Dolphins, QB Tua Tagovailoa reach 4-year, $212.4M extension

The Dolphins and quarterback Tua Tagovailoa have agreed to a four-year, $212.4 million extension, the largest in franchise history, his agency told ESPN's Adam Schefter on Friday. The $53.1 million average annual value of the contract briefly placed Tagovailoa third among the NFL's highest-paid quarterbacks, behind the Jacksonville Jaguars' Trevor Lawrence and Cincinnati Bengals Joe Burrow. Tagovailoa's deal includes $167 million guaranteed, eighth most among quarterbacks.

Since Dan Marino retired before the 2000 season, the Dolphins have struggled at quarterback. Twenty-five players, including Tagovailoa, have started at least one game for the Dolphins since the turn of the century. Only one of those players, 2012 first-round pick Ryan Tannehill, had signed a multiyear extension with the team. Tagovailoa turned in a career year in 2023, however, leading the NFL with 4,624 passing yards and setting a career high with 29 touchdown passes. He became the first Dolphins quarterback to lead the league in passing yards since Marino in 1992, and his total passing yards were the third most in a season in Dolphins history, behind only Marino (5,084 yards in 1984; 4,746 in 1986).

Sources: Jordan Love signs 4-year, $220M deal with Packers

The Packers on Friday agreed to terms with Jordan Love on a four-year, $220 million contract, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter. The $55 million average per year matches the Jacksonville Jaguars' Trevor Lawrence and the Cincinnati Bengals' Joe Burrow for the highest in league history. The deal, negotiated by David Mulugheta and Andrew Kessler of Athletes First and announced by the Packers on Saturday, also includes a record $75 million signing bonus and $155 million in new full guarantees, sources said. Love, 25, is now contractually tied to Green Bay through the 2028 season and scheduled to become a free agent again at age 30.

Love threw for 4,159 yards with 32 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in the 2023 regular season. He was one of four quarterbacks last season to rank in the top 10 in passing touchdowns (second behind Dak Prescott, passing yards (seventh) and touchdown-to-interception ratio (seventh). Love did something neither Aaron Rodgers nor Brett Favre did in their first seasons as the starter in Green Bay: make the playoffs. Love started all 17 games, and after a 2-5 beginning, the Packers finished 9-8 to make the playoffs. He led them to a wild-card win over the Dallas Cowboys in which he threw three touchdowns and zero interceptions before a divisional round loss at the San Francisco 49ers, which ended with a Love interception on the final drive.

Judge rules for NFL, overturns $4.7B 'Sunday Ticket' verdict

A federal judge has overturned a jury's $4.7 billion verdict in the class-action lawsuit filed by "Sunday Ticket" subscribers against the NFL and has granted judgment to the NFL. U.S. District Judge Philip Gutierrez ruled Thursday that the testimony of two witnesses for the subscribers had flawed methodologies and should have been excluded. "Without the testimonies of Dr. [Daniel] Rascher and Dr. [John] Zona, no reasonable jury could have found class-wide injury or damages," Gutierrez wrote at the end of his 16-page ruling. In a statement released Thursday night, the league said it was "grateful" for the judge's ruling.

The jury on June 27 awarded $4.7 billion in damages to residential and commercial subscribers after it ruled the NFL violated antitrust laws in distributing out-of-market Sunday afternoon games on a premium subscription service. The lawsuit covered 2.4 million residential subscribers and 48,000 businesses in the United States who paid for the package on DirecTV of out-of-market games from the 2011 through 2022 seasons. Since damages can be tripled under federal antitrust laws, the NFL could have been liable for $14,121,779,833.92. It is not the first time the NFL has won a judgment as matter of law in this case, which has been going on since 2015.

Jets' Tarik Cohen ends comeback attempt, retires from NFL

Former All-Pro kick returner Tarik Cohen, once regarded as one of the most electrifying players in the NFL, informed the New York Jets on Thursday that he's retiring from football. The Jets placed Cohen on the reserve/retired list Thursday afternoon. The news came only two days after Cohen, 29, spoke enthusiastically about his comeback bid. He signed with the Jets on May 29, hoping to revive his career after not having played in a regular-season game since 2020 due to major injuries. Cohen was a first-team All-Pro and Pro Bowl selection for the Chicago Bears in 2018, when he led the NFL in punt return yardage (411) and amassed a career-high 1,169 yards from scrimmage. The 5-foot-6 speedster suffered a devastating knee injury in 2020. His comeback was delayed in 2022 by a torn Achilles, which occurred while working out on an Instagram livestream. The Bears made him a fourth-round pick in 2017 out of North Carolina A&T. He finished his career with 2,676 yards from scrimmage and 14 touchdowns, along with 985 yards on punt returns (one touchdown) and 628 yards on kickoff returns. He played his entire career with the Bears, spending time last season on the Carolina Panthers' practice squad.

NFL's new kickoff rules get mixed reviews at Hall of Fame Game

The first two kickoff returns under the NFL's new rules looked a lot like kickoffs of the past during the Chicago Bears 21-17 weather shorten win over the Houston Texans in Thursday's Hall of Fame Game. The NFL overhauled its old kickoff rules this offseason in hopes of promoting more returns. Of the eight kickoffs that took place Thursday, only one resulted in a touchback. That happened 73% of the time last season, which was the highest touchback rate since 1970. The debut of the new rules came with two illegal formation penalties - one for each team - for players leaving the set up zone early (players are not allowed to move until the ball is touched by the returner or makes contract with the ground).
