Former All-Pro RB David Johnson retires after 8 NFL seasons

David Johnson, who amassed 6,876 yards from scrimmage and 58 touchdowns in eight seasons, announced his retirement from the NFL on Sunday. Johnson, who last played in a regular-season game in 2022, for the New Orleans Saints, made the announcement on instagram. The Arizona Cardinals selected Johnson out of Northern Iowa in the third round of the 2015 draft. Two games into his pro career, his jersey and cleats were sent to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, after he became the first player in NFL history to score a rushing touchdown, receiving touchdown and kickoff return touchdown within the first two games of a career.

In his second season, Johnson led the NFL in both yards from scrimmage (2,118) and total touchdowns (20) en route to being selected first team All-Pro and earning the only Pro Bowl selection of his career. Johnson ran for 1,239 yards that season, the only time he surpassed 1,000 rushing yards in his career. He finished his career with 4,071 yards rushing and 2,805 yards receiving. Of his 58 touchdowns, 39 came rushing, 18 receiving and one on a kickoff return. He had 33 rushing touchdowns with the Cardinals, tied for third in franchise history.

Hall of Fame center Jim Otto, 'Mr. Raider,' dies at 86

Jim Otto, a Pro Football Hall of Fame center whose iconic No. 00 jersey anchored the middle of the Oakland Raiders' offensive line for 15 seasons, has died at age 86. The Raiders, who moved from Oakland to Las Vegas in 2020, announced his death Sunday night, calling him "The Original Raider." The cause of death was not immediately known. Otto was the dominant center of his era -- many would argue of any era -- as he had a singular goal: "Never will they kick my butt." Indeed, Otto did most of the kicking in a 15-year career that never saw him miss a game. From the AFL's initial season of 1960 through the 1970 AFL-NFL merger and his retirement following the 1974 season, Otto started 210 straight regular-season games, 223 including the playoffs, and was a Pro Bowler 12 times, a first-team All-Pro selection 10 times. He was known later in life as "Pops" in the Raiders organization.

He was the only All-AFL center in the league's entire existence from 1960 to 1969, and he was one of only three players who played in all 140 AFL regular-season games (George Blanda and Gino Cappelletti were the others). In his 15-year career, the Raiders won seven division titles and were AFL champions in 1967, losing to the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl II. Otto later returned to the Raiders to work in the front office. Otto was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1980, his first year of eligibility. In 2019, he was named to the NFL 100 all-time team. He was undrafted by the NFL but turned himself into the face of a generation of AFL offensive linemen with a grudge against the establishment. Yes, as the team called him, the "Original Raider."

Chiefs gift helmet to President Biden during White House visit

President Joe Biden saw it as an omen for his upcoming reelection attempt that the Kansas City Chiefs were back at the White House on Friday, being honored as Super Bowl champions for the second year in a row. Biden noted that the Chiefs were the NFL's first repeat champions in 20 years. He paused and then said, "Back to back. I like that." The Chiefs seemed at home on a sunny, warm afternoon. They arrived at the ceremony on the South Lawn via dual staircases from the White House, with wide receiver Rashee Rice leading the way in one of the lines. Several players, including Rice, paused for photos at the podium in the White House briefing room. During the ceremony, Biden mentioned the shooting after the Super Bowl championship parade in February and the role that many players and coaches had in providing comfort to fans.

One league source indicated that the Falcons' alleged transgressions are considered more significant, and the discipline is expected to be more severe for Atlanta. Colts' NFLPA rep Ryan Kelly: 18 games would be 'too many games'

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell's vision of adding an 18th regular-season game to the schedule will certainly be met with resistance from the NFL Players Association. Kelly's comments likely foreshadow what will be significant pushback from the union, which reluctantly agreed to the expansion from 16 to 17 games in 2021. Goodell did not put a timetable on his goal of migrating to 18 games. The current collective bargaining agreement between players and owners is in place through the 2030 season, but it can be amended or renegotiated. Any change to the length of the season would need to be collectively bargained.

