Star Trek: Picard

The Question

If he was an android why would he be building himself an android body?

Maybe he's like Sodey Popsha and doesn't know he already is one. Yet. Juliana Tainer didn't know she was one, either.

Is this real life?
I think I know how it's going to end, the master robot race will arrive to kill all organics, and Picard will point at the borg and say they are part organic and half synthetic, and if they kill them, they are killing their own. So to save the universe Picard has to embrace his time as a borg, and that ends up saving everyone.

That actually makes sense so it’s not going to happen.

Definitely the worst episode of the season, IMHO. And next week looks like a Discovery-style explosion fest of an ending so... ugh. We'll see, though.

I know i keep saying it (or I said it once before) but it's directed by Akiva Goldsman again, who directed the Discovery explosion fest season one finale...

My thoughts on Ep's 8 and 9 late to the party again.

After my moan about the previous episodes, I thought episode 8 was a LOT better. It's still plagued with a number of issues (Seven plugging in...) but it was a character piece that actually went somewhere, Picard actually felt like Picard here! The Rios hologram troupe gets pushed way past the point of silliness but he's a good actor so it was fun to watch and even Raffi was bearable in this one. My hopes were raised and I was looking forward to the next episode!

Silly me!

The planet of the robots felt like something from TNG season one. Maybe that was on purpose but I didn't like it!

My first fucking thought as well.

Seriously why is Seven of Nine in this show.

Her character hardly resembles Seven of Nine AT ALL so there is that!

Soong has a fucking never before mentioned son WHO LOOKS EXACTLY LIKE HIM AND HAS THE EXACT SAME JOB. I know Enterprise did the same thing but that was pretty goofy too.

This was absolutely atrocious. Just when you think this show can't get any more on the nose it surprises you. This is just inconceivable levels of bullshit. The secret son? REALLY? It makes NO sense. It's not just a completely terrible way to shoehorn Brent in again it really cheapens Data and Lore's backstory.

As does the fucking commune of evil hippy androids with absolutely God-awful makeup. Data's makeup looked fine 30 years ago. How is it so shit here? That's a minor issue though when you actually take a minute to think about the plot. Data and Lore were unique. Incredibly complex and original creations that were technologically ahead of their time even in the 24th century. Dhaj and Soji being created from Data's positronic brain by a man that had spent his life studying (and working with Data) was acceptable (lol remember Maddox) but now there is a fucking town full of them that was built by the secret son of Soong and Maddox on a secret planet and they're capable of full emotional range? AND they're evil? What?

This episode was really, really bad. It's frustrating because you can see the potential at a good few points during the season but its been squandered for a terrible payoff. Don't see how they can fix this mess to be honest. I've never read any of Chabon's work, apparently, he's highly regarded. Could have fooled me.

Maybe the son is actually Lore or something but that would be extremely dumb as well (although still less so than what we got)

I'll start with some positive points: it was a bit better than last week's because Picard actually got to do stuff and Patrick Stewart had some good moments. Riker in uniform in the Captain's chair definitely made me feel things and Frakes was great with the eight lines he had. Shame the Starfleet ships looked ugly as shit. I mean MAYBE that was due to the Coronavirus and they didn't finish the episode on time, because seriously it was the worst looking CGI of the series. Remember when DS9 would do fleet battles with like forty ships and it looked cool because they were all different but here it was just the same bad ship design copy and pasted two hundred times. AGAIN could be a post production issue. Still looked bad.

Music was good.

But yeah I totally didn't buy Soji suddenly trying to wipe out all organic life (that's what we were told would happen, right?) and then being talked out of it by Picard saying "no that's bad!" Soong was an asshole last week who was fine with calling the robot overseers and destroying all organic life...at the end of the episode he's a nice guy who saves Picard's life and we're cool with him?

What even happened to Narek? Did he just disappear?

Seven and Raffi are randomly holding hands at the end. Did they even have any scenes together before that?

Agnes totally gets away with murder just because she's cute? But hey she's got a new boyfriend now after murdering her lover a few days ago, let's be happy for her.

Data's face looked weird. The idea that he's been stuck in a simulation for thirty years is kind of interesting but it all felt really rushed. Like maybe they should have done the big CGI battle last week and had this episode all set in Data's head or something. Anyway, he's dead now! Again. He didn't ask Picard how Geordi is doing so fuck him.

Oh yeah, Picard's a robot now. A robot who looks exactly the same as Picard and will age and die like Picard so let's never speak of it again.

I'll post about the season as a whole after more people comment maybe.

Yeah, I, uh.

Um.

It was handy that the androids made a magic box that could do whatever the plot wanted, except when it couldn't.

If they had to have all the Starfleet ships look exactly the same, couldn't they have at least picked a good design to copy a hundred times?

Weird that Starfleet would muster a fleet of like 100 identical Starships so fast for them to sit there for like 5 minutes before leaving again.

Cool that the big mysterious ancient robot threat that had been built up all season was just a bunch of robot tentacles that didn't do anything.

