My only point throughout this entire discussion is that the color of someone's skin is really only a skin deep difference. We don't have to be color-blind, because it would be a rather boring place if everyone was exactly the same way. But we also shouldn't come to the conclusion that one color is better than another. That's just my opinion though, and I can accept that some don't share it.

Not meaning to sound pedantic--just worried that when we search for the causes of racism, we fall back on ignorance, when in fact, some people's racism is firmly grounded in experience with members of a particular race. Certainly we define black against white racism in these terms; I don't think it's ridiculous to consider that some white against black racism stems from the same causes.
As for reparations and affirmative action, I see those as being two looming causes of white against black racism.

I agree with your assesment there. As for Reparation and AA, I think they already are a cause for racism, being based in racist exlcusivity themselves.

It still doesn't excuse the racism, but the inductive reasoning appears valid to the racist because you have people who have had encounter after encounter with black culture, all of them negative. And then the media solidifies that picture of what black culture is all about by showing only the negative aspects of it. And it's not white media moguls who are solely responsible for this. You have to have black entertainers willing to perpetuate the stereotypes to show them onscreen. It's not like jackasses like Snoop and 50 Cent are really white folks in black face.
Racism is an extremely complex problem, but it's a problem that is perpetuated by the black community just as much if not more than by the white community, at least in 2006 versus 1966. Blacks need to take some responsibility for showing us positive images of their culture. That's the way you're going to get a lot of people to renounce their racism. The way we're going about it now is just getting them to not express it.
And what I find frightening is the fact that were any of us to say these things in our places of employment, we'd either be fired or forced to attend session after session of sensitivity training. And that, in my opinion, is a major impediment to solving racism.

I'll make some observations here...I think debating the topic of racism is like debating religion...ultimately useless.
1. Painting members who espouse racist tendencies as "pseudo-intellectuals" is a laugh. While I admire education and critical thinking, I follow Bill Cosby's definition of intellectuals: "people who study what other people do naturally." I have more respect for those who can go against the grain and back up their argument with cold facts than those who were conditioned in college to approach life from a shaky viewpoint. I'm sick to death of idiots who've read a couple of Star Trek novels and suddenly think they have some measure of depth to their philosophy. Clue, people: the UFP ain't gonna happen. It's fiction. Enough said there.
2. I also find humorous the fact that many people across the nation claim to be turned off by racist jokes, slurs, etc...yet apply the same jokes, slurs, etc. to rednecks. In truth, I can't see where things have changed.
3. I'll stop concentrating on the color of someone's skin when it stops mattering. Menty, you're not American, so you don't understand the nuances of American race issues in the same light that most of us do here. I don't mean that as a slam, just as an obersvation. We are besieged and choked with the concept of race here, and it comes from all angles. Whites don't like blacks...blacks want "what's theirs"...etc. Affirmative action laws that do more harm than good. When I was in the army, we had to stop calling flipcharts by that name because "flip" is a slur against Flilipinos.
Racism comes from all sides. It's Martin Luther King Jr. Day here in the US...a useless day devoted to a useless man. When militant blacks here in the US acknowledge the following individuals as having substantially contributed to the civil rights movement, then perhaps I'll pay attention...
- Harry Truman: integrated the US Armed Forces. White.
- Dwight D Eisenhower: enforced Brown v. BOE. Sent troops to my state to forcably integrate Central High. White.
- JFK: furthered and strengthened the civil rights movement. White
- LBJ: followed Kennedy's lead despite being a racist himself. White
- The SCOTUS justices who confirmed Brown v BOE. All white
- The US Congress who passed numerous laws against racial discrimination. All white.
I can go on. Like I said, when these substantial contributors gain recognition for what they did for the blacks in the US, I'll pay attention. Until then, fuck it. I despise MLK because he was a filthy socialist and the worst kind of hypocrite. The men I listed above are miles above anything MLK ever did.
Someone else who is the worst kind of hypocrite is you Sardy. You espouse total free speech, yet you categorize speech into worthy and unworthy, all the while lambasting those who don't agree with you through cheap tactics rather than engage them on an intellectual level. Your own hero and "champion of free speech," Howard Stern, is a racist himself...as a reading of his book Private Parts shows. Having a black chick as a co-host means nothing and places him in the same category as you: proud wearers of the Good Guy Badge. People like you make me sick because you're shallow and without any real substance.
And that, folks, is really about all I have to say on the subject.

I guess I'm the biggest racist on this board, because I believe that races ARE different. I believe it goes deeper than skin color obviously. Different races have different cultures and I find a whole lot about other cultures in general annoying.
I should be able to complain about these traits that annoy me withoutout being labeled a racist. Because many of them have to do with common sense and courtesy. And guess what? I see a group of 6-10 young black men sauntering out in the street, walking behind my car as well as in front of it, I dont get that same warm fuzzy feeing I do when it's little white Girl Scouts peddling cookies....
