Doctor Who Series 7: There Will Be Daleks

Best episode of the series so far, certainly one of the best of the Matt era.

Cool combination of Hunt for red October and alien, and they actually gave David Warner something good to do, not waste him as they have some guest stars in the past.

Very enjoyable episode. I'd been a bit concerned seeing photos of the suit thinking it'd look really naff, but the combination of well lit scenes and the guy not actually being in his suit much helped a lot.

David Warner showing up singing Vienna has to be one of my fave TV entrances.

I thought they could have made it clear a little earlier on that this was a Russian sub. It was only a few minutes into the Doc being present that we knew for sure (unless you recognised the uniforms). Until then I thought it might be a British sub in the future that was in an analogous Cold War with the US, as that's a Doctor Who type thing to do.

Really liked seeing old fashioned model work for most shots of the sub. It's the best way to show a sub breaking through ice, but most shows these days would've used CGI. But where CG did work really well was for the alien's face, which looked very convincing.

Should've had the line "quiet, you insect!" "Actually he's a reptile..."

It was good, but more in a "held my interest" way than a "great tense episode" way. I mean, it was satisfactory. But it didn't transcend the genre. Like it was the same basic plot as "Dalek" from 2005 but definitely not as good as that. The ending felt a bit easy. It was okay. Probably the best MarK Gatiss episode but all his other episodes have been pretty weak so...

David Warner was good but I kind of wish he'd had something more important to do than being the comic relief. He could have delivered a good speech or done something clever.

I also kind of wish they'd used Victorian Clara as the companion as this one seems to be written to be unremarkable ("What do you like doing?" "Stuff.") Maybe that's the point though.

I liked it very much. I think Clara will become more remarkable as her time on the show goes on. Maybe that is what they're aiming for.

I think maybe because they'd already introduced her twice (then killed her) they didn't want to spend too much time introducing the third version. It's just that we're used to seeing companions talking about their lives and family and stuff at first whereas she's just almost instantly adjusted to being a companion.

It will either be that his name is "Doctor Who" or it'll be the thing Moffat posted on a newsgroup 18 years ago...

Here's a particularly stupid theory. If we take "The Doctor" to
be the Doctor's name - even if it is in the form of a title no
doubt meaning something deep and Gallifreyan - perhaps our
earthly use of the word "doctor" meaning healer or wise man is
direct result of the Doctor's multiple interventions in our
history as a healer and wise man. In other words, we got it from
him. This is a very silly idea and I'm consequently rather proud
of it.

Steven Moffat

That's something that River directly states at the end of A Good Man Goes to War.

(no we won't hear it that would be dumb)

Does anyone seriously beleive his name will be revealed to us?

No, I believe they will tease us with that possibility until the last few minutes of the episode and then a twist will occur that prevents him from the big reveal.

I heard a spoiler or theory, didn't want to ask which.

Matt Smith whispers it to River, who goes onto whisper it to Tennant in the library before she dies. I suppose as a way to show him that she really knew him?

Of course they can't let us hear it because no name could possibly be satisfying. I reckon the Doc will yell it at someone, but there'll be a massive explosion behind him or something of that sort that drowns out the sound.

I have been avoiding this thread all day because I thought you guys were talking about the new episode, then I JUST REALIZED IT'S FRIDAY.

Aside from Matt Smith's HORRIBLE mispronunciation of "Metabilis", I thought that was pretty good.

I think Neil Cross' problem is that he doesn't seem to be able to fit a story into the 45 minute format that well, both of his episodes so far would've worked better as an old-fashioned four parter. Which means that while it's full of some really good ideas it all feels a bit uneven. But still good I thought.

A bit average, neither particularly good, or particularly bad.

Well acted for the most part, and some high brow concepts, could have benefited from being a few minutes longer.

Also if the monster was just an alien trying to get home, why the evil laugh?

I guess the monster wanted to scare the Doctor so that the Doctor would try to get home and the monster could follow...

(I THOUGHT IT WAS GOOD, BETTER THAN THE RINGS OF AZKABAN.)

It's difficult doing a horror when it's sunny with blue skies outside but there were still a few creepy bits and it was a fun episode.

I thought the pacing was fine for the most part, but the twisty monster bit at the end could've done with another ten minutes or so to flesh it out and it would've been nice to hear more from the time traveller.

Not sure how the chalk wafted about and formed "HELP ME" on the wall if the woman was experiencing time at a dramatically slower rate, didn't have any chalk wafting super powers and probably didn't even know the house was there. Maybe the monster did it.

What did everyone think about the TARDIS (or security program whatever thing) talking to Clara? It seemed like really forced exposition (which was unnecessary since it only reiterated what the Doc had already stated) and it kind of diminished the specialness of 'The Doctor's Wife'. Did like the choice of avatar, though.

Next week's looks good.
