a three-month trial period, after which it will cost an additional $20 a month, according to a spokesperson for the company.
Cardinals get Erick in 8-player deal with Dodgers
Fedde, 31, signed a two-year, $15 million contract coming off a stint in South Korea and has gone 7-4 with a 3.11 ERA and 108 strikeouts while making 21 starts for the last-place White Sox this season. Selected by Washington in the first round of the 2014 amateur draft, Fedde is 28-37 with a 4.92 ERA in 123 big league games, including 109 starts.
Cardinals send Dylan Carlson to Rays for RHP Shawn Armstrong
Carlson, 25, was a highly touted first-round draft pick by St. Louis in 2016, but his numbers have declined since he batted a career-best .266 with 18 home runs over 149 games in 2021. He has hit .225 with 13 homers and 80 RBIs in 263 games since. - Armstrong, 33, is 2-2 with one save and a 5.40 ERA in 38 appearances (seven starts) for Tampa Bay this season. He is 10-7 with eight saves and a 4.18 ERA in 280 career games (16 starts) with the Cleveland Guaardians (2015-2017), Seattle Mariners (2018-2019), Baltimore Orioles (2019-2021), Miami Marlins (2022) and Rays (2021, 2022-2024).
Pirates acquire Bryan De La Cruz, Isiah Kiner-Falefa at deadline
De La Cruz, 27, led the Marlins with 18 home runs and 51 RBIs while batting .245 in 105 games this season. He is one homer away from tying his career high set last year. In 431 career games for Miami since debuting in 2021, De La Cruz has batted .258 with 55 homers and 191 RBIs. - In Kiner-Falefa, the Pirates are getting a player who has appeared as a second baseman, third baseman, shortstop, outfielder and emergency pitcher this season alone. Across 729 career games for the Texas Rangers (2018-2021), New York Yankees (2022-23) and Blue Jays, Kiner-Falefa is a .264 hitter with 33 homers, 236 RBIs and 77 stolen bases.
Twins add bullpen help with Blue Jays RHP Trevor Richards
The 31-year-old has a 4.64 ERA in 52⅓ innings with 24 walks, 49 strikeouts and a .189 opponent batting average. Since the start of last season, Richards has the eighth-best strikeouts-per-nine-innings ratio (11.09) in the AL. This will be Richards' fifth major league club, following stints with Miami, Tampa Bay and Milwaukee. He has a 4.51 ERA in 547 career innings.
Orioles bolster rotation with Marlins Trevor Rodgers
Rogers, 26, is 2-9 with a 4.53 ERA but has gotten better results over his past nine starts, generating a 3.17 ERA. Norby is ranked as the Orioles' 12th-best overall prospect by ESPN's Kiley McDaniel. Stowers, 26, reached the majors in the past, but he has had all but 36 at-bats in the minor leagues this season.
Orioles acquire Eloy Jimenez from White Sox
The 27-year-old Jimenez is hitting .240 with just five home runs and 16 RBIs this season. He's been limited to 65 games in 2024 because of adductor and hamstring issues after reaching double figures in homers each of his first five seasons.
Padres bolster bullpen, acquire Marlin closer Tanner Scott
The 30-year-old left-hander made his first All-Star team this year and has posted a 1.18 ERA with 18 saves in 44 appearances for the last-place Marlins, striking out 53 batters and issuing 27 walks in 45 2/3 innings.
Dodgers add Jack Flaherty, Kevin Kiermaier via trade
The 28-year-old Flaherty, who is from the Los Angeles area, was 7-5 with a 2.95 ERA in his first season with the Tigers. He had 133 strikeouts with a 0.96 WHIP and a .211 batting average against. - Kiermaier, 34, was hitting .195 with four homers and 18 RBI in 81 games for the Blue Jays. But the Dodgers value him for his defensive play. He's been in the big leagues for parts of 12 seasons with Tampa Bay and Toronto. He plans to retire at the end of the season.
