Eason efficient, Ehlinger shines late as Colts beat Panther

Ravens tie NFL record with 19th straight preseason win, 20-3

Oddly enough, after Panthers quarterback Sam Darnold the most intriguing thing in tonight's preseason finale against Pittsburgh will be the competition at kicker between Joey Slye and newly-signed Ryan Santoso. You can't miss Santoso, maybe the biggest kicker in the NFL at 6-5, 258.

Impressions from the Panthers' preseason finale, a 34-9 victory over the Steelers: X QB Sam Darnold was efficient, completing 19 of 25 pass attempts for 162 yards and 2 TDS -- against Pittsburgh's second- and third-teamers. X The starting offensive line held up well, but again against backups. X Ryan Santoso appears to have won the kicking competition against Joey Slye. He was 2-for-2 on field goals and 3-for-3 on PATS. Slye was 0-for-1 on field goals and 1-for-1 on PATs.

Panthers coach Matt Rhule on players seemingly comforting struggling kicker Joey Slye on the sideline: "He's a wonderful person. He's worked really hard. He's made a lot of kicks and he's done a lot of good things. He's just in one of those places right now where he's struggling. When you struggle at other positions people don't know it. When you struggle at that position it's magnified.''

Panthers deep snapper J.J. Jansen didn't want to get into what he said to kicker Joey Slye on the sideline Friday night. However, you can tell he deeply feels for what Slye is going through with his kicking struggles that appear to have cost him his job to Ryan Santoso. "The last couple of weeks have been not what we all had hoped,'' Jansen said.

Carolina Panthers make former XFL star PJ Walker backup to QB Sam Darnold, release 2019 third-round pick Will Grier
Walker was 1-0 last season, throwing for 258 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions in a 20-0 victory over Detroit. Grier remains a possibility for the practice squad, according to a league source. The Panthers also could add a third quarterback for the roster or practice squad.

Carolina Panthers release PK Joey Slye in favor of Ryan Santoso
The 6-foot-5, 258-pound Santoso was so impressive in his Carolina debut that he left little doubt he would replace Slye, who couldn't come out of his preseason slump.

The Panthers announced 12 practice squad signings of players that were in camp. They are: CB Rashaan Melvin, C Sam Tecklenburg, WR C.J. Saunders, RB Spencer Brown, S Kenny Robinson, RB Rodney Smith, WR Keith Kirkwood, WR Omar Bayless, OT Aaron Monteiro, DE Frank Herron, S Jalen Julius. TE Stephen Sullivan. It also has been reported Carolina will sign former Jets backup QB James Morgan.

Panthers RB Christian McCaffrey talked a lot about QB Sam Darnold on Thursday, down to their college days, McCaffrey at Stanford and Darnold at Southern Cal. "I think we won both those games.'' McCaffrey said. Said Darnold, "When I was playing, we never lost.'' Both were right, sort of. In 2015-16 when their careers overlapped Stanford went 3-0. Darnold didn't start and played in just one of the three. In 2017, when Darnold started and McCaffrey was an NFL rookie Southern Cal went 2-0.

The Panthers tweaked their practice squad on Thursday, officially signing quarterback James Morgan, adding wide receiver Aaron Parker and releasing cornerback Rashaan Melvin. They are at 13 with three opening remaining.

The Panthers claimed fourth-year running back Royce Freeman off waivers from Denver. They released RB Trenton Cannon. Freeman has 1,187 yards rushing and 409 receiving the past three years. He brings experience behind Christian McCaffrey that was lacking.

Should the Panthers go with Dennis Daley in Sunday's opener with starting right guard John Miller on the COVID-19 list the good news is Daley has starting experience. He started three games in 2020, two at right guard and one at left tackle. He started nine games at left tackle in 2019 after being selected in the sixth round out of South Carolina.

Panthers coach Matt Rhule feels "really comfortable'' with Dennis Daley starting Sunday's opener against the Jets at right guard for John Miller, who on Monday went on the COVID-19 list and was ruled out for the game.

Sam Darnold focused on second chance with Panthers, not revenge versus Jets

Unlike many players who go against their former team for the first time, Darnold is not out to prove the Jets made a mistake in trading him. He’s not directing blame at former coach Adam Gase or anyone for him going 13-25 as the starter. Carolina Panthers quarterback Sam Darnold can’t think of any time in sports -- or life -- he truly needed a second chance. Until now. Three failed seasons with the New York Jets, the team he’ll face in Sunday’s opener at Bank of America Stadium (1 p.m. ET, CBS), is the reason.

Panthers offensive coordinator Joe Brady says he doesn't have a set number of plays for Christian McCaffrey to make sure the Pro Bowl running back doesn't get worn down in a 17-game schedule. He'll take it week to week, but yes he'll lean on McCaffrey to make plays. "There's not many players in the NFL that at any given moment that they touch the football there's an opportunity he can score a touchdown. . . . That makes life easier as a play-caller.''

Panthers cornerback Donte Jackson really wasn't focused on getting a new deal before this season. But he is playing with a chip on his shoulder since he felt many gave up on him after struggling to stay on the field the past two seasons. "I'm just working on playing football. I felt like I was ready to go regardless of contract.''

Edge rusher Brian Burns said he cut out some bad habits that he would like to think led him to becoming one of the Panthers' team captains for the first time. No walking into ream meetings at the last minute for him.

The preparation is over so it's time to take a look at a few keys for the Panthers against the Jets: 1. Keep Sam Darnold clean. Darnold was under constant duress with the Jets. He even made fun about being hit so much. It won't be fun if it happens Sunday. 2. Make Zach Wilson look like a rookie. Confuse him with pressure and blitzes. DC Phil Snow has the weapons to do this. 3. Feed Christian McCaffrey. Don't give up on the running game even if there are early struggles.
