Sources: Twins cut draft pick for aiding opponent
The Minnesota Twins released minor league catcher Derek Bender on Thursday. Bender played 19 games for Fort Myers, hitting .200/.273/.333 with two home runs and eight RBIs. In three seasons at Coastal Carolina, he hit .326/.408/.571 with 32 home runs and 153 RBIs in 144 games.

A catcher and first baseman selected with the 188th pick this year, Bender signed for $297,500, slightly below the $320,800 slot for that selection. He will keep the entirety of his bonus, sources said.

MLB pairs with apparel company, to use helmet add for playoffs
MLB previously had helmet ads in select international games dating to at least 2000 and has allowed jersey ads since 2023. The general use of ads was agreed to by the players' association in the 2022 labor contract, and 23 of the 30 teams have jersey patch ads.[/url]

**********
Major League Soccer became the first of the major North American leagues to allow jersey ads in 2007. The NBA started selling sponsorship logos for the 2017-18 season, and the NHL launched helmet ads for the 2020-21 season and began jersey advertising the following season.

NEW AGE POSTING

Shohei Ohtani first 50/50 player in major league history

Twenty-seven days ago, Ohtani reached the 40/40 club with a walk-off grand slam. He then set a new benchmark, while on his way to potentially becoming the first full-time designated hitter to win an MVP award, with a six-hit, three-homer, two-steal performance in the Dodgers 20-4 rout' of the Mismi Marlins. A crowd of 15,548 was on hand to witness Ohtani's historic feat and serenaded him with a standing ovation, prompting him to spill out of the dugout for a curtain call. Ohtani acknowledged the fans, the pitcher who served up the home run and the Marlins' dugout -- including Schumaker, who didn't want to get in the way of history.

NEW AGE POSTING

Shohei Ohtani's historic 50/50 home run ball to be auctioned

The coveted Shohei Ohtani's 50/50 home run ball has been consigned to collectibles marketplace Goldin and bidding will begin Friday. The Los Angeles Dodgers star is the only player in baseball history to hit 50 home runs and steal 50 bases in the same season. He hit three home runs and stole two bases in the same game against the Miami Marlins on Sept. 19 to achieve baseball history. Fox Sports 640's Andy Slater reported that the Dodgers originally offered the fan who caught Ohtani's 50th home run ball $300,000. The Dodgers could not be reached for comment by ESPN. Goldin confirmed "there was an offer by the Dodgers and he turned it down." Extended bidding begins at 10 p.m. ET on Oct. 16. The current record paid for a baseball is the $3.05 million paid for Mark McGwire's 70th home run ball in 1999
