McLaren seeks at least $23 million in damages from Alex Palou

McLaren Racing is suing IndyCar champion Alex Palou for at least $23 million to recoup costs the team says it lost when the driver reneged on the contract he signed to join the team. Palou, a 26-year-old Spaniard, guaranteed that he had "no outstanding obligation under any contract or agreement" that would keep him from joining McLaren after the IndyCar season ended, according to the Sept. 29 filing in the High Court of Justice Business and Property Courts of England and Wales Commercial Court. The Associated Press viewed the 17-page filing Tuesday. Palou and Ganassi entered mediation and a resolution was reached a year ago in which Palou would drive for Ganassi in 2023 but could do F1 work for McLaren when it did not interfere with IndyCar. He was able to participate in a practice session last season for McLaren, tested for the F1 team both on track and in a simulator, and was the reserve driver for McLaren at F1's Miami Grand Prix in May.

Andretti wins FIA approval of bid to enter F1 as 11th team

Formula One's governing body, the FIA, on Monday backed a bid by American Michael Andretti, son of 1978 world champion Mario, to enter a new 11th team subject to approval by the commercial rights holders. The International Automobile Federation (FIA) said in a statement that Andretti Formula Racing LLC should progress to the next stage of the application process and commercial discussions with Formula One Management. Liberty Media-owned Formula One said separately it would carry out its own assessment. The FIA started a formal application process in February, seeking to identify one or more new teams interested in joining in 2025, 2026 or 2027. "The FIA is obliged to approve applications that comply with the Expressions of Interests application requirements and we have adhered to that procedure in deciding that Andretti Formula Racing LLC's application would proceed to the next stage of the application process," said FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem.

Marc Marquez will join Gresini Racing for the 2024 season, the Ducati satellite team said Thursday, days after Honda announced that the six-time MotoGP world champion would be leaving the Japanese manufacturer at the end of the 2023 campaign. Honda and Marquez agreed to terminate their four-year contract a year early, ending an 11-year association and clearing the way for the 30-year-old to switch to a Ducati machine, the dominant force in MotoGP over the past two seasons. "I'm excited with this new challenge. It wasn't an easy decision because it's a big change in every way," Marquez said in a statement. "But sometimes in life it's important to get out of the comfort zone and put yourself through the paces in order to keep growing."
