Community (season 3 on)

American TV ratings always seem really low. Are there many local networks that lots of people prefer, or do people just not really watch much tv?

Of course over here we don't have so many channels (we have the big five, formerly terrestrial channels, and then a load of digital/cable channels that are mostly crap, pornographic, or repeats), but they seem to get more or less the same number of people watching them. On Saturday nights we've had 10 million watching The Voice UK, with another 10 watching Britain's Got Talent. And there are only 61 million people in the country.

It's both: viewership in general has been in decline for over a decade, and most people have cable or satellite now, so there are dozens of channels competing for viewers.

It may also be a changing ethnic/racial make-up issue, since viewership is so down on the major networks and yet it's up on Spanish-language network Univision, so much so that some nights, Uni beats one or more of the old-fashioned networks. (Well, NBC). Whitey is running scared...

Personally I don't know why they even bother doing separate ratings charts for "broadcast" and "cable" since the two markets are so intertwined now. Broadcast still gets twice as many viewers as cable, but it used to be 5x as many.

That totally wasn't the next episode.

This week's was...okay. There were lots of funny lines as usual ("tiny riot gear, aww!" and the whole one-armed discussion at the start) but the story...I didn't really get the story. Why did they all start rioting? It wasn't really the Dean's fault that the biology teacher quit.

And I really don't like how they've just marginalised Britta and she only pops up to say something stupid and smile at Troy at the end (not that it isn't a great smile.) Okay they acknowledged it this week with Jeff saying "I'm sure you used to be smarter than me" or something but that doesn't really help unless they change it.

Not one of my favorites either! I liked it, but I didn't love it.

Dean touched Jeff on the tummy.

Yeah, I was watching out for the Dean touching lower again. I've only noticed it for sure three episodes in a row, but it's probably been happening since the beginning.

Anyway, BAD EPISODE.

I'm watching last week's again as an antidote.

The rioting, challenging the Dean on being a bad Dean and everyone getting expelled wasn't a bad idea in principle, but as Wacky says, the excuse for it all kicking off was really weak and badly communicated.

There were still lots of lines I found funny, but it was the kind of episode only a fan could love (well... tolerate). Won't be helping the ratings next week. :(

There were a couple of moments where I chuckled, but I wish they would get rid of Chang. His antics border on the ridiculous, even for this show.

I agree about Chang. He was a funny foil for the group in season 1, but since he was fired from teaching Spanish his character became kinda useless. There have been a few funny scenes involving Chang, but not enough to keep him around.

Yeah, it's better than nothing, but it's still difficult to be cheerful about it.

If only they moved it to a more reasonable time... we'll never know how well it could've done.