The move to 17 games was a contentious issue among players during the most recent CBA negotiations, with the contract ultimately passing narrowly with 51.5% of players voting in favor. Kelly also addressed a related conversation. The NFLPA has proposed eliminating offseason workouts in favor of an earlier report date ahead of training camp and a ramp-up period leading into camp. The union's position is that the current structure of offseason workouts is not ideal and restricts players' ability to control their own offseason periods. Currently, NFL teams conduct voluntary workouts through April and May with mandatory minicamps typically coming in early June before training camps begin in late July.

Falcons forfeit draft pick, fined for tampering; Eagles cleared

The Atlanta Falcons on Thursday were docked a fifth-round pick in the 2025 draft and fined $250,000 for violating the NFL's anti-tampering policy related to free agent signings, while the league cleared the Philadelphia Eagles of tampering while signing running back Saquon Barkley this offseason. The tampering violations for the Falcons were a result of "improper contact" with three players prior to their official unrestricted free agency period: quarterback Kirk Cousins, wide receiver Darnell Mooney and tight end Chris Woemer. In addition to the team penalties, the NFL fined Falcons general manager Terry Fontenot $50,000.

Teams are allowed to speak only with agents during the 52-hour free agent negotiating window after the start of the new league year and cannot speak directly with players -- unless the player represents himself and doesn't have an agent. Cousins is represented by Mike McCartney, who had announced on social media two days prior to the start of the new league year that the quarterback had agreed to terms with the Falcons.

The NFL did not discover sufficient evidence to support a finding that the anti-tampering policy was violated by the Eagles in the lead-up to signing Barkley. Shortly after Barkley agreed to terms with the Eagles on a three-year, $37.75 million contract in March, his former coach at Penn State, James Franklin, suggested general manager Howie Roseman spoke to Barkley directly during the "legal tampering" period to sell him on playing for Philadelphia, which has a large Nittany Lions fan base. "In coming to this conclusion, the league reviewed phone logs, text messages and other documents related to Philadelphia's free agency and decision to sign Barkley," the league said in a statement. "The NFL also interviewed several members of the organization, including Howie Roseman and Nick Sirianni, as well as Barkley and Penn State head coach James Franklin. As with every review, should new evidence be uncovered, the league may reopen the investigation."

Chiefs receive Super Bowl rings, set sights on three-peat

On his way to collect his third Super Bowl championship ring, Patrick Mahomes already was thinking about winning another one. The Chiefs made more than 400 rings to distribute for this championship, their second straight and third in the past five years. Each one contains 529 diamonds, 38 rubies and 14.8 carats worth of gems, according to the rings' maker, Jostens. Among the features: a display celebrating "Tom & Jerry," the Chiefs' name for the play on which they scored the touchdown in overtime that allowed them to beat the San Francisco 49ers 25-22. The play, on which Mahomes threw a 3-yard scoring pass to Mecole Hardman, is diagrammed on the ring in coach Andy Reid's writing. The Chiefs have had other celebrations of last season's title, including their championship parade days after winning Super Bowl LVIII and the White House visit with President Joe Biden two weeks ago. To the Chiefs, the ring ceremony ended their 2023 season.

Kansas governor signs to offer Chiefs, Royals stadium help

Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly signed legislation Friday enabling the state to lure the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs and Major League Baseball's Royals away from neighboring Missouri by helping the teams pay for new stadiums. Kelly's action came three days after the Republican-led Legislature approved the measure with bipartisan supermajorities -- an unusually quick turnaround that signals how urgently Kansas officials consider making the offers. Missouri officials have argued that discussions about building new stadiums are still in the early stages. They said construction of a new one typically takes about three years and pointed out that the lease on the existing complex that includes the teams' side-by-side stadiums doesn't end until January 2031. The Kansas-Missouri border splits the 2.3 million-resident Kansas City area, with about 60% of the people living on the Missouri side.
