Disney appoints a group to determine a new, official Star Wars canon

Rob Bricken on io9 - Yesterday 8:45am

The Expanded Universe as we knew it will soon be no more. Disney has created a special committee whose job it will be to figure out what is and isn't part of a complete Star Wars canon — meaning all the EU material created over the years will be judged, and either become official or deemed invalid.

Furthermore, this means at some point all new Star Wars spin-offs will matter, because they will all be official. I don't know how I feel about that.

The Story Group, as its called, includes Leland Chee, who has been Lucasfilm's "Keeper of the Holocron," the in-house database of everything Star Wars. According to The Hollywood Reporter:

The story group, [Chee] explained, "has a hand in all facets of Star Wars storytelling, including movies, TV, games and publishing." When asked what the change meant, he wrote that "a primary goal" was to ensure that there was no hierarchy between the movies and spinoff material, but instead one cohesive canon across the entire franchise, adding that "more so than ever, the canon field will serve us internally simply for classification rather than setting hierarchy."

We obviously don't know what will be kept and what will be lost, but now we know that instead of separating the official Star Wars universe from the Expanded Universe, we're going to get one consistent (hopefully) universe, where every story told is official, whether it be a movie, a comic, a book, or a videogame. I would guess that Disney would cherry pick a few things from the material that's come before — probably big stuff like the Clone Wars cartoon, maybe some of the Knights of the Old Republic material — but I can't imagine them burdening themselves down with too much old material, as most of it would merely inhibit the new stories they want to tell (and products they want to sell). I also can't imagine they'd really want any of the Star Wars books set after the movies, as those will almost certainly get in their way of their sequels.

But who knows? Do you guys have any votes for what should stay and what should go? What would you most hate to lose?

I just ignore the awful books. I don't see a problem with letting people who read them pretend they're canon and letting people who think they're terrible pretend they don't exist.

Because if the books exist then Chewbacca is dead, Han and Liea have already lost two grown up kids, Luke has been married and widowed, and Coroscant has been half terraformed by a Yungzten Vong invasion fleet, all of which will require a really long opening scroll for anyone who hasn't read the books to even have a clue as to what's going on.

The fact that every time they invited him to write another story, it always seemed to retread the same ground, it was as if no other books existed, every new book had to feature characters or situations he himself had come up with.

Thrawn himself seemed to perfect a villain, and he wasn't even taken out by one of the heroes, this super genius who could tell everything about everyone with scarcely any information can't tell his own bodyguards are about to turn on him?

Animals that can make the force go away?

A clone of Luke called Luuke?

‘Star Wars’ Plot Details Revealed: Episode VII Will Take Place 30 Years After ‘Jedi’

By Tim Molloy on March 18, 2014 @ 10:30 am

Disney chief Bob Iger also announces plans for “Incredibles 2” and a third “Cars”

Disney CEO Bob Iger announced Tuesday that “Star Wars: Episode VII” starts shooting in May and that it takes place 30 years after the events of “Return of the Jedi.”

In Tuesday's shareholders meeting, Iger also revealed that the much-anticipated film will feature “some very familiar faces, as well as a trio of new young leads.” Six weeks out from shooting, so far the only confirmed cast member is R2-D2.

The official “Star Wars” website confirms the May 2014 start date, listing that director J.J. Abrams plans to start principal photography at Pinewood Studios in London. The film is “well into pre-production,” according to Iger.

“Episode VII” wasn't the only sequel Iger mentioned Tuesday. He also announced that Brad Bird is working on a story for “The Incredibles 2”, and that Disney is developing a third “Cars” film.

J.J. Abrams first announced in November that R2-D2 would be back. Kenny Baker has played the role in every “Star Wars” film so far, and R2's sounds were provided by Ben Burtt — the sound designer responsible for the lightsaber hum and Darth Vader's heavy breathing.

Iger also said Disney's “Frozen,” which has earned more than $1 billion in global box office, is “poised” to surpass Pixar's “Toy Story 3” as the top-earning animated film ever. “Toy Story 3” has grossed $1.063 billion. “Frozen” is at $1.026 billion and just opened in Japan.

The CEO did not address the exit of Anne Sweeney as co-chair of Disney Media and president of the Disney-ABC Television Group, or discuss who might replace her.

Iger also announced that the next D23 expo will be held in Anaheim on Aug. 14-16.
Anything new here?