Oh wow they killed Picard off even though it was obvious they were going to make him a robot. No, sure, let's have like 5 minutes of characters I don't really care about looking sad before they reverse it all and none of it matters.

Like remember when Nemesis killed off Data but it was OK because they ripped off Wrath of Khan and Data had put his Katra in B4? Well they managed to rip off that ripping off except somehow do it worse??

Weird that the last thing we would see of very popular character Data would be Picard removing his USB drives.

Cool that everyone forgot that Anges is a literal murderer.

Why did they lift the android ban? Was it because a bunch of androids almost killed everyone, but then decided not to? Like there wasn't ever any concrete proof that the attack on Mars was Tal Shiar, right? I can't remember.

If I were Picard I'd be kind of mad that I got a new robot body that still looked like I was 94 and not like Tom Hardy or something.

I liked how lots of people were predicting that Dr. Soong Jr would turn out to be a robot or Lore or something because the idea of Dr. Soong actually having a son didn't seem to make any sense but actually he was just a human and it doesn't make any sense.

Cool that they got Seven of Nine back again to be in a bad fight scene and then do nothing except have weirdly personal conversations with people she's never met.

Weird that the Zhat Vash were right all along. Cool moral for a Star Trek story to have, that the racist group of zealots who wanted to commit genocide were actually justified. What will they do now? Like, literally their entire order was based around what happened in this episode and it didn't come to anything.

Like remember how it turned out that one of the top Starfleet officers was in fact a romulan spy all along and no one really seems to care about that?? Like, she was head of security!!! And she was a Romulan!!!! And they're just like "Well guess you won't be at the office party now but have a safe trip back to Romulus!".

Seriously though they had so many fucking starships there and they all looked like hot ass.

Agnes: Wow this magical devices does anything! It even fix things that are impossible to fix! I don't know how I know that because it happened in a scene I wasn't in, but I do!

Picard: Help my brain is broken and can't be fixed. Is there anything you can do to stop me dying?

Agnes: No sorry.

I needed a lie down after that finale.

Wacky and Tom have said pretty much everything I was going to say. It... wasn't good.

I'll add this though: Why is Data stuck in a simulation for the last 20 something years when you can just make a new body and resurrect anyone whenever you like? You think it would be even easier to do than with Picard. Data is stuck in a gloomy study being suicidal for no reason!

So yeah, Robot Picard...

WHY. He looks exactly the same and is still a feeble 94-year-old and will die soon anyway even though anyone can basically be given youth and vigour again! I get the not wanting to be immortal but it's still dumb as fuck. I'm convinced that Michael Chabon watched The Schizoid Man high as a kite before coming up with this tripe.

Starfleet has the sexiest damn spaceships in ALL of Sci-Fi and that's what we get? They were horrible. They could have simply phoned John Eaves and Rick Sternbach up! It's not that complicated!

The whole A.I threat just makes me want to play Mass Effect again where the same fucking plotline is actually handled well.

The Zhat Vash finally have their target in sight. After thousands of years, their sole purpose is now moments away...

"Fire on my..."

"Wait... let Picard talk for 5 minutes."

"We're being bamboozled!"

"Fir..."

"Wait..."

"Let's engage the space flowers!"

Jesus, I was rooting for them to just blow the damn compound up it took so long.

There is so much wrong with this episode I'm starting to feel there were extensive reshoots and trouble with production? The editing and pace have been horrific for a while now (Picard literally meets and says goodbye to Elnor FOUR times in four episodes) the show is all over the place.

I try and balance my disappointment out with some positives but they were few and far between here. I mean, Riker is always cool and space orchids were at least a bit original? That's all I've got...

Oh yeah, Seven is a lesbian now and is going to have sexy lesbian space sex with someone she has had no former chemistry with because she's had no fucking screen time with...

Star Trek: Picard has achieved the impossible. The IMPOSSIBLE. They've made me miss Chakotay.

I'm wondering if a lot was cut from the episode? Like a scene where Seven and Raffi actually met each other. Maybe they decided to change the story at the last minute. It fucking felt that way!

Also, since no one ever answered it to my satisfaction, HOW DID DATA MANAGE TO PAINT SOJI WHEN HE WAS ON THE ENTERPRISE-D? Or is the idea that Maddox and Shitty Soong based her appearance on the painting (but the painting was in Picard's private vault?)?

The first half was pretty irrelevant, so much stuff on the screen it was like looking into a coliderscope someone had thrown up in.

The federation ships looked like someone too a galactica model and just rewrapped it over a basic shape.

That said the death scenes really moved me, maybe it's because I have been considering my own mortality a lot this week.

The secret son? REALLY? It makes NO sense.

Not least of all because Noonien Soong had to be at least a hundred years old when we saw him "in person" 30 years ago. So, again, if he had a son, with whom? Whoopty Boopty Soong can't be a natural kid, not least of all because there's no way a natural son would look and sound identical to the father. So I'm still going with Whoopty Boopty Soong being another synthetic, whether he be a mechanical one like Data or an organic one like... Picard. That's gonna take some getting used to, ain't it?
