Doctor Who Series 7: There Will Be Daleks

There's some apparent casting news about the 50th Anniversary Special that will apparently be revealed in the next issue of Doctor Who Magazine. I'll stick it in spoilers as it's quite a big one but no doubt it'll be in every newspaper soon anyway:

"As filming on the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special begins, some details have emerged regarding the episode. The new issue of Doctor Who Magazine, out next week, have confirmed that David Tennant and Billie Piper, have signed up to appear in the special. Also starring is screen legend, John Hurt (Alien).

The special will be ninety minutes long and receive a limited worldwide 3D cinema release."

If they only end up using
two Doctors, none of whom are from the classic era, I am not going to be happy.

I have no desire to see those people again.

EDIT: Well maybe that was a bit harsh, I wouldn't mind Tennant (I don't think we need spoiler tags now) as the Doctor in a multi-Doctor story.

Aside from that, Doctor Who is back TO-NIGHT. Let's see what we're in store for for the next few weeks:

7) The Bells of Saint John by Steven "Still not as bad as Russell T. Davies" Moffat. Aliens and Wi-Fi and a plane and stuff.

8) The Rings of Akhaten by Neil Cross. This is his first episode of Doctor Who. He wrote Luther, though!

9) Cold War by Mark Gatiss. THE FUCKING ICE WARRIORS ARE BACK HELL YEAH.

10) Hide by Neil Cross (again). I have no idea what this one is about but if it lives up to the poster I'll be very happy.

11) Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS by Steve Thompson (The Curse of the Black Spot). I loves me some TARDIS interiors so if this is nothing but TARDIS interiors then I am so looking forward to this episode so much oh God.

12) The Crimson Horror by Mark Gatiss (again). I'm guessing there will be some sort of Horror.

13) Nightmare in Silver by Neil "Holy crap Neil Gaiman is writing another Doctor Who" Gaiman. Neil Gaiman writes Cybermen. Look at that sentence. Look at it. It's magical.

14) [To Be Announced] by Steven Moffat. Probably all about the Clara mystery with a FUCKING BIG CLIFFHANGER into the 50th Anniversary Grand Spectacular.

WHAT WE KNOW SO FAR ABOUT THE 50th ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL:
It will be broadcast later this year. Wonderfully, the anniversary day - November 23rd - lands on a Saturday so there's literally no way it's not going to be broadcast then.

It will be about 60 mins long.

It will be in 3D (and available in 2D).

It will have a limited cinema run in 3D.

D-Tens will be back, with Billie Piper. WILL IT BE THE TENTH DOCTOR? Will it be the stupid fucking Dildo Doctor from Journeys End oh God Steven Moffat OH GOD PLEASE DON'T PLEASE.

And then it'll probably be another 50 years before we get more Doctor Who. Ah well, there's always Torchwo- oh. Well, there's always The Sarah Ja- oh. Shit.

I don't know, the opening was such an obvious rehash of blink, it was almost painful to see that a writer of Moffet's supposed calibre would yet again seek his past glories for new episodes.

People sucked into computers, and faces in the back of giant spoons, silence in the library.

Another robot duplicate of the Doctor, really?

The highlight of the whole episode was him riding up the outside of the shard, and it turned out it wasn't even him.

At least RTD could write new episodes, not kitbash his old ones.

I'm pretty RTD had a formula just as much as Moffat though.

So the book the kids were reading was written by Amelia Pond, I found out from tumblr (I probably should have noticed this.)

I SUSPECTED Richard E Grant would be back after the Christmas special as it seemed to dwell on him at the end too much just to be a reference to the original series.

It did feel more like a traditional season opener than other recent episodes, but there's nothing wrong with that. It was solid.

Naboo Fighter Pilot Woman said that most of the people trapped in the wi-fi...thing would die when they woke up. But then the Doctor woke them all up anyway. We didn't see what happened. So did he kill a lot of people? Were they all just lying down next to their computers or phones or whatever?

Also it's funny how The Great Intelligence was controlling everyone that worked there but they all still updated their Facebooks (and Myspaces apparently) with "lol working in the Shard."

I'm pretty RTD had a formula just as much as Moffat though.

"Millions of [aliens] invade the Earth, [Character] gets magic powers and defeats them" is literally 4/5 of the season finales RTD wrote.

Naboo Fighter Pilot Woman said that most of the people trapped in the wi-fi...thing would die when they woke up. But then the Doctor woke them all up anyway. We didn't see what happened. So did he kill a lot of people? Were they all just lying down next to their computers or phones or whatever?

It's mentioned that the people without bodies remaining would just die, but The Doctor states that that would be better than living in the eternal hell that they were in.

So the Doctor condemns dozens of people to die to save one person who seems to come back from the dead a lot anyway.

He's not "condemning them to die" if they're just "souls" trapped in a little box saying "I don't know where I am." That's not really being alive.

He was putting them out of their misery, while freeing who knows how many others who did have bodies to go back to. It wasn't really a difficult choice.

I liked the episode. It was a good reintroduction to Clara and the story was simplistic enough that we could concentrate on her and the Doctor rather than trying to get our heads around some sort of Moffat paradox.

I'm never keen on insanely fast tapping of keyboards but it was just about at tolerable levels here.

Lots of nice shots of London that looked as though they had the backing of the tourism office. Can't believe I missed the TARDIS stopping outside my office. :(

Next week looks like a visual feast. Lots of headscarves, stillsuits, souks. Hmm.
