Is history stacked against Sam Darnold's success? Panthers don't think so

History may not seem like it's on the side of Carolina Panthers quarterback Sam Darnold, who was acquired in a trade with the New York Jets last week. It shows quarterbacks selected with high draft picks that struggle with their first team continue to struggle in their second, or even third, stop. It shows the early damage done mentally, physically or both makes it unlikely that quarterback will lead his next team to a Super Bowl. The NFL landscape is littered with college stars such as Ryan Leaf, JaMarcus Russell and Heath Shuler who have walked in Darnold’s cleats, entering the league with lofty expectations and leaving with unfulfilled dreams. There are some notable exceptions, though.

Steve Young, after starting his career in the USFL, went 3-16 in his first two NFL seasons in Tampa Bay before becoming a Hall of Famer with San Francisco. And even that came after the first pick of the 1984 supplemental draft was a backup to Joe Montana with the 49ers for four seasons.

Carolina Panthers trade QB Teddy Bridgewater to Denver Broncos

The Carolina Panthers have traded quarterback Teddy Bridgewater to the Denver Broncos for a sixth-round pick in the 2021 NFL draft, it was announced Wednesday. The Panthers will pay $7 million to Bridgewater; the Broncos will pay him $3 million, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter. "Acquiring Teddy Bridgewater adds competition, experience and a strong veteran presence to our quarterback room," Broncos general manager George Paton said in a statement. "He's a talented player and leader who's had success in this league in a number of different situations." The trade will not take the Broncos, who have the No. 9 overall pick, out of the market for a quarterback in Thursday's draft, a source told ESPN. Bridgewater, who signed a three-year, $63 million deal with the Panthers before last season, threw for 3,733 yards in 2020, with 15 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. By renegotiating the final two years of Bridgewater's deal, the Panthers will save $6 million in 2021 and $26 million in 2022, a source told ESPN's David Newton.

Bank of America Stadium transitioning to artificial turf before Carolina Panthers' 2021 season

Bank of America Stadium will transition from natural grass to artificial turf in time for the Carolina Panthers preseason schedule in August, leaving the NFL's 32 teams with 16 grass venues. The decision to switch to FieldTurf was made to guarantee a consistent surface for not only the Panthers but also other events. Those events include the Charlotte Football Club of Major League Soccer, which will begin playing at BOA in 2022, college football games and concerts. There could be up to 30 professional sports events alone played at the stadium every year.Tepper Sports & Entertainment vice president and chief operating officer Mark Hart said it would be a "heavy lift'' to have continued with natural grass, which the stadium has used since the Panthers played their first game there in 1996.

Panthers gain an equivalent of an extra 5th-round pick in second-round draft pick deal with the Bears. The picks Carolina received were worth 23% more than what it gave up. But in Teven Jenkins, Bears get a player the Draft Day Predictor thought had an 85% chance to be selected in Round 1.

The Carolina Panthers 2021 draft class after two rounds: 1.(8) CB Jaycee Horn, South Carolina; 2. (59) WR Terrace Marshall Jr., LSU; 3. (70) OT Brady Christensen, BYU; 3. (83) TE Tommy Tremble, Notre Dame. Remaining picks: 4 - 109; 5 - 158; 6 - 193, 204, 222.

Matt Rhule is the first head coach in the Common Draft Era (since 1967) to use his first eight career draft picks on defense.

The Panthers have two picks tonight -- 39 (2nd), 73 (3rd) -- as the NFL draft continues. A few players at position of need to keep an eye on: OT Teven Jenkins, Oklahoma State; OT Liam Eichenburg, Notre Dame; OT Dillon Randunz, N.Dakota State; WR Elijah Moore, Ole Miss; WR Terrace Marshall, Jr., LSU; TE Hunter Long, Boston College; DT Christian Barmore, Alabama; C Landon Dickerson, Alabama. Wouldn't totally rule out North Carolina RB Javonte Williams even though there are bigger needs.

Carolina Panthers rookie CB Jaycee Horn honors Kobe Bryant, chooses No. 8 jersey

First-round pick Jaycee Horn became the first member of the Carolina Panthers to take advantage of the NFL's new relaxed rule on jersey numbers. After being selected with the eighth overall pick in the NFL draft, Horn selected No. 8 -- at least in part to honor NBA legend Kobe Bryant. Horn announced his selection Saturday night with a picture of himself in a black No. 8 jersey and a tweet that said, "New beginnings. #8Ball #RIPKobe." The NFL recently changed the rules to give players more freedom in selecting jersey numbers. Cornerbacks, for example, no longer are banned from single-digit numbers and can choose from Nos. 1-49. The Panthers don't have a great history of players wearing No. 8. The most significant was punter Brad Nortman, who wore the number from 2012 to '15.

Former Alabama guard Deonte Brown checked in for the Senior Bowl where the Panthers coached at 364 pounds. He checked in for Carolina's rookie mini-camp at 347 pounds. Coach Matt Rhule said the team dietician is monitoring the weight of the sixth-round pick and they haven't come up with an ideal weight yet. “I don't think he's ever going to be a 310-pound guy,'' Rhule said.

The Panthers open their rookie mini-camp today with four of their 11 draft picks unsigned. Those are Jaycee Horn (1st-round), Terrace Marshall Jr. (2nd), and Brady Christensen (3rd) and Tommy Tremble (3rd). The mini-camp roster consists of 34 players total.

Perhaps the most interesting jersey choice for Panthers' rookies, outside of first-round pick Jaycee Horn who chose 8 to honor Kobe Bryant, was the number chosen by second-round pick Terrace Marshall Jr. He gets 88, the number that was synonymous with TE Greg Olsen. The last wideout to wear that was Karl Hankton (200-2006). TE Walter Rasby wore it as well from '95-97 if you're into team history.

Jersey numbers announced for Panthers for rookie mini-camp that begins on Friday. Here are the numbers of those drafted: CB Jaycee Horn (8), WR Shi Smith (12), CB Keith Taylor Jr. (28), RB Chuba Hubbard (30), LS Thomas Fletcher (46), OT Brady Christensen (70),DT Phil Hoskins (71), OG Deonte Brown (77), TE Tommy Tremble (82), WR Terrace Marshall Jr. (88), DT Daviyon Nixon (94).

Why young Panthers need offseason work with Sam Darnold
Rhule doesn’t believe the young roster is a recipe for disaster. Statistics support him. According to research by Elias Sports Bureau, of the six youngest teams entering the previous three seasons, the Panthers had the sixth-youngest roster in the league

Yes, Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey checked on the price to change from No. 22 to No. 5. Sources told me it would be more than $1 million. As for actually changing to his college number, McCaffrey said: “It won't be this year. We'll see. I haven't made my mind up. That's a number that means a lot to me.''

Christian McCaffrey on new Panthers QB Sam Darnold: “He's very sharp. That's something that is very exciting early. His decision making has been good. Sam's very talented. He's smart. He knows where to go with the ball. I love how everyone is responding to his urgency.''

Panthers coach Matt Rhule said he just wants QB Sam Darnold to "get better'' as he does every player. Darnold has a lot to learn about the new system. He also still has moving in to do. He's still trying to buy all the furniture he needs. He doesn't have a bed frame yet, so his mattress is on the floor. He has half of a sectional couch.

Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey on his health after missing 13 games last season: “I feel good. I feel really good. I'm back to 100 percent and feel ready to roll.''
