Logan Sargeant ends 30-year wait for U.S. driver to score in F1

Williams rookie Logan Sargeant celebrated a surprise first point in Formula One on Sunday, thanks to the disqualifications of Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, and ended a 30-year wait for a U.S. driver to score. Sargeant was classified 10th at Austin's Circuit of the Americas after Mercedes' Hamilton was stripped of second place and Ferrari's Leclerc lost his sixth place when their cars failed post-race checks. The last U.S. driver before the 22-year-old Florida native to score in a grand prix was Michael Andretti with McLaren in 1993.

Ryan Blaney wins, secures spot in NASCAR Cup championship

Ryan Blaney was in tears back in May when the crowd chanted "Blaney! Blaney! Blaney" after he snapped a 59-race losing streak with his win at Charlotte Motor Speedway. He was so thrilled in that moment to get back to victory lane and rebuild his confidence after a winless 2022 season. Little did Blaney know at the time that his Coca-Cola 600 win jump-started his march into NASCAR's championship race. Blaney will race for his first Cup title after qualifying for the championship-deciding finale with a Sunday win at Martinsville Speedway. His third win of the season -- equaling his career best -- put him in the final four next week at Phoenix Raceway, where he will race Kyle Larson, Christopher Bell and William Byron for the Cup championship. Blaney and Byron will race Christopher Bell and Kyle Larson next Sunday at Phoenix Raceway, where the Cup championship will go to the highest-finishing driver.

Ryan Blaney gets hot at right time to win 2023 NASCAR Cup Series championship

Ryan Blaney spent the 2023 NASCAR Playoffs delivering clutch performances when it mattered most. And in the biggest race of his life, the 29-year-old gave his most memorable showing yet. Now, he is a Cup Series champion. Blaney claimed his first career Cup Series championship on Sunday at Phoenix Raceway in his first Championship 4 appearance. He outlasted fellow title hopefuls Christopher Bell, Kyle Larson and William Byron for the most prestigious prize in NASCAR.

Blaney had the lead among Championship 4 drivers when the caution flag flew for a Kyle Busch spin with 37 laps remaining. After losing that advantage on pit road, Blaney battled back on the ensuing restart to get past Byron and Larson, getting in front of them with 20 laps to go. Blaney held that position and finished second to race-winner Ross Chastain but first among the Championship 4 competitors. It’s the second consecutive season Team Penske took home NASCAR’s top prize, with Blaney following Joey Logano’s 2022 title conquest. It also gives Ford a sweep of championships following titles by Cole Custer and Ben Rhodes earlier this weekend.

It took Blaney eight full seasons, but he joins Brad Keselowski and Logano as the three drivers to win Cup titles for Roger Penske. In four previous trips to the Round of 8, Blaney came up empty-handed. This year, the No. 12 team stepped up at the right time, scoring a pair of playoff victories at Talladega and Martinsville en route to the championship. Unlike previous seasons when Blaney made mistakes in the Round of 8, he rose to the occasion in 2023. Across the three races at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Homestead-Miami Speedway and Martinsville Speedway in the Round of 8, the No. 12 team posted an average finish of 3.0. He had an incredible run at Homestead by leading 53 laps and finishing second, then stamped his name into the Championship 4 in a dominant second-half performance at Martinsville, tallying his third victory of the season.

Romain Grosjean joins Juncos Hollinger for '24 IndyCar season

Romain Grosjean will get an opportunity with a third IndyCar team in 2024 after Juncos Hollinger Racing announced Thursday that he would drive in its No. 77 car next season. Grosjean, 37, had driven for the now-named Andretti Global in 2022 and 2023, picking up three second-place finishes, including two in back-to-back races last season. But his tenure with Andretti was marred by inconsistent results, crashes and conflicts with other Andretti drivers and team personnel. He finished 13th in the IndyCar standings each of the past two seasons. Grosjean will drive alongside Agustin Canapino in the No. 78 car for JHR. As a rookie, Canapino had a few on-track incidents with Ilott, leading to massive fan blowback and death threats to Ilott from Argentine supporters. Ilott was harassed online following September's season finale for late-race contact with Canapino.
