Oakland Athletics agree to sell their stake in Coliseum
The African American Sports & Entertainment Group and the A's affiliate, Coliseum Way Partners, announced the deal in a joint statement Monday. The development group struck a deal in May to purchase the other 50% ownership interest from the city of Oakland for $105 million.

The Coliseum and Arena were once home to the Oakland Raiders and Golden State Warriors. The NFL's Raiders moved to Las Vegas and the NBA's Warriors left for San Francisco in recent years, leaving professional sports fans in the East Bay Area desolate.
Biden hosts World Series champion Rangers at White House
The Texas Rangers visited the White House on Thursday to celebrate their 2023 World Series victory with President Joe Biden, who noted that the team was making a triumphant return to the city where its franchise was born. The event in the East Room began with the band playing an orchestral version of "Higher," the 1999 hit by Creed that became the 2023 Rangers' unofficial anthem. In the midst of their current season, the Rangers lost at home to the Astros on Wednesday and headed to New York after the ceremony for a series against the Yankees. It was the Rangers' first championship, but the fourth for their manager, Bruce Bochy, who previously visited the White House after winning titles with the San Francisco Giants in the 2010, 2012 and 2014 seasons -- and celebrating them all while Barack Obama was president.

Joey Votto, the long time Cincinnati Reds first baseman, retires
Across his 17 big league seasons in Cincinnati, Votto had a .294 batting average with 356 homers, 1,144 RBIs and a .409 on-base percentage in 2,056 games. He led the National League in on-base percentage seven times and was a Gold Glove winner in 2011.
**********
Votto became a free agent last fall after the end of a 12-year, $251.5 million contract with the Reds, who selected him in the second round of the 2002 amateur draft out of Richview Collegiate Institute in Toronto. Cincinnati declined Votto's $20 million option for 2024.
Reds sign former Red Sox 1b Dominic Smith to one-year deal
Smith, who spent the first six seasons of his career with the New York Mets, entered the day as a lifetime .247/.314/.405 hitter with 64 home runs in 683 games.
**********
Smith, 29, who held down Boston's first-base job for the majority of the season, was let go by the Red Sox after the return of Triston Casas, who had spent the previous four months on the injured list.

Rich Hill, 44, rejoins Red Sox with shot to pitch in 20th season
Rich Hill is back in the majors, nearly two decades and more than a dozen teams since he made his big league debut. The Boston Red Sox selected the 44-year-old lefty from Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday as Hill tries to add a little more history to a lengthy career. One outing in 2024 would make him the only active player to appear in a game in each of the past 20 seasons.
With an injury-depleted pitching staff, it's unclear how the Red Sox plan to utilize Hill and where he might fill in. He's willing to provide whatever the club needs, Cora said.
This is Hill's fourth stint with the Red Sox, who signed him to a minor league deal Aug. 16. Hill threw two scoreless innings in a start Friday for Worcester, striking out two, walking one and hitting a batter with a pitch. He has pitched for 13 major league teams, one short of Edwin Jackson's record. Hill, born in Boston, is 90-73 with a 4.01 ERA in 382 career games, including 248 starts. He also pitched for the Red Sox from 2010 to '12, then again in 2015 and 2022. He spent last season with the Pittsburgh Pirates and San Diego Padres.
Cardinals beat Yankees in first win in Bronx since. '64 World Series
It was the first victory for St. Louis in the Bronx since Tim McCarver hit a three-run homer in the 10th inning in Game 5 of the 1964 World Series and Bob Gibson pitched a complete game in a 5-2 win. The Cardinals improved to 1-7 at Yankee Stadium in the regular season.
Skidding White Sox drop 9th in a row, tie 1970 team with record 106 losses
According to ESPN Stats & Information, the White Sox's winning percentage of just .226 also puts them on pace to finish with the worst winning percentage in American League history, which would beat out the 1916 Philadelphia Athletics' record-low .235 winning percentage.
